Chiefs put franchise tag on DE Allen

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - The Kansas City Chiefs placed the franchise tag on star defensive end Jared Allen on Monday, according to the Kansas City Star.

Being designated as the team’s franchise player means Allen is guaranteed to receive a one-year salary of $8.879 million - the average salary of the league’s five highest-paid players at his position.

Team president Carl Peterson confirmed to the newspaper that the team will franchise Allen, who made his first Pro Bowl appearance this season.

Allen is coming off a career year, registering an NFL-leading 15 1/2 sacks despite sitting out two games due to a suspension.

A fourth-round pick out of Idaho State in 2004, the 6-6, 270-pound Allen has 43 sacks in his four seasons.
