NFL Team Report: Jets’ Defense Has Yet To Recover From Jenkins’ Injury
The season-ending injury to NT Kris Jenkins(notes) continues to greatly affect the Jets, no matter how much they deny it. The holes were gaping for Jacksonville RB Maurice Jones-Drew(notes) on Sunday as he ran for 123 yards on 5.1 yards per carry.
No Jets defensive lineman can replicate Jenkins’ play, and the team might have to use more run blitzes and stack the box more often to stop the run. That likely would open up space for the opponents’ passing games, but the Jets can’t really worry much about that now. The Jaguars were 7-for-13 on third downs Sunday. …
SS Jim Leonhard(notes) suffered an injury to his right thumb Sunday. He had it heavily wrapped and did return to the game, but he wasn’t sure how serious it was. Even if he plays at New England next week, the Jets will use someone else on punt returns. CB Darrelle Revis(notes) handled those duties Sunday after Leonhard’s injury. —J.P. Pelzman
