Vikings hoping Winfield will be ready for Steelers
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)—Antoine Winfield(notes), the Minnesota Vikings’ smallest player, left a giant hole in the defense when he left the game against Baltimore with a sprained right foot.
The Vikings are hoping the 5-foot-9, 180-pound Pro Bowl cornerback can be ready for a big test Sunday in Pittsburgh against the suddenly pass-happy Steelers.
But Winfield has missed the first two days of practice this week, which is not a good sign.
“If there’s anybody that has a chance (to play) because of the notes he takes and how he looks at it, (it’s Winfield),” coach Brad Childress said Thursday. “At some point you have to warm up and move around, but I don’t know right now.”
The contrast between the defense with Winfield and without was stark against the Ravens. The Vikings forced Baltimore to punt on its first five possessions as they jumped out to a 14-0 lead. One of the league’s best tackling cornerbacks held the edge against Baltimore’s running backs and kept receivers Derrick Mason(notes) and Mark Clayton(notes) under wraps.
But he went down in the second quarter, and Joe Flacco(notes) started to pick apart the secondary from then on out.
“I don’t think you can (compensate) for a guy like Antoine with some of the things he does,” defensive tackle Kevin Williams(notes) said. “He’s so physical. You very seldom see corners like that, who are that physical in the run game. He plays a big part when we’re in our Cover 2 defense. Those guys know they’re role and they’ll step up and help us out with that.”
Flacco went right at backup Karl Paymah(notes), who played almost exclusively on special teams in the first five games of the season. Paymah was beaten throughout the second half, particularly when Flacco threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns in a 21-point final period.
One of the most glaring plays was a 63-yard catch-and-run by running back Ray Rice(notes) to Winfield’s side of the field.
“You don’t think that’s going to happen if he’s out there,” defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said.
The Vikings (6-0) held on for the 33-31 win when Steve Hauschka’s 44-yard field was wide left at the final whistle.
“It was a tough position to put any corner in last week,” linebacker Ben Leber(notes) said. “Backups get marginal reps during the week and to ask these guys to come in and play at a high level is a tough thing to do. No doubt they have to do it. This is our first real test with (Winfield) not being in the lineup so it still remains to be seen.”
Childress said they will evaluate Winfield throughout the week, hoping to make a decision on his playing status by Sunday. But Leber wasn’t the only player speaking as if they would be without one of their leaders against the physical Steelers offense.
“When one guy goes down, the next guy stands up,” cornerback Cedric Griffin(notes) said. “We have talented guys here on our team. All of our games just have to elevate and just replace Antoine.”
The timing is difficult for the Vikings, who are off to their best start since 2003.
The Steelers (4-2) have morphed from a power-running team into a wide-open, shotgun attack. Ben Roethlisberger(notes) has attempted at least 30 passes in all six games and threw for 417 yards last week against Cleveland. Receiver Hines Ward(notes) leads the league in receiving and Santonio Holmes(notes) and tight end Heath Miller(notes) give the Steelers a balanced aerial offense.
It remains to be seen what the Vikings will do if Winfield cannot play. Paymah could get the start, or nickel back Benny Sapp(notes) could slide to the outside to take Winfield’s place. Asher Allen(notes), a third-round pick out of Georgia, is a candidate to be activated for the first time in his career.
“We all have confidence in myself, Karl Paymah, Benny, Asher,” Griffin said. “We’ll get the job done.
Allen has been practicing both on the outside and covering the slot in the team’s nickel package.
“I played corner my whole career in college. I played in the SEC and went against talented receivers that are in the NFL now,” Allen said. “Also played nickel. If coach wants to put me outside, he can do that, if when wants to put me inside, just whatever’s best for the team I’ll be doing it.”

I also saw 1 poster that said the Steelers have nothing on defense other than Troy. Really? Ever heard of James Harrison, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year!!!! The guy started off slow but has 6 sacks and 4 forced fumbles - ALL W/O Troy!!!! We also had the #1 DEFENSE in the league last year by a mile and will be on top again this year as time goes on.
I think the Vikings have a great team but it's just not going into Pittsburgh andhandling the Steelers. That's not to say that Minnesota won't win but get real, they won't blow the Steelers away. We are to balabnced with Mendenhall and Big Ben to be schooled by an offense that was gross last year. I know that Favre is there now but that doesn't mean we can't pressure him into the Favre of old. You know the 2-4 int's in a big game Favre.

The Schmucks that say either of these teams suck or will get destroyed are morons...and the peckerhead categorizing the Steelers Fans to the yankees fans shows your intelligence...which apparently ranks on the negative side of the IQ Chart.
Have a great weekend.

Hey, Vikes fan and looking forward to this game because it's going to be a brutal hard hitting football game. I believe that because of lack of history, there's no real rivalry between the teams and on Sunday, the team that shows up and plays 60 minutes is going to win. And after watching the first 6 Vikes games, it's probably going to take 60 if not more against the Steelers who are tough all around. With that being said, if Winfield is out, and with the Steelers having home field, I can't be@#$%y about an all out Vikes win. Troy P. for the Steelers is also an X factor because damn, my Vikes have some speed and size but that dude is a beast, the Winfield of safetys for sure.
Kudos for those who actually know football and don't say their team is going to dominate in a game that is obviously going to be close because both teams are damn good in this one. If you are one of those who has no idea that there are 31 other teams in the league besides your favorite (Vikes or Steelers in this case), watch some Sportscenter and learn about the team you are talking Shizz about and you will sound much less like an idiot. If AP has a big game and the Vikes D shows up, with or without Winfield, and Favre keeps doing his thing, the Vikes will have a chance to win in the 4th quarter. That's all, as a fan, I can really ask for this year. Spread even in this one, SKOAL VIKES!

Probably be without Winfield this week....that's a blow but all teams are dealing with injuries...the Vikes have been pretty lucky in that category so far. Asher Allen, let's see what the kid's got.....All Day gonna have to kick it into high gear for this one...not like he knows any other way to play besides full-out. Steelers are a good team, they the Champs until February and we a long way from the playoffs yet. Polamalu probably won't be up at the line as much as usual as he recovers...they lost their pass run-stuffing DE for the year...Jared Allen needs to have a big day for us to succeed. Don't let Ben move around in the pocket, don't give him time like he had last week...
Gonna be some good old fashioned football between two warrior QB's and two stud defenses. You know the Vikes will want to show some pride on D after last weeks 4th quarter debacle. Really looking forward to this game of two smashmouth teams with something to prove.
Skol Vikes, with due respect to Steeltown. May the best team win.

The Vikes could have miracle on there side this year Favre bringing 2 miracles already in first 5 games with big TD pass and he sat and didn't watch feild goal while praying and they missed it was cool.
I really don't know what to expect in this game but it is 2 of the NFL's best and no matter what will be good. If winfield doesnt play i would pick Steelers for sure cause winfield is really dinamic player and Ben can pass. Steeler can stop run so brett to pass and get rushed could be trouble. Like i said tuff pick on this one. I think turnovers will cost one team in this one. But all the bashing should stop Steelers are great NFL team no matter what and Vikes are historic but need a title bad and thats that. It's hard to win titles in MN u know?
