Browns Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

The Browns have not beaten the Steelers since the first game of the series in 2003. The streak of 12 straight losses has a lot more to do with being dominated by Ben Roethlisberger(notes) than any mystical jinx.

Roethlisberger, from Findlay, Ohio, and the University of Miami (Ohio), is 10-0 against the Browns since the Steelers took him with the 11th pick in 2004. That was the year the Browns passed on Roethlisberger despite needing a quarterback to draft tight end Kellen Winslow(notes) Jr.

The Browns get the chance to stop the streak and cripple the Steelers’ playoff hopes Thursday night in Cleveland Browns Stadium.

“A lot about him makes him unique,” Browns coach Eric Mangini said. “He has great arm strength. He has the ability to avoid to his right and left and throw accurate passes on the move. He can scramble and hurt you that way.

“We had him last game when they were going to throw a screen. We had the screen covered. He was able to scramble to his right and pick up 13 yards. Not every quarterback can do that. He has a real good sense of where the rushers are and where he can escape to.”

No one knows how well Roethlisberger escapes a pass rush better than the cornerbacks who have to cover the Steelers’ receivers for what seems like an eternity. On Thursday, Eric Wright(notes) will have the unenviable task of covering Santonio Holmes(notes), who leads the Steelers with 987 yards receiving.

When the Browns played the Steelers in Pittsburgh on Oct. 18 they sacked Roethlisberger three times and he still completed 23 of 35 passes for 417 yards and two touchdowns. He completed nine passes of 20 yards or more and threw two touchdown passes—one 8 yards to Heath Miller(notes) and one 52 yards to Hines Ward(notes).

Ward has a hamstring injury and might not play against the Browns. He caught eight passes for 159 yards in the game played two months ago. Holmes caught five passes for 104 yards. One covered 41 yards.

Roethlisberger missed a critical game against the Ravens on Nov. 29 because of a concussion. He has been sacked 30 times. Dennis Dixon(notes), the quarterback who subbed for Roethlisberger, was not sacked in the Baltimore game. But despite the beating he takes year after year, game after game, Roethlisberger has completed 69.3 percent of his passes (255 of 368) this season for 3,145 yards because he is so good at buying time for his receivers to get open. The Steelers average 8.35 yards a pass play, fifth best in the NFL.

“It’s difficult because the play is extended,” Wright said. “The immediate route you could very well have it covered and covered well. A lot of times when you have great coverage on the initial route and it extends you’re in a more vulnerable position.

“It’s something you have to be mindful of and be ready to go. When a quarterback scrambles, anything goes. Guys just want to get open. You have to fight and claw and stay as tight as possible and not allow him to uncover.”

Series History:   114th meeting. The Steelers lead the series, 58-55. During the 12 game losing streak the Browns have scored a touchdown or less six times. They have not beaten the Steelers in Cleveland Browns Stadium since winning 23-20 on Sept. 17, 2000.

NOTES, QUOTES

—qb T  im Couch was playing when the Browns beat the Steelers 33-13 on Oct. 5, 2003. Since then Kelly Holcomb(notes), Jeff Garcia(notes), Trent Dilfer(notes), Charlie Frye(notes), Derek Anderson(notes) and Bruce Gradkowski(notes) have started for Cleveland against the Steelers and lost.

Gradkowski did beat the Steelers as the Raiders quarterback last week. He started for the Browns in the final game of 2008. He was their fourth quarterback last season and played because of injuries suffered by Anderson, Brady Quinn(notes) and Ken Dorsey(notes). Gradkowski was 5 of 16 for 18 yards and two interceptions. His passer rating was 1.0.

—qb B  ernie Kosar played in an era when the Browns dominated the Steelers. He passed for 414 yards in a game against the Steelers on Nov. 23, 1986, in a game the Browns won 37-31. The victory was the second in line during a seven-game Browns winning streak.

• The Steelers’ dominance of the Browns goes beyond the 12-game winning streak. Pittsburgh has beaten the Browns 18 times in 19 games. That includes a playoff game the Browns lost 36-33 on Jan. 5, 2003 in Heinz Field.

