Report: Saints release WR Patten

NEW ORLEANS (TICKER) —The New Orleans Saints cut ties with veteran wide receiver David Patten on Thursday, according to a report by the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The 34-year-old veteran’s role diminished this season due to injuries and advancing age, which have robbed him of some of his speed and ability to create separation. He played in just five games last season, catching 11 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown.

Marques Colston, Lance Moore and Devery Henderson have emerged as quarterback Drew Brees’ top targets at wideout, making Patten expendable.

Patten has played for five teams over 12 NFL seasons, accumulating 324 receptions for 4,715 yards and 24 touchdowns. He signed with the Saints prior to the 2007 campaign after two years with the Washington Redskins.
