Michael Crabtree: 49ers Optimistic

  • Print

Update: General manager Scot McCloughan is confident that the 49ers will be able to sign rookie Michael Crabtree(notes) to a contract before the regular season opener, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Recommendation: “It’ll get done,” McCloughan said Saturday. “What’s three or four months on a five- or six-year contract?” With the Bengals’ recent signing of Andre Smith(notes), Crabtree is the only first-round pick who hasn’t been signed yet. The 49ers are remaining steadfast to the slotting system for rookie contracts, reluctant to give Crabtree the Darius Heyward-Bey-type money that his agent, Eugene Parker, is believed to be seeking. Crabtree may be a viable fantasy option at some point during the season, but will face a rough transition period initially.

Greedy SOB. They should be paying him less than his slot now since he wont be giving him a full season. I'm really hoping he holds out, gets a career ending injury in the UFL, and never collects a dime from the NFL. Stupid rookies.

All first year players should have a "flat rate" rookie season, much like apprenticing in other trades.

The NFL needs to establish a salary range for ALL players (ie - base salary for Rookies - drafted or free-agent). All of the extra money should be in the form of performance bonuses that are negotiated. That way if you don't perform you don't get the money. This would eliminate all these friggin' agent-caused headaches. The agents would have to actually wait for their money also until they actually played and lived up to their hype. The down side would be that some of them wouldn't actually get much playing time so couldn't earn the bonus but if they were actually the impact player they were drafted to be they would be out on the field contributing. This would also ease the pain of the draft failures like Ryan Leaf and Tony Mandarich.

This is the part of the draft that sucks! Good players thinking that they deserve the world, instead of accepting a fat pay check(which instantly makes them rich as hell), they hold out to get a little more. All rookies should have a set pay scale, let them prove that they can play at this level! 49ers are looking better this year, but Crabtree will make them even better once he gets there! Lets hope they get it done this week so he can get his feet wet before the season starts. Go Niners!

If he doesn't sign with them, maybe I'll have him play on my football team, Robar's Rampage! Which is currently ranked 4th in the world on FlagMag.com.

Crabtree is gay... he aint TO or Moss, he hasnt been on the practice field nor preseason but already demands for more money? He needs to realize that he is playing in NFL, not Madden 10 for xbox.

crabtree will sign.. The niners will offer a smudge above the slotted draft position says to pay. They will not need to offer much more because there are too many similar examples available to the Crabtree camp which set the precident that if you don't sign/play you will be devastating the launch of your career for current times. Players need to be practicing and on the field with talented people around them or opposing them. Who was that Ohio state guy??? Maurice clarrett??.... I'm really not sure if thats even his name... FORGOTTEN after turning himself from a solid potential first rounder to a nothing with lost talent for not continuing play at a college or pro level and further developing his career education through the coaching staff, training regimine, practice, and the physical game... Just take a look at Ricky Williams.... Gone for a few years and then STILL trying to come back and for what???? Pennies on the dollar for what he could've been making... Fortunately for him this year I think he has finally approached his level of play that preceded his departure.. I think u will see a big year from him, but it has been at a tremendous cost of time, money, determination, and hardwork. Therefore, Crabtree will sign and the niners will give him a pinch more than he should get just to appease any critics and have a happy healthy new WR ready to do the ILL things on the field that he might be capable of at this level...

I think crabtree is hurting his chances to play by being a hold out if he wants to be drafted again he will not get first round he might be last cause all coaches will look at him a say if he didi that to the niners will he do that to another team niners can do without him

Let's cut the racist crap. I think the 49ers are gonna have an impressive year, Crabtree or no Crabtree. I don't think he's going to contribute much since he'll be far behind with the playbook and speed of the game.

All you guys are a bunch of racist dirtbags. Grow up. Mike Singletary held out at the beginning of his career and he went to the Hall of Fame. If Crabtree wasn't hurt, no way he falls to the 49'ers at ten. I just hope that when he signs that he works hard and doesn't become a Terrell Owens pain-in-the-ass.
