Chargers Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

Say, didn’t you used to be the high-flying Denver Broncos?

That’s the Chargers’ question as they head to Denver to face their longtime AFC West foe Sunday.

It wasn’t that long ago—Oct. 19—that the Broncos left San Diego after taking the Chargers to the woodshed and building a 3 1/2-game lead.

The Broncos haven’t won a game since and the Chargers are riding a four-game winning streak to knot these two talented teams at 6-3 and atop the AFC West.

“I don’t think ‘tank’ is the word,” Philip Rivers(notes) said, when asked if this Broncos team is tanking like last year’s, which squandered away the division lead to San Diego in the last four weeks.

“Teams go through ups and downs; we went through a downer earlier in the year and now we’re winning. And it seems Denver flipped the role.

“But at this point in the season we’re getting into the thick of it and the team playing the best in November and December gets to play in January. That is what we both know and that is why both teams need this win.”

Few people outside the Chargers’ locker room thought the Chargers could make up that much ground this fast. But under Norv Turner this has become a tradition, with the Chargers starting slowly then finding a way to play their best football as the calendar keeps flipping.

What changed the Chargers was their focus. Once they were looking at such a large deficit and up at the Broncos, they decided to start checking mirrors instead of other teams.

“After that (loss to Denver) our thoughts were we had to take care of own situation,” Turner said. “In that game we did a lot of things better than in previous games and we were close to getting on a roll. But we had to just go out and play and not get caught up in the negative things of not winning the game and we did that.”

That said, the Chargers are facing a miffed Broncos bunch that has the sour taste of a three-game losing streak in their mouths. And with the latest loss coming to the woeful Redskins, the Chargers know they aren’t going to sneak up on the Broncos.

“They are a very good football team; we saw that in the first meeting,” Turner said. “They play awfully well at home and we will have to play our best.”

If the Chargers can get past this one in a winning fashion, it’ll be the best team they’ll see in some time. After wrestling with the Giants and Eagles leading up to Sunday, they get a somewhat soft stretch with the visiting Chiefs and a game at Cleveland up next.

A four-game winning streak could easily transform into a seven-game run beginning with a win Sunday, which is no slam dunk.

But there is no argument the Chargers feel much better seeing the Broncos this time around with a swagger that was absent during a 2-3 start.

“I think with us it’s just the confidence level and how we are playing right now as a whole,” Shawne Merriman(notes) said. “It’s not just on offense, but our defense and our special teams. I think everything as a whole has made a complete turnaround from four weeks ago.”

Series History:   100th regular-season meeting. Broncos lead series 54-44-1. The Broncos used to dominate the Chargers at home, winning 10 of 11 games in Denver during one stretch. But since Philip Rivers became the Chargers’ starting quarterback in 2006, the visiting Chargers have won two of three games. And the lone loss came last season in the controversial Ed Hochuli game in which the referee called an incomplete pass instead of a fumble with the Broncos driving for the game-winning score.

NOTES, QUOTES

—If it seems the AFC West winner is usually the Broncos or Chargers, that has been the case of late. The two teams have won four of the last five division crowns.

QB Philip Rivers said he always get a kick out of going to the Mile High City.

“I do enjoy going there and playing,” he said. “It’s a great atmosphere; it’s a great place to play. Obviously the games are always very meaningful. Denver and us have been battling for the division just about year. It’s always fun to go back there and play and we want to play at a high level.”

• OLB Shawne Merriman said while the Chargers are riding high that the films show a Broncos team looking for its legs again.

“I think they are a different team than what they were let’s say four weeks ago,” he said. “Four weeks ago they were undefeated and they just looked like one of the unbeatable teams in the league. But every team can get beat and they were just playing extremely well at that time.”

• Chargers coach Norv Turner is familiar with the defensive coordinator he will match wits with Sunday. Mike Nolan of Denver was the head coach of the Niners when Turner was the offensive coordinator in 2006.

• Denver defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely spent 12 seasons in that role with the Chargers before this season.

• Turner takes a lot of heat but know this: If the Chargers beat the Broncos, he will be 26-16 in the regular season and own the highest winning percentage of any San Diego coach at .619.

