Vick warns DC crowd away from dogfighting

  • Print

WASHINGTON (AP)—Michael Vick(notes) told a sparse crowd at a Washington church on Tuesday that dogfighting is pointless and he doesn’t know why he risked his career for it.

“I got caught up in the culture,” the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback said at Covenant Baptist Church, in one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. “I never thought that I would get caught.”

The former Atlanta Falcons star was released from federal custody July 20 after serving 18 months of a 23-month sentence for running the ring in Surry County, Va.

The church appearance was sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States. Vick has been working with the group since his release and has appeared at similar events in Atlanta, Chicago and Philadelphia.

“I used poor judgment. I had people around me who didn’t have my best interests at heart,” he said.

When he played for the Falcons, Vick said, he would go home every week to fight dogs.

“For what reason, I don’t know to this day,” he said. “Something so pointless.”

Vick played for the first time Sunday since December 2006. He carried once for 7 yards, threw two incompletions and either handed off or was a decoy on eight other plays in the Eagles’ 34-14 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Vick, who came to the church with his fiancee and their children, said he feels lucky to be alive after being involved in a dangerous subculture.

“Who knows what could have happened at 3 in the morning when you’re fighting dogs?” he said. “It’s almost like being involved in the streets, dealing drugs, in criminal life.”

Vick referred to himself as “an animal rights advocate,” but said little about dogs or other animals during his speech.

That task was left to Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society.

“We really do believe that all the animals here are God’s creatures,” Pacelle said.

The talk was supposed to be geared toward young people, and the Humane Society said it invited students from several neighborhood schools. But only about half of the several dozen people who turned up for the event were children or teenagers.

Hey all, I work in the Law Enforcement field, and what i say is my own personal opinion, but I see people like Vick every day. In the past 16 years I have worked this field, I have seen VERY few who actually regret what they have done and made positive improvements in their lives. Has Vick paid society for his crime? YES, he served his imposed penalty as required. Does he deserve a second chance? YES. What he does with it, is up to him.

Once again he shows his true colours. Blaming the culture and his peers for his actions instead of taking personal responsibility. Then he says he's against dogfighting because it's pointless and because it puts you in a dangerous situation. He hasn't changed, he still doesn't care about dogs, and he's sorry he got caught.

Here we go again. Mr. uncommon sense makes his thinly veiled racial comments again. No taxpayers live in inner cities according to you? then how do these cities survive? Do you really think cities tax residents from outside their jurisdiction to function?? You are by-far the most nonsensical poster i have come across on these yahoo forums. You make no sense what-so-ever. You still havent figured out that NO-ONE cares what you think or who you forgive. You are a peon. accept it. Love it. Embrace it. You are meaningless. Yahoo comment section is where you go to try to be relevant. How pathetic is that.

Deb, as long as he commits no further crimes, it doesn't matter from a legal standpoint what's in his eyes, heart, or anyplace else. He's deserved the criticism he's gotten for his actions, but as long as he stays clean in terms of behavior, what's going on inside is irrelevant.

I'm harboring the same hate for the NFL,MLB,NBA NHL, etc.,etc., There should be new guidelines set for pro athletes...ONE AND DONE ! NO IF'S , AND'S, OR BUT'S !! You get convicted of a Felony, and your life as a pro, end's. It would stop all the sideshow antic's of these loser's, and provide a chance for other deserving athletes, "that act like all other law abiding people", to play their respective sport's' and would actually, make the game's that more enjoyable to watch. There's alot of talent out there, besides michael vick, stallworth, and the list goe's on ,and on, and on. The rule should apply to college level too. Black, white, blue, green, or purple. These ass-h%$es ruin the sport's for everyone.

I think that Mike Vick has paid and continues to pay for his involvement in dog fighting and what is interesting about all of this is that a certain part of our society will never forgive him for killing dogs but are related to relatives who killed people just because they hated the color of their skin. I just wonder if those same people would have been as critical if maybe some of those persons who killed other (human beings) whether they belive it or not seen them go to jail as oppose to being praised for their deeds.

The problem with Vick is...he still doesn't understand what was wrong with killing dogs. He is sorry it interrupted his life but never has he talked about the dogs , what he did and never has he shown any compassion about the dogs. Look at his eyes when he talks. They tell what the true Vick is about. Folks are not watching and listening. To be an advocate takes some dedication and belief in the cause. He is dedicated to Michael Vick and will say whatever is needed to get his career back.

Serving his time??? I don't think he has begun to do that yet!!!!

Here we go again. Vick speaks in another inner city church where all he has are supporters. Hey moron, go to a suburban church, wher taxpayers live and go to the NFL games and give your little lying through you teeth speech. We all see your failed attempts to change you ways, For me to accept your remorse, jump off the Golden gate Bridge!

Yes , what Vick did was HORRIBLE. He got caught and served his time. Lets at least give him a sincere chance . He is doing what was put upon him and thats part of the community service he is to serve. Time will only tell if he is TRULY sincere. Lets give him that chance as EVERYONE is NOT perfect and WE do make mistakes and WE NEED to make amends.

What's wrong with owning up to what he did, and then teaching kids not to get involved in dog fighting? That's a positive spin. Let him man up... that's all he's trying to do.
The negative spin on this is that people still hate him, and people still love him. Articles like this have people arguing about dogs, and race, and religion !! Don't let Michael Vick bring out the worst in you. Unless of course, you are an Eagles fan and you're realizing (finally) that people don't come out of nearly 2 years in prison and play with the skill and stamina as before all the hours spent crying behind bars.
