NFL Team Reports: AFC East
Several times a week, The Trenches will present team reports from Sporting News’ 32 NFL correspondents. Check back each day for the latest news on your team.
WR Randy Moss(notes) contends that Jets CB Darrelle Revis(notes) had over-the-top safety help in the Jets’ Week 2 win. Moss would not agree that Revis handled him one-on-one, and coach Bill Belichick supported the assertion. Moss had four catches for 24 yards in the 16-9 loss.
“Everybody knew I was in man coverage,” Revis said, wondering why Moss wouldn’t give him the respect he believes he deserves.
The disagreement will be settled this week when the Jets come to New England. Many factors will decide the game, but Moss’ effort to break free from Revis will be a huge one.
Since the first meeting, the Patriots have done a better job of freeing up Moss, who leads the NFL with 891 receiving yards and has seven touchdowns. The Patriots are moving him around, often putting him in the slot to manufacture a free release. It has allowed Moss to run downfield effectively, as he displayed last week on his 63-yard TD against the Colts. He will present a serious challenge to Revis, but that’s nothing new for the Pro Bowl corner. He takes on star receivers every week.

Bills officials have contacted former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan about their soon-to-be vacant position. Get more details here.
TE Derek Fine(notes) (torn meniscus) became the 11th player placed on IR To fill Fine’s roster spot, the Bills signed TE Joe Klopfenstein(notes), a ‘06 second-round pick of the Rams.
The knee injury sustained by LT Demetrius Bell(notes) is not as serious as first thought. He is expected to be sidelined two weeks and perhaps more, though. Rookie LG Andy Levitre(notes) will move outside to fill the void.

In their 16-9 victory over New England on Sept. 20, the Jets were fortunate in that they faced a Patriots defense still feeling its way after many offseason changes.
Interestingly, Bill Belichick chose to play fairly vanilla on defense, sending very few blitzes at Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez(notes) in only his second NFL start. Plus, ILB Jerod Mayo(notes), one of New England’s best tacklers, sat out that game with a knee injury. But Mayo is healthy and the members of the defense have more experience playing with one another, so expect a few more wrinkles Sunday.
Sanchez was turnover-free in that game, and he needs to match that feat or else Belichick & Co. will turn up the heat even more. A key for Sanchez is to play well early in the game. On Wednesday, he bemoaned the fact he hasn’t been able to “get in the groove” until later in games.