• RB LaDainian Tomlinson(notes), along with former QB Dan Fouts, got the most votes for the franchise’s 50th anniversary team.

“It’s a great honor, especially when you think about all of the players that have come through here throughout the 50-year history,” Tomlinson said. “To be considered to be one of the greatest in the organizations history is a great honor and something you take pride in.”

More than 400,000 votes were cast in the on-line balloting.

• It’s not a big surprise that when the Chargers collect sacks and take care of the ball, they usually win. In four games this season in which they have more sacks and more forced turnovers combined, the Chargers are 4-0 and have outscored their opponents by 54 points.

• When Tomlinson is running like he did Sunday—two touchdowns and 96 yards—it leaks to other areas of the offense.

“When he’s playing that way, that’s when we’re at our best,” TE Antonio Gates(notes) said. “It’s clear to us, it’s clear to everyone. When we’re able to establish the running game, that’s when we’re at our best.”

• Rivers is coming off a game in which he had a career-best 80 percent completion percentage and a season-high 131.8 rating.

• Tila Tequila has filed a civil lawsuit against Merriman regarding their incident in his home. Merriman was cleared of, among other charges, assault and false imprisonment. “I really have nothing to say,” he said. “It’s a sad and unfortunate situation that by being a pro figure sometimes you have to deal with things and I am going to let it take its course.”

By The Numbers:   1,000—Sunday’s game will mark the Chargers’ 1,000th since their inception. They are 498-486-15.

Quote To Note:   “Their last win was against us and our last loss was against them.”—QB Philip Rivers on the opposite directions the Chargers and Broncos have gone since Denver defeated the Chargers on Oct. 19.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

The Chargers’ patience for Jyles Tucker’s(notes) ankle injury was running out, and a look at the calendar forced them to place the outside linebacker on injured reserve, losing him for the season.

To take his roster space, the Chargers went to the other side of the ball in promoting Corey Clark(notes) from the practice squad. Clark is a good insurance policy as right tackle Jeromey Clary(notes) is nursing a sore ankle that forced him from Sunday’s game.

All indications are Clary could play Sunday, but he also could have a setback when he returns to practice this week.

Clark is a former seventh-round pick in his second season with the Chargers.

Player Notes

• LB James Holt(notes) has only been with the team since Nov. 3 but he is making an impact on special teams. So much, that he was awarded a game ball for his work on Sunday.

• WR Buster Davis is no closer to seeing the field than he has been all year. The former first-round pick has been inactive for every game.

• RB LaDainian Tomlinson trails Marcus Allen by 98 yards for 10th place on the NFL’s all-time rushing list.

• RB Darren Sproles(notes) can hurt teams many different ways as a returner, running back and receiver. His 1,602 combined yards leads the league.

• ILB Kevin Burnett(notes) continues to move better after missing three games with an ankle injury. He returned last week and led the team with 10 tackles.

Game Plan:   This game is going to be about passing attack—the Chargers going all-out after the Broncos’ quarterback and Philip Rivers attacking a secondary with smaller receivers being matched against his lanky wide outs.

Matchups To Watch:   Chargers outside pass rush vs. Broncos QB Kyle Orton(notes) or Chris Simms(notes). The Chargers were content last week to let Philly’s Donovan McNabb(notes) sit back and pick apart the secondary to the tune of 450 passing yards. The Chargers thought by the time the outside guys got there, the mobile McNabb would step away from harm’s way. That isn’t the case this week as that outside pass rush could feast on a gimpy Orton (ankle) or Simms and his happy feet. Both Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips(notes) didn’t practice Wednesday with leg issues. But both will be going Sunday and it figures they will tee off on the Denver quarterback of the day. Both were held without sacks last week after dominating the previous two weeks. Look for them to cut it loose, which might force Orton/Simms into hot routes and not the down field stuff where Brandon Marshall(notes) can shine.

