Childress signs extension with Vikings

  • Print

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)—The man who brought Brett Favre(notes) to the Minnesota Vikings will be sticking around for a while.

The Vikings signed Brad Childress to a contract extension on Thursday, nine games into what is shaping up as a promising season for the men in purple. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. ESPN.com cited anonymous sources in reporting that the extension will carry through the 2013 season.

“Brad has done a tremendous job leading this football team and we value the positive environment he has created for the Minnesota Vikings on and off the field,” Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said in a statement issued by the team. “He has continued to positively impact this team and create a strong foundation for future success.”

Childress, in the fourth year of his original five-year, $10 million deal, was hired in 2006 to take over a team in turmoil. The Vikings had become a national punchline for a string of incidents under the loose regime of Mike Tice, including the infamous “Love Boat” scandal and Tice’s admission to scalping Super Bowl tickets that prompted Wilf to institute a code of conduct for the organization.

Childress has restored order and dignity to the franchise, and has done plenty of winning of late, as well. The Vikings have improved each year under his watch. They went 6-10 in 2006, 8-8 in 2007 and 10-6 with an NFC North title last season.

This season, he convinced Favre to come out of retirement one more time to join the Vikings, even going so far as to pick up the quarterback at the airport on the day of his arrival in August.

Favre leads the NFL in quarterback rating, has thrown 17 touchdowns and just three interceptions, and has helped put the Vikings (8-1) in position to compete for the top seed in the NFC.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I was given,” Childress said. “I’ve got a good group of guys in the locker room, which I’ve said over and over. I’ve got a great ownership group. Not only am I grateful for them, they’ve been good owners from a standpoint of empowering us with players. They listen. There’s a good dialogue.”

The Wilf family has broken the bank to sign big-money players like defensive end Jared Allen(notes), who leads the league in sacks, All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson(notes) and receiver Bernard Berrian(notes).

They have also poured money into upgrading the team’s headquarters in Eden Prairie and steadfastly supported Childress even when he was the subject of criticism by fans early in his tenure.

“They have to buy into the vision of how you see the Minnesota Vikings going forward and we’ve been good enough to be able to fulfill part of that vision,” Childress said.

The next step is to do some damage in the playoffs. The Vikings were beaten at home by the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round last season, the first time Childress has been a head coach in the postseason.

Thanks to the addition of Favre, the team is much more balanced this season. The Vikings have already built a commanding three-game lead on the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North and are one game behind the New Orleans Saints for the best record in the conference.

Childress, Wilf and the rest of the Vikings organization were unavailable for further comment after the news was announced on Thursday night.

kappenma- Name for me one year where Sanders had even an average line to block for him? I dont agree so much with mikeg, but if your gonna try to put someone in thier place, you could at least do so while providing good information, rather than just throwing stuff out there. Your just as bad as he is.

Right now, like him or not, AP is the best. However, lets see how he rates when he reaches 30-32 years old. My prediction is that his hard running style will wear him out. Barber isnt as good as AP, but he was pretty scary sometimes with how hard he ran, but look at him now, just a couple years later, and hes already beat up, and not quite as effective as he was. AP, there is no shame in running away from defenders, hit em when ya gotta, but dont hit em because you can.

see michael g, now you sound like the idiot. because i was calling you out for saying that peterson can only run over off-balance defenders, which is not the case. if you truly believe that, then you really were watching adrian peterson of the bears. and now you're taking everything i said out of context and making a huge a$s out of yourself. nobody ever said that he can run over 11 guys without any blocking. nobody ever said his moves were better than barry sanders. you said all of that, and that's the first time i read that kind of stuff on this board. you're just over re-acting to somebody actually calling you out with logical statements, instead of outlandish, nearly idiotic, statements that you are making...

I think it's a great move. I am shocked at how many people forget what a mess that team was after Moss and Culpeper disintegrated and then there were all the other off field issues. That team wasn't going anywhere with Tice.

Favre was obviously the last piece of the puzzle and I think that the fact that he went after him and got him when a lot of analysts and other teams thought that he was done is a testament to just how good a coach he is. It could have blown up, but I thought that he handled the whole situation pretty well and the locker room meltdown that everyone predicted never happened. He knows his team and made them better.

He's also managed to improve each season and with just one playoff appearance and loss to a hot Eagles team (remember they made it to the NFC Championship game last year) shows that he has the team headed in the right direction.

Before you judge too harshly and wish for a new coach take a moment to look around the league and see how many new coaches are in the league this year and look at their records. I bet that TB wished they still had Gruden for example. The McDaniel experiment in DEN is starting to show some signs of cracks and most of the other 1st or 2nd year coaches are going through some tough times right now. Giving him a new contract was a smart move in my book.

no micahel g, you have not watched peterson...unless you mean the adrian peterson that plays for the bears. because the adrian peterson that plays for the vikings lowers his head and blows thru people trying to takle him, not people that are "off balance" as you claim...idiot

Fishinmusician is right childress can coach in the regular season, but cant seem to get it done in the playoffs. This move is retarded, its the middle of the season, why would you pay an unproven coach more money for nothing. He might lose favre next season but there stuck with childress through 2013. I think this move was to hasty.