• The Browns’ team photo was on the chair of each player in the locker room Monday. It was out of date. The picture was taken on the first weekend of the season. Sixteen players are new to the roster since then.

• The Browns have hired highly regarded attorney Fred Nance of Cleveland to be their general counsel. Nance played an instrumental role in returning the Browns to Cleveland as an expansion franchise after Art Modell moved the team to Baltimore in 1996. He was a candidate to become NFL commissioner before Roger Goodell was named to replace Paul Tagliabue.

• DE C.J. Mosley(notes) was placed on injured reserve Monday. His right ankle was broken in the first quarter of the game against the Chargers. Mosley played in all 12 games this season, but he was making his first start against San Diego because of the knee injury suffered by Kenyon Coleman(notes) a week earlier. He finished the season with 18 tackles.

• DE Derreck Robinson(notes), a 6-4, 295-pounder who broke into the NFL as an undrafted rookie with the Chargers in 2005, was signed to replace injured C.J. Mosley. He played in 16 games with the Chargers in 2005-06 and seven with the Dolphins in 2007. He was out of football in 2008 and was in the Cowboys’ training camp in 2009.

By The Numbers:   19—The Browns have lost 19 of their last 21 games.

Quote To Note:   “It’s not easy to build something that lasts and that can compete year in and year out. It’s important to do it the right way.”—Browns coach Eric Mangini on rebuilding the Browns.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Derek Anderson, not Brady Quinn, was the starting quarterback when the Browns were beaten 27-14 in Pittsburgh on Oct. 18. Anderson was 9 of 24 passing for 122 yards, with one touchdown pass and one interception. Anderson was benched a month ago.

This will be Quinn’s 11th NFL start in three seasons and his first against the Steelers.

Quinn has not thrown an interception since the third quarter of the game against the Ravens on Nov. 16. He has thrown 126 straight passes without being picked, and in that streak has thrown seven touchdown passes—four in Detroit and three Sunday in the 30-23 loss to San Diego.

In the three games he started this season before being benched, he threw one touchdown pass and three interceptions.

“I think I’ve grown the whole season,” Quinn said. “The whole team has. Since that point in Detroit, last week, this week, again we’re progressing and maturing and making some strides.”

Quinn has been inconsistent despite being protected. He completed 6 of 14 after throwing an interception in the Baltimore game Nov. 16 and was 15 of 34 for a mere 100 yards in the 16-7 loss in Cincinnati on Nov. 29. He was 21 of 33 for 304 yards against the Lions on Nov. 22, and 25 of 45 for 271 yards against the Chargers. The Browns lost all four games.

Whether Quinn has done enough in the current streak to show he should be the quarterback in 2010 and beyond is an open-ended question. Despite the long streak without an interception, Quinn has been up and down in his overall performance.

“Really, what I’m looking for right now is the next game,” coach Eric Mangini said. “That to me is the most important thing because it can be up one week and down the next week. You need to see the consistency, not just from the quarterback position but from all of these positions.”

• CB Eric Wright missed practice with a recurring hamstring injury.

• DE Kenyon Coleman missed practice with a knee injury.

• FB Lawrence Vickers(notes) missed practice with a hamstring injury.

• RB Jerome Harrison(notes) was limited in practice because of an illness.

• WR Brian Robiskie(notes) was limited with a toe injury.

Game Plan:   Teams have taken advantage of the Steelers being without Troy Polamalu(notes) by running a spread offense. The Browns could do the same Thursday night.

The emergence of rookie Brian Robiskie (four catches vs. the Chargers) and tight end Evan Moore(notes) (six catches for 80 yards vs. the Chargers) gives Quinn more weapons than Derek Anderson had when the Browns played the Steelers in October. Quinn completed passes to nine players in the San Diego game.

Matchups To Watch:  Browns C Alex Mack(notes) vs. Steelers NT Casey Hampton(notes). Mack has improved over the last six games. He said the game has slowed down for him. Hampton can be overpowering, but Mack is a strong center who can get a push on running plays and keep Hampton from collapsing the pocket.