Chargers WRs Vincent Jackson(notes) and Malcom Floyd(notes) vs. Broncos secondary. Jackson and Floyd are making their marks with their downfield, acrobatic catches over smaller defensive backs. This week they could exploit a Denver secondary which features cornerbacks Andre Goodman (5-foot-10) and Champ Bailey(notes) (6-0) and safeties Brian Dawkins(notes) (6-0) and Renaldo Hill(notes) (5-10). Throw in TE Antonio Gates (6-4) and the Chargers’ receivers could basically be posing up on the smaller defensive backs, giving Rivers an inviting target. The Broncos do rank No. 5 against the pass, but could have their hands full tracking these giants.

Chargers C Scott Mruczkowski(notes) and RT Jeromey Clary vs. Broncos OLB Elvis Dumervil(notes). Mruczkowski, a backup, has at least one more start in him as Pro Bowler Nick Hardwick(notes) continues to mend. Clary is probably going to be ready after twisting his ankle Sunday, but he won’t be at 100 percent. The Chargers have to figure out a way to slow Dumervil, who leads the league with 11.5 sacks. In the previous matchup in San Diego, Dumervil collected two sacks and has three against the Chargers in his career.

Injury Impact:

• RT Jeromey Clary (ankle) missed another practice Thursday and is looking questionable for Sunday.

• C Nick Hardwick (ankle) didn’t practice Thursday and won’t play on Sunday.

• DL Travis Johnson(notes) (groin) didn’t practice but he will likely play Sunday.

• DT Ogemdi Nwagbuo(notes) (groin) didn’t practice Thursday but should be ready to go Sunday.

• TE Antonio Gates (foot) participated in Thursday’s practice.

• ILB Tim Dobbins(notes) (ankle) practiced Thursday and is available for Sunday.

• P Mike Scifres(notes) (groin) made all of the kicks he typically would in a practice on Thursday.

Ok. Another Chargers win. A win is a win, and the Chargers are in first place again (where they should have been from the beggining). All that is good. A reality check.... they aren't that much improved. The Broncos are far from an elite team and they were out there with a qb on one leg. Tackling remains suspect. Run defense??? It is still bad. I'm sure a team will realize that SD can't stop the run and keep running it down their throats. Is Merriman back? No, he is not. He is playing like a pretty average linebacker despite getting a few sacks (Phillips is playing better).

The Chargers need to get rid of Norv. I'm sick and tired about how predictable his play calling is. Has anyone seen the draw with Sproles near the end zone enough times? Anyone else sick of Norv's idea of the two minute drill at the end of the first half? Why doesn't he just tells Rivers to take a knee? At least that way he doesn't risk injury to anyone. On second an one... can anybody break it to Norv that it is ok to go deep instead of running it (if anything because you can still have another down to get that yard). :-)

I'm happy to see the Chargers beat the Broncos, however this team is still not playing up to their potential.

Here is a typical Chargers fan when they lose a game: "Fire Norv", "Bring back Marty-ball", "LT is too old now", "Sproles is too small", "Merriman is nothing without steroids", "Defence sucks fire Ron Rivera", "AJ Smith is dumb", "Should have kept Brees as Rivers sucks".

Same fair weather, band-wagon fans when the Chargers win: "Me loves my Chargers", "I knew they could do it", "Rivers is God", "LT rules", "Vincent Jackson is the @#$%", "Merriman is back", "Norv is a genius", "Ron Rivera was a good pick-up", "AJ Smith is a great GM".

    You people are such hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you Charger fans want to fire Ron Rivera? Please do, and then put him on the fastest plane you can find to Chicago. We want him back, ASAP. Lovey Smith doesn't want him back, but we don't want Lovey. Could we interest you in another Turner maybe? We'll send you Ron Turner for free.

I cant believe that people really think that LT is done what LT needs is a true Fullback. Ever since Lorenzo Neal left the team it's been hard for LT and Sproles to get going. Hester is not a true Fullback he's more like a RB, nothing near a FB. They need to let Tolbert get that starting spot. At 243 pounds that's a true FB. Not Hester that weighs 225 that's almost the same weight as Carolina's Steve Smith.

Nightmares of last season's choke job are haunting the Denver Donkey Fans right about now....