This is a mistake by the Vikings. I have been a life-long fan, and I believe the Vikings are winning DESPITE having Childress there. He makes poor decisions at clutch times- fortunately the level of talent in Minnesota just simply can't be topped.

I would have liked to have seen Chilly replaced. I still wish Tomlin had been promoted and not let slip away.

No one to give the ball to? With Grant avg 4.2 yds a carry, GB HAS a RB to give the ball to. They just choose to throw and running QB sneaks to pad stats.

228 - Bunnies ~ Indeed.... he sure does need to get rid of that ball a lot quicker. The other 40% problem is having no one to give it too! Since it's only Rodgers 2nd starting season, he's got a ways to go. If we can pull it together, keep Rodgers on his feet, and off the injury list, we may just have another future hall of famer in him!!
    GO PACK GO !!!!

( Let's hope for the Seattle upset this week!!!!)

MN local and lifelong Vikes fan. I've been reading some of these posts and had to put my two cents in. Peterson is, by far, the best back in the NFL right now. He not only runs the defense over, but he also makes them hug air. Yes, he does have a great O-line to run behind, but just look at the tape of his two long runs against Detroit. Both times he was stopped behind the line of scrimmage and still managed to get out of it and bust a long run. He just needs to protect the ball a little better. Look at the Cleveland game, the Pittsburgh game, any game, he gets it done. I will say that he has to stay consistant for years to come to be compared to Barry Sanders, because, let's face it, Sanders AVERAGED over 1500 yards his entire career behind a completely non-existant O-line. If Sanders had even a fraction of the line the Peterson has, Sanders would NEVER have to worry about somebody breaking his career rushing yards. And about Childress, he is a great judge of talent. He just can't coach. The Vikes Offense was horrendous while Childress was calling the offensive plays a few years ago. It was all the same: run, run, pass, punt; run, run, pass, punt. It got better when he finally let his O-Coordinator actually do his job. I also agree that Favre is the main reason for our great record right now. Had it not been for Favre, we would've lost to San Fran, Baltimore, and Green Bay at Green Bay (we still would've won at home). We need another QB for when Favre retires, again, and we need a second starting CB. Because the opposing QBs are having way too much fun without Winfield in there.

I am a Packer fan so naturally I hate the Vikings.

Peterson will be better than Emmit, and Peyton.
He is not the back that Sanders was. No one ever will be.

Rodgers is responsible for 60% of the sacks. He has forgotten what it means to throw the ball away. The O-line is in need of attention, anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

The O-Line is fine for GreenBay. Grant is avg 4.2 yds a carry compared to Peterson's 5.1 yds. The only difference is Peterson is Better. Favre gets sacked a lot. Not as much as Rodgers because he holds on to the ball to long. Plus all they do is throw the ball if they gave the ball more to Grant they'd be a more balanced team which would lead to more wins and less sacks. Peterson has 11 tds because they give him the ball in the redzone. Grant has 4 because they will choose to pad Rodgers stats with a QB sneak rather then give it to Grant. If they arn't running up the score on weak teams way after the game is over and running so many QB sneaks Rodgers stats wouldn't be as good. Face it, the problem is management. They'd rather have Rodgers look good and lose then win and Rodgers play poorly. They are trying to justify letting Favre go.

    # 225 - michael g --
You say that AP doesn't lower the boom and deliver hits? You must not watch him play very closely if your standing by that statement. I have watched him play games this year where he lowers his shoulder pad and hits hard, right after a swing out to the sideline. I even remember others commenting about how he shouldn't lower his shoulder and go for so many hits if he wants to extend his professional career.
That whole O-line comment -- You can't have a great running game unless you have a great O-line. No O-line, no holes... Same goes for QB... If the O-line can't protect the QB, than the QB has no time to throw, or will make unwise decisions.

yes i have watched peterson you idiot!!!!!! i know what im talking about, yes he does get a lil contact but thats after a big ass hole is there for him and hes running full speed so he moves a lil and catches people off balance did he lower his shoulders and deliver a hit? no he didnt and the point was he dont deliver the hit and run over people, hes never hit someone and make them turn around......jus cuase hes stacking up the stats like emmit smith does not put him in the same catagory so your saying emmit smith is better that payton, sanders or brown cuase hes got more yards in stats???? didnt think so,so before you open your dumb mouth look at some you tube or something cuase you obviously jus started watch football......and dont call people jealous cuase i didnt say he was garbage i jus said hes got a great front line and hes not in the same catagory as the best!!!!! loser
