Mock draft: Despite suspension, Bryant goes No. 1

  • Print

Here's a look at the first 16 picks in the NFL draft, as projected by Sporting News' War Room scouts. Draft order is as of the end of Week 8 (*—underclassman):

Dez Bryant's season-ending suspension shouldn't hurt his draft stock.
Dez Bryant's season-ending suspension shouldn't hurt his draft stock.

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Dez Bryant*, WR, Oklahoma State
The Bucs need playmakers on offense, so despite Bryant's suspension, they should jump at the chance to get the big, athletic receiver who can make big plays with the ball in his hands.

2. St. Louis Rams: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
The Rams' defensive line has struggled in recent seasons, and Suh would give them a powerful and athletic tackle who can change games.

3. Cleveland Browns: Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
Even with Joe Thomas(notes), Cleveland needs a lot of help on its offensive line, and Williams would give the inevitable new head coach and GM a pair of elite tackles.

4. Kansas City Chiefs: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
To give Matt Cassel(notes) a chance at long-term success, the Chiefs have to protect him. Okung is an athletic and strong tackle who would start on the right side in 2010 and could take over the left spot eventually.

5. Tennessee Titans: Gerald McCoy*, DT, Oklahoma
The Titans' defense has not been the same since losing Albert Haynesworth(notes), so they should jump at the chance to get another impact tackle in McCoy.

6. Detroit Lions: Eric Berry*, S/CB, Tennessee
Berry plays safety at Tennessee, but he is best suited to cornerback in the NFL. His athleticism, instincts and playmaking ability would really upgrade the Lions' secondary.

7. Oakland Raiders: Taylor Mays, S, USC
The Raiders' strength is their defense, but adding the versatile Mays would make the unit even better.

8. Seattle Seahawks: Bryan Bulaga*, OT, Iowa
Walter Jones'(notes) career might be over, and Bulaga is a big-time athlete who might be able to replace him.

9. Washington Redskins: Sam Bradford*, QB, Oklahoma
Whoever takes over the Redskins will be looking to rebuild, and adding Bradford—who likely would have been the No. 1 overall pick if not for his shoulder injury—would make too much sense.

10. Buffalo Bills: Joe Haden*, CB, Florida
Rookie safety Jairus Byrd(notes) has improved the Bills' secondary, but now they need to upgrade at cornerback, and Haden would bring them a rare athlete with great instincts and playmaking skills.

11. Jacksonville Jaguars: Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas
The Jags need to greatly improve their pass rush, and Kindle would bring his rare explosiveness to the defensive end position.

12. San Francisco 49ers: Thaddeus Gibson*, OLB, Ohio State
For the 49ers' defense to become elite, they need to improve their pass rush, and Gibson would bring the explosiveness and skills necessary to do so.

13. Miami Dolphins: Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
Many believe Channing Crowder(notes) is not long for Miami, and Akin Ayodele(notes) is not a long-term answer at inside linebacker, so it would make sense to add the tremendously instinctive Spikes, who fits Miami's defense perfectly.

14. San Francisco 49ers (from Carolina): Jon Asamoah, OG, Illinois
The 49ers must improve their offensive line, and Asamoah would bring the athleticism, strength and competitiveness to start as a rookie.

15. New York Jets: Cameron Heyward*, DE, Ohio State
The Jets' defensive line lacks youth and depth, and Heyward would bring the size, strength and athleticism to fit perfectly as an end in New York's 3-4 scheme.

16. Arizona Cardinals: Rob Gronkowski*, TE, Arizona
The Cardinals have a lot of talent at receiver, but adding an impact tight end could turn the offense from very good to elite. Gronkowski could be a top receiver and very good blocker.

    3 things is wrong here:
    1. Dez Bryant is not that great of a reciever to be a number one pick. At best he would go to the Browns
    2. Most of these players should not even be in the first round.
    3. Rams is going to have the number one pick and get Sam Bradford. because Bucs are way better than the Rams and should win a game.