I have the local sports bar watering hole here in SoCal and their is always a strong showing of California Donkeys in there... UHHHHHH except last night, the two I did eventually see walked out quietly just as the Donkeys will finish the season.....Quietly ! Chargers will have our Probowl Center Hardwick and LB Burnett & Dobbins back when the Bolts go to Denver.

I'd say there's enough game film on the Donkeys to come up w/ a viable gameplan against them.

Stop the run and force Ortin to throw the ball 10+ yards seems to be working just fine............

What`s up with the repeated calls for firing Norv, and the repeated priase and glorification of Marty???????.....ALL we ever heard for a lonnnnggg time, was the repeated complaints of,"MARTY BALL,MARTY BALL,MARTY BALL...ETC."......O.K.....so Marty finally gets fired after 100,000 Marty-Ball complaints...So now...THE SAME fans who,no doubt, sang the "Marty-Ball" song enough to make it go platinum....are ALL singing that new idiotic song, "We love Marty".....You people are worthless, as well as hypocritical....I don`t like Norv either...but I know that keeping Marty wasn`t the answer....Coaches-aside...isn`t the real issue here, all about the Charger players, and how much they drop easy to catch balls, and how they couldn`t tackle their DEAD-GRANDMOTHERS,much less enemy RB`s?....Coaches can`t get on the field and play the game too....The Charger Players need to start earning their money, instead of ripping us off at the ticket office with their mentally-retarded version of football....I`ve been watching NFL football for 40+ years, and these Charger players have been screwing-off alot in the last two years, instead of playing at the level they are more than capable of!!...Especially on a consistent level !!....It`s too bad we don`t have Mike Ditka as a coach, because somebody needs to put a foot in every Charger players a**!!!!!

Yeah the Chargers won the game... barely. This team is not even a shadow of what it was under Marty. Turner is a terrible coach. No character. Can't put together 4 qtrs of solid play. They still have plenty of talent and will squeeze out a win when they are against the wall. At least with Marty I enjoyed the intensity they brought to every game, they were tough and physical. Now it is just painful to see this bunch of underachivers. The play calling is atrocious. Norv Turner got the keys to a Ferrari, he barely beats a Corolla on a race and he gets and A for coaching. Pleeeeeeease! With Norv this team will not win a Superbowl. I've been a Charger fan for life, since Norv took over I find myself wondering if I was happier with seeing the Chargers dominating most weeks during the regular season, than barely making it to the playoffs and winning a game or two there.

BTW can anybody tell Cromartie to stop listening to Deion and start tackling like a 6"2 corner instead of "making business decisions". every single time he has a player with a different jersey coming his way.

Have you ever read one of the Charger Blogs?
These fans just don't understand the complexities of the NFL.
We have an offensive genius for a head coach and they still complain..Our defensive coordinator
has super bowel rings and I studied under John Butler. I just don't see a problem.

Signed A.J. , Norv, and Ron

I really am sick of what isn't happing with this team. How can we go from 14 - 2 just 3 yrs ago too where we are today. Never should have fired Marty, since you did this what the owner wanted by hiring a coach that never could win in the NFL. This team of 3 yrs ago should be world champs by now instead we are loosing and probably wont make the play offs. Coach needs too be fired period. Very sad too see how it has turn out in a very short time. IF i was Rivers I be asking to be traded. Sorry for LT I feel for the guy this year. No running back can run with the line chargers have this year. To put is simple chargers have lost it with Turner.

This is really beginning to remind me of the early eighties. The Chargers came within a -59 degree game of making the Super Bowl after the '81 season and after that, things slowly unraveled. This current incarnation of the team came within a bonehead play by Drayton Florence of moving forward in the playoffs in 2006. We had the Colts' number that year, and they won the Super Bowl. We had a good year in 2007 (mirroring the 1982 team) before really falling off last year (again, mirroring the '83 team). Unfortunately, it looks like we missed the window of opportunity...... again.

Looks to me like its time to scrap the current plan and totally rebuild. Let's face it. No matter what the media keeps telling us and what our local radio guys keep preaching (that we are great), we are 10-11 over the last 21 games. The Broncos rebuilt and look at them. Of course they have a dedicated ownership that will do whatever it takes to win. The Chargers have, well, you know. The Broncos went and hired a guy from a winning environment. We hired Norv who failed at OAK and WASH. Maybe the 2011 Los Angeles Chargers will hire John Gruden as Coach and get us (I mean them) to the promised land...

