Nike: No ‘contractual relationship’ with Vick

NEW YORK (AP)—Nike said Thursday it does not have a “contractual relationship” with Michael Vick(notes), a day after the quarterback’s agent announced a deal with the manufacturer.

In a statement released Thursday morning, Nike said it has “agreed to supply product to Michael Vick as we do a number of athletes who are not under contract with Nike.”

On Wednesday, Michael Principe, the managing director of BEST, the agency that represents Vick, announced the Philadelphia Eagles player had a new deal with Nike during a panel discussion at the Sports Sponsorship Symposium.

“He actually just became a Nike client,” Principe said Wednesday. “He has a new deal with Nike that we’re all very pleased about.”

Principe declined comment Thursday.

Vick’s agent, Joel Segal, said later Wednesday that Vick looked forward to continuing his relationship with Nike, adding that the player and company had agreed not to release terms of the deal.

Segal did not immediately return a call for comment Thursday.

Nike had initially declined comment Wednesday night.

Nike, which signed Vick as a rookie in 2001, terminated his contract in August 2007 after he filed a plea agreement admitting his involvement in a dogfighting ring.

    Hey Jacqueline, Post 864 - WHATS HAPPENING! I am back in LA and I see no reprieve from the morons posting on this blog. This "Jason" is a real nut job. I would rather drive down the road with a bag of furtilizer sitting in the passenger seat and talk to it, instead of him. I am contemplating a drive to Area 51 in Nevada over the weekend to get my perspective back. I showed my wife you comments and she laughed like hell. My wife raises hell on the Ohio State Buckeyes postings because she went to Michigan. She really gets those meat balls from Ohio stirred up. They respond very illogically and she is helping me do a better job of agitating others. We are a matched set. My wife states that we are perfect for each other, because no one else will have either of us.

    Vick has relised that the NFL is a privledge. Many "like" him think the NFL is the NAACP and feel they're owed something. Our boy now knows his place.

    Kevin, good point, but in emotionally healthy people, there is a general well-spring of emotion that comes from whatever stimuli they react to, blocks for the neurotics, and faking from sociopaths. We are a higher-functioning mammal.

    Snowball, I'm sorry. :) Just so you know, I still love dogs in that they're are social animals, and the ones that are friendly and just want to play and eat and sleep, I can definitely relate. I don't know how you look at their faces and eyes and not just want to pet them and play. Carlin used to say that he thinks thay emotion on their face comes from the fact they have something akin to eyebrows.

    TPOD - I see what you are saying but without being scientific about it. People love animals and so whether or not it's true emotion or a meeting of their needs, We like to think that they love us like we love them. Of course you have now ruined my day for when I go home and watch that tail wiggle all over, I'm going to know it's because of the treat she'll get for being good all day.... and then I'll say..     As far as moral fiber. There was an indication that there is much more in any old mutt than there is in the punk named Jason.

    Interesting ideas there, TPOD. You could apply that theory to people as well. What is emotion after all? What is "moral" and what is "normal behaviour"? Animals don't generally kill for sport, but cats, for example, WILL toy with a bird or mouse just to watch it die..many people are the same. I just get sick and tired of regular people who feel the need to make excuses for spoiled, priveleged athletes and their actions (white, black, whatever). Seems like NIKE blinked when they saw how much negative pub they would get on this, if it ever was a legitimate story to begin with and I doubt it was. Just like Vick is not a legitimate QB..

    My dog is nicer, sweeter, more loyal and loving than most PEOPLE I have ever met. People are ANIMALS, lest you forget that all you "dog killin" supporters. No, I'm not an animal freak but some of you need a different perspective. Alot of people behave worse than animals do and SHOULD be locked up, not celebrated and given chance, after chance,after chance to be millionaires-and I don't mean Vick in particular..I'm SURE he's a kind, loyal, loving person who just enjoys enjoys watching a brutal, bloody killing/torture once in awhile..Go Cowboys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Snowball, there is no indication that their obedience is due to the concept of love as defined by humans. Dogs have evolved in terms of their ability to engage in social communication. Thus, what appears to be love and loyalty could just be the way the species has learned how to get its needs met by a more dominant species. Which is not to say they aren't loyal or experience emotion, but how much is genuine emotion vs learned behavior recognized as favorable is still being studied. And this moral code is a human concept, so again, it doesn't originate from the animal.

    Again I'm being proven correct.....there really is more moral fiber in most dogs than in most humans. They love unconditionally, they don't fight unless there is reason, and best of all........ they can't speak.
