Colts' Caldwell Starts Season In Record Books

Jim Caldwell is making a name for himself in his first season as the Indianapolis Colts' coach.

The Colts beat the 49ers 18-14 on Sunday, pushing the team's record to 7-0 overall. With the win, Caldwell becomes just the third rookie coach in NFL history to start a season 7-0, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Potsy Clark of the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans opened 8-0 in 1931, and Barney Lepper's Buffalo All-Americans got off to a 7-0 start in 1920.

Colts team president Bill Polian commented on Caldwell's accomplishment: "He's done a great job. Leave it at that. There's a long way to go."

Coaches are fired for doing poorly, which creates job openings; or they retire and go out on top, which also creates job openings. Caldwell was groomed under Dungy, so it's not like he just lucked into this spot. Sure he inherited a team with plenty of talent, but if you look back to the beginning of the season there were a lot of analysts who were predicting the Titans to take the division and Houston to get the wildcard -- leaving the Colts out of the playoffs.

Caldwell proved that he could take over and have the team not only stay on track, but also improve. The Colts played poorly against the Niners and still were able to pull out a win. 7-0 isn't a Superbowl, but it does mean something: the Colts are well on their way.

I dont think record is that impressive. He inherited a team that was already one of the best in the league.

Most new coaches take over for coaches that were fired because the team is losing or is going down hill.

If he had inherited a team like Kansas City, Detroit, St Louis, Oakland for example and had them undefeated it would be more impressive.

Even if he took over for a team that had a lot of personnel changes it would be more impressive.

This is just one of those worthless, pointless records that come up that dont mean anything yet. Lets see what he does (if hes around) when they lose their stud players to retirement or free agency.
