Browns acquire DT Williams

CLEVELAND (Ticker) - The Cleveland Browns made a move to bolster their defense, acquiring defensive tackle Corey Williams from the Green Bay Packers.

The Browns sent a second-round choice in this year’s draft for Williams, who signed a six-year contract with the club on Friday.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The move, which was reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealder shortly after the free agency period began at 12:01 a.m. Friday, was a bit of a surprise since Williams had been designated as the Packers’ franchise player, guaranteeing him a one-year salary of $6.3 million.

The 6-4, 320-pound Williams registered 14 sacks while playing all 32 games the past two seasons.

A sixth-round pick by the Packers in 2004, the 27-year-old Williams also had an interception and three forced fumbles to go with his seven sacks last season. He also recorded a career-high 51 tackles.