Browns LB David Bowens(notes) vs. Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall(notes). Mendenhall is difficult to take down once he gets going, and it does not take long for him to get up to full speed. Mendenhall rushed for 62 yards on 17 carries the last time the Browns and Steelers played.

Injury Impact:   Cornerback Eric Wright did not practice Tuesday because of a hamstring injury. He did not practice the Friday before the Browns played the Chargers, but he started that game. The news is not as encouraging on end Kenyon Coleman. Coleman has not practiced or played since spraining his knee in Cincinnati on Nov. 29.

If I had a dollar for every time an announcer said "ex-Jet" during last weeks game, I might have enough to get two tickets for a Cavs game. Really now, are the Jets THAT deep in talent that Mangini had to sway his bosses that these guys are any good? Reminds me of the Butch Davis/Miami U connection back in those bad old days.....Tell you what Browns management.....Clean house! Pay the money to lure Cowher out of retirement.....Pick men with experience and a track record. And for cryining out loud can anybody hog tie and gag the offensive coordinator for the remaining games????

Here's a question to mull over for football fans......Why don't quarterbacks call the plays like back decades ago? I know they audible, but that's different.

I wonder when enough is going to be enough for Mr. Learner? Have you not seen enough of what a poor coach may do? Have you not seen enough of what upset fans say and do? The time is now before you lose the one big prospect "Mike Holgrem" who is willig to take on such a daunting task and fire the worthless Coach and bring back some respect!

LJB your smoking crack not only are the Gators not that good this year, they wouldn't stand a chance against any team in the NFL. I will admit they have some talent but Tebow isn't going to run anywhere against the speed and size of an NFL defensive line specially because his O-line would be crushed! A game like that would be lost in the trenches long before the first snap. I honestly would give Alabama a better shot than Florida but I can't think of any NCAA teams this year that have the O-line that would give them a fighting chance against an NFL team.

I fully realize this was the lions but this was the first game EVER mangina let quinn throw the ball downfeild. the result three passing td"s in the first quarter alone! mangina hs a b0ner for da and the only reason quinn was never allowed to throw downfeild was because coach was setting him up for failure. if quinn succeeds he makes fatboy look worse than he already does! lets see what the kid can do, we all know what anderson brings to the table a rocket arm and a pea sized brain...

I second the vote for Rob Ryan as head coach. If we can't get Gruden, Ryan is our best reasonable hope. His defense has shown that they're willing to give everything and not stop until the final whistle even though they're outclassed. They don't give up on their coordinator like the offense has.

Here's a thought, how about have Rob Ryan call the offensive and defensive plays? Who better to take a defense apart than someone that completely understands one. Besides, he can motivate the offense as well. It can be any worse than Daboll.

I would love to see Rob Ryan as head coach - The Cleveland Browns defense lacks quality players (even semi-competent ones) at many of the positions and they are playing their hearts out for this man! I see nothing even close on the offensive side of the ball (Mangini/Dabol)

The defense has played consistantly above their level of talent/experience and have actually kept this team somewhat competitive until they tire out after all the time they are required to be on the field due to this lame excuse for an offensive (and that is being tactful and generous)

It would be great to see if Ryan could get the same level of commitment out of the offensive players that he does the D players. The players clearly do not play hard for Mangini.

Brady Quinn might do better under a different offensive coordinator. Brian Daboll has to go! He doesn't have a clue what he's doing. Either way, with recievers running wrong patterns, we're doomed!

Bottom line is, Brady Quinn ,deserves a season or two to develop into his position, before a qualified decision could be made on his progress. With that being said, Tom Brady , Peyton Manning , or Drew Brees, would look bad with Clevelands existing offense. Mangini traded our playmakers away. So, Brady is not the problem. Theres no one making plays for the Browns, so to blame BQ would be inane. If anyone is at fault, its management.

