Broncos sign RB Travis Henry
ENGLEWOOD, COLORADO (TICKER) —It didn’t take running back Travis Henry long to find a place where he was wanted.
The Denver Broncos signed Henry on Monday, four days after the Tennessee Titans cut ties with the six-year veteran.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed but NFL.com reported on its web site that Henry signed a five-year contract that includes $12 million of guaranteed money. He signed with the Broncos before making scheduled visits to meet with representatives from Oakland, Green Bay and the New York Giants.
Perhaps the best running back on the free agent market, Henry had a strong 2006 season after a pair of injury-filled campaigns. He rushed for 1,211 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.
However, the Titans refused to pay Henry an $8.5 million roster bonus he was due March 1, making him a free agent and ending his two-year stay in his home state.
Henry, 27, appears to be a good fit for the Broncos, who traded 1,000-yard rusher Tatum Bell to the Detroit Lions last week. Unheralded Mike Bell is Denver’s top returning rusher.
In four seasons in Buffalo, Henry twice eclipsed 1,300 yards. He has 5,395 yards and 34 TDs in 78 career games.
The Broncos, who missed the playoffs last season, are rebuilding their entire offensive backfield. Over the weekend, they traded quarterback Jake Plummer to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the intention of leaving Jay Cutler in the starting role.
Denver also signed guard Montrae Holland and running back Paul Smith on Monday.
Holland spent his first four seasons with New Orleans, playing in 52 games, including 30 starts. Smith is entering his seventh season in the league and spent the 2006 campaign with the St. Louis Rams.
