Bengals Face Potential Blackout vs. Texans

  • Print

The Cincinnati Bengals have emailed an announcement that a local blackout is likely for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans unless ticket sales significantly increase, ProFootballTalk.com’s Mike Florio reports.

The Bengals are 4-1 overall and are leading the AFC North, so one would think selling out Paul Brown Stadium wouldn’t be that difficult a task.

Even Bengals receiver Andre Caldwell(notes) is surprised to hear the news. Caldwell tweeted early Tuesday morning [sic]: “WOW we are facing a potential blackout against Houston. Where is the support cmon fans yall gotta do better then that great game this week.”

Cincinnati has sold out 46 straight regular-season and postseason games, according to the report.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Bengals are behind the pace of the opener against Denver, which with two days remaining had 5,000 seats available. It appears as if the number is closer to 7,000.

The last Bengals regular-season game to be blacked out was Nov. 9, 2003, according to the newspaper. The opponent on that date? Houston.

    Maybe the whining football players making MILLIONS need to be reminded that there's a HUGE financial problem with the 'little people'. Only the rich and the stupid are going to pay what they're asking to see a football game in person! I'd love to see a game in person, but there's no way I can afford that. Hell, I can barely afford my cable! So... keep on punishing everyone and make it so you can't even enjoy a game on TV!! I may live in the area, but I'm NEVER going to be a Bengal's fan. They are a bunch of criminals! I find it hard to believe there's enough of them NOT in prison to even play a game... oh ,wait... they can BUY their way out of any trouble!

    It's bad enough that the cable companies charge what they do... when all football goes to the NFL channel I won't even be able to watch a game at all. There's just too much greed.... Maybe if they stopped paying the players the outrageous amounts of money they do, they could lower the ticket prices where you don't have to be rich to attend a game once in a while....

    There's always radio and watching your team's helmet and a little football photo move across the screen on a sports website. How 'bout a trip to Houston or another city for the day and watch it there...less than the cost of going to the actual game!

    Yeah, I'm getting SICK AND TIRED of hearing about the blackout rule. Its bad enough that they moved Monday night football already, and the NFL Network for 300 dollars a year is going to be the only reality in the future ( you know its true).

    Football is America's sport....

    Wait... was America's sport... now its just America's money whore. There is no spirit of competition and love of the game anymore. Its all about the money. Money money money money money.

    But what else should we expect? Thats all this WORLD is about anymore.

    Blame the NFL for this. Television does not = lack of fans at the stadium. Fans are going to fill the seats as long as money is availible,or their team is winning. The blackout rule should be repealed, not enforced.

    NFL=greedy owners and commissioner.

    ...and the fans are seemingly EXPECTED to open their bank accounts the second our beloved team delivers. I would love to fork over the ched to get a couple seats in PBS, but it won't come at the expense of furthering my personal recession.

    Unlike many who are quick to acquire debt by spending $200+ on a 4-hour-event, I'm trying to save my money....what a novel concept, I know!!! But, WTF good does this do anyone? If the players and the CBA wouldn't demand ass-loads of money to play a game, maybe ticket prices wouldn't be as ridiculous; allowing more people in a small city to be ABLE to afford to root their team on in person. Anyone think about that? The fan is always under appreciated!