I am sick of the lip service by Merriman and company, the entire defensive unit (minus Jammer) is pathetic. After listening to Marshall Faulks expalnation as to why Mohawk man and Cromartie arent playing well because they havent signed a new contract hence they arent play hard I almost threw up. Merriman has been getting paid for 1 lousy game in 08, yeah hes hurt but that was his decsion to delay surgery until the season started. He's not worth a new contract unless it includes roids.
AGAIN, the coaching staff sucks, NORV IS HORRIBLE, admit it and fire him, I dont really care who replaces him, cant get any worse can it. Rivera is lost also with the 3-4 defense so can him too.
I dont blame LT one bit for being upset at putting in Sproles (I like him BTW) for the 3rd & 2 play, thats his play and he was getting it going so if he's on the team use him.
All and all this is about as disgusted as I've been in 32 years of being a fan of this team!!!!! But yet I watch and cheer, go figure huh?

14-2 was great but I don't have a problem with the Marty firing. When Marty went to the playoffs, we were one and done. Marty is a great guy and has an outstanding regular season record but in the playoffs he is 5-13..... not good enough! Norv has a poor regular season record but has had some success in playoff games..... where he is 4-3. Gruden is 5-4 in playoff games. Cowher, 12-9. Dungy, 9-10. Holmgren, 13-11 and Johnson, 9-4. These are the type of guys that we need to lead our team. All have had some kind of success in the playoffs and have done well enough in the regular season to consistently make the playoffs.

The Spanos family knows nothing about football. They're in real estate. They've had a bad reputation since the day they axed Dan Fouts. They eventually made a good move by hiring Bobby Ross. And more recently, they hired GMs Butler and Smith. They've also finally spent the money to win. Unfortunately, at the same time, they made this insane decision to fire a 14-2 coach and hire a 58-82-1 loser in Norv Turner. There's a great billboard to put along the freeways in San Diego: FIRED MARTY (14-2) HIRED NORV (58-82-1). It will remind Spanos and A.J. Smith as to how brainless they are. This hire will go down as the most outrageous move in the history of the Chargers organization. This is a bigger detriment to the Chargers team than selecting Ryan Leaf. Now that A.J. Smith has spiraled downhill, 2-3 is his creation. This record lies in the lap of Mr. A.J. Smith. Not only did he hire Norv Turner, he released our Pro Bowl fullback after being injured for the first time as a Charger. And who is now the lead blocker for L.T.- two undersized fullbacks. Not only did A.J. Smith do nothing in the offseason to improve this horrible offensive line and defensive line, he didn't sign a legitimate fullback. For a team to not address its needs in the offseason free agency market, then what is the purpose of having a GM? I don't care how great a team is, to improve or stay on top, you can't get complacent. It's time to blow out A.J. Smith and Norv Turner. These firings won't help solve any problems unless the next head coach is given more power. If you're going to bring in a first rate coach, he's going to demand power and money. Hopefully the Spanos family will get it right this time. We can't allow a GM to hire his buddy. For two guys (Marty and A.J.) to dislike each other, 14-2 wasn't bad, was it?

Spanos needs to fire AJ Smith, Rivera, and Hal Hunter. Then he has to open up his pocket book during the next off-season.
Team needs: RB, OG, OT, Nose Tackle, ILB, and Safety.
All that can't possibly be addressed in one draft.

The play calling for this game and all of those prior has been pitifully lame. Both offensive and defensive play calls have been off the mark - more like what you would expect during initial training camp - not for regular season play.

Bursts of excellent play and then repeated errors of judgment, not just good opposition coverage but outright errors of judgment by the coaching staff - as a whole.

Basin football is not being played in San Diego - a team with the talent to be in the top 10% of the league. But instead another year of this.

We've also got a Coach named Turner in Chicago. You can have him, for free, then you'ld have a pair. He's just what Philip Rivers needs. An offensive coordinator who is truly offensive. I bet you get this guy next year. right after he's fired in Chicago.