I can not wait until that exciting browns/lions matchup next sunday 11/22. Is it possible for both teams to have negative points? First one to break even at zero wins game. Think it's safe to say that these two franchises are amongst the two worst in the league. Go IRISH!!

Seems Browns fans have poor short-term memories. For five years, we didn't have an NFL team in Cleveland until Al Lerner brought the Browns back in 1999. When he died, son Randy inherited the team. He obviously doesn't know how to hire "real" football men to run the operation, but he's learning (maybe) and I give him credit for admitting his shortcomings. I remember watching the Browns on black and white TV - before Jim Brown was drafted for the 1957 season - when the Browns, Lions and Giants dominated the NFL. That was Paul Brown's gig. PB was a tyrant coach too, but unlike Mangini, he knew football and how to field a winner having come up through the college coaching ranks. Despite the gut feeling that it was a mistake, I thought Mangini should be given a couple years to rebuild this team. However, it's apparent already he's still a ball boy. Despite the lousy stats, I think the defense has shown some improvement this year. But they're worn out by the fourth quarter because the offense is usually three-and-punt. That offensive coordinator (what's his name?), like Mangini, has no football smarts and no imagination. The defensive coordinator (Ryan) came from another dysfunctional franchise, but he has passion, potential and seems to know something about the game. I'd like to see Lerner hire a competent GM ASAP who will immediately fire Mangini and Draboll, promote Ryan to interim head coach, and spend the rest of this miserable 2009 season searching for a legitimate head coach. There are plenty of excellent veteran candidates out there right now (Hulmgren, Dungy, Gruden, Shanahan, Cowher, et. al.) as well as some good assistants. We Browns fans are the most die-hard in the NFL, but we're dyin' hard. Pro football is entertainment. If the product stinks, don't buy tickets until Lerner either gets a clue or sells out. But remember Modell. A new owner might move the franchise to LA.

I've been a browns fan since I went to see Jim Brown and the boys back in 1964. This is as bad as I can remember. This team needs an attitude. Instead of the wildcat they should try to run the "mad dog" and get out there and knock somebody on their ass!

I have been a Browns fan for almost 40 years. I cannot turn my back on them but I can sure jump on the bandwagon of the team like the Saints for awhile just to remember what it was like in the late 80's and early 90's again. I have all the hope in the world that something will click somewhere, whether it is Lerner, Mangini or the players and they figure this out.

Cheap scape LEARNER does not want to pay out 10.7 million when his team and I mean HIS team is 1-6 and going nowhere. He will not make light that he made a mistake, that every one else seemed to know, hiring Mangini. Even my computer does not like that word MANGINI!! No wonder he was fired. Then for all you fans he just puts manure on the field and expects you to pay for it. I think you fans in Ohio should boycott the whole game on national TV. to get every ones attention!! LEARNER really does not care he counts the nickles and dimes you people pay to see a cheap triple x team. You would get more out of a Sunday taking your wives out to dinner, instead of being upset after paying the outlandish price to watch LEARNER"S team make idiots out of you fans. I am convinced that is how he sees it and that is the way it will be till you all stay home.

Anderson's QB rating is 40, Quinn's is 62.4. We can only assume the Browns don't want to pay the bonus OR there's something personal between Quinn and someone significant in the Browns organization. That's too bad. They've taken the best fans in the NFL and turned their backs on them.

Dale - In order for Lewis to touch the ball 25+ times, that would mean that the Browns would need to KEEP the ball for more than 2 minutes at a time. Their ability to control the ball and keep defenses on the field is atrocious. They need more than just a couple pieces to field even a "respectable" team. And by respectable, I mean 6-7 wins!

As long as Mangini is the coach and continues with the personnel that he is using, 6 wins is a fantasy! Reality is more like 2-3 wins.

The Browns just need to plug a couple of decent folks into the offensive line and pound the ball. They have a ridiculously high win % when Lewis touches the ball 25 times. 10 -15 times isn't gonna cut it. The more he touches it, the better he gets as he pounds defenses into mistakes and the Browns come out victorious.