This is crazy!! A Wide Receiver going #1? You think Tampa (as crazy as they may seem) would actually pay #1 money to a guy who has been suspended by the NCAA and cannot even finish his last season of college football? Also, there is no way Sam Bradford will be the 1st quarterback taken in the draft. He's wasn't even a NFL ready quarterback before he was injured; although at least then he might have been the 1st QB taken. I think Locker and Clausen should be rated hire than Bradford.......but that's just me.

Go Big 12!!! The Big 12 has the best players in the nation and that is proven since the "experts" have the first 5 players, and 7 of the top 16 coming from the great Big 12 in next years draft!!!

The Bills taking a CB? What are you smoking? They've got one of the best secondaries when healthy, with Terrence McGee and Leodis McKelvin at CB, with Drayton Florence in the nickel, and Jairus Byrd and Donte Whitner at Safety. With glaring needs along both lines and at QB, I respecfully request the name of your dealer so I can share your incredible high.

This is the poorest attempt to get someone to subscribe to Sporting News that I can imagine. Any mock draft makes the producer look completely amatueristic in the first place. I have to admit that I do like the Dolphins taking Spikes as he is a monster. Also, they are right on target about Crowder as he is about the silliest damn player that I can imagine in the NFL and I am completely embarrassed to have to root for him. The draft itself is a gamble and mock drafts rarely predict the correct outcome. I researched 3 publications that conducted mock drafts for every single pick and out of the 3 publications there were a TOTAL of 5 correct picks between the 3 of them for ALL seven rounds. NONE of the correct predictions came in the first round.

This entire mock is a fail. The Bills have drafted CB after CB after CB in the last 2 drafts. We won't pick another one especially with three starting calibre CB's already on the roster...

OT or QB will be the Bills first pick.

No Tim Tebow in the top 16? I do not care if alot of "experts" beleive he will be a great NFL QB or not I have to beleive for a few owners/GMs hes too good to pass up on. If Tebow is available when the Raiders are on the board I think Al Davis is snagging him up.

Wow, SERIOUSLY?!?! This "mock draft" is a piece of junk.

    Here's a few things that a wrong:
    1. Top picks change teams. The bucs won't take a wide reciever.
    2. The rams have decided to get rid of bulger. they will take a qb.
    3. Browns have no qb. what good is a line if the qb behind it will screw up either way.

So many mistakes from an elite sports magazine. this whole mock draft is a FAIL

This piece of trash came from The Sporting News? What week of the season was it based on? I am in agreement with many of the comments that it is terrible. How is it that San Francisco, which has its own plus Carolina's pick is selecting before Carolina's position. Seems like a lot of guessing was involved in this draft.

Hahaha this is the absolute worst mock draft ever! I agree with the post about McClain from Bama...anyone who has time should read the article on ESPN about him...he's gonna be an absolute stud and should be somewhere on this list. Again, horrible mock draft!

The Panthers don't have a better record. If you read the article, it is based on today's standings, and both the Panther and Niners have identical 3-4 records, which means, the tiebreaker is typically based on divisional records, which is why the niners have a higher pick in this mock draft. ALSO, remember this is a mock draft and everything changes at the combine (i.e. Chris Johnson, who nobody knew until his 40 time).

What idiot wrote this piece thinking the Panthers will have a better record than the Niners? They have no chance to get more wins than them and so their pick will be in the top ten next year. Do some research on this stuff first would you guys.

Al Davis puts together better mock drafts than this. This is just awful. I love how these 16 picks are a preview to get you to sign up for a subscription service. This is what the sporting news is the kind of intelligence Sporting News is showcasing to encourage subscriptions? Incredible.

Tebow will never play a down as a NFL QB.Stop acting so suprised he isn't one of the first 16 picks. If he doesn't show a willingness to change positions he may not get drafted at all.His mechanics are so bad it would take too long to fix them.Add that to his lack of arm strength and he isn't a NFL QB
