Fisher switches to Young at QB for 0-6 Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams wants more of Vince Young(notes). He’s getting just that with his winless team switching from veteran Kerry Collins(notes) back to the 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Coach Jeff Fisher announced the expected move Thursday following practice for the 0-6 Titans, and Young got the news from his coach in the morning. Fisher insists it was an organizational decision resulting from the team’s winless start and that he won’t play musical chairs with the position.

“We’re in a unique situation right now. We haven’t won a game. We wouldn’t be having this conversation if we were 3-3,” Fisher said.

That means Young will start Sunday against Jacksonville (3-3), the team that helped send him to the bench in the 2008 opener by picking him off twice and spraining his knee. Collins started 20 of the 21 games since then.

Young has eight career interceptions against Jacksonville with only three touchdown passes. He also has more career interceptions (33) than TD passes (22). But he has won five of his last six starts and is 18-11 as a starter. Young thanked Fisher for giving him a chance to sit back, develop and learn from Collins.

“For him to give me a shot again to go out and give it a chance again is big for me because I’ve been waiting,” Young said.

The move appeared inevitable since the Titans lost 59-0 at New England on Oct. 18. Adams told The Tennessean newspaper after that loss in New England that he wanted to see more of Young.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2006 draft split the work evenly with Collins at practice Wednesday but took all snaps with the first-team offense Thursday.

Collins wasn’t happy or surprised by the move, which came a day after the Titans started prepping for their next game.

“When you’re 0-6, then heads are going to roll. More times than not, it’s the quarterback,” Collins said.

Young started the meaningless regular season finale at Indianapolis last December, so this will be his first start under pressure since that 2008 season opener.

It’s a game best known for Young being booed by the home fans and refusing at first to go back on the field until prompted by Fisher. Young sprained his knee a few plays later, then sparked a police hunt the next day when he drove off from his home with a gun in his car. The quarterback blamed his mother for overreacting.

“If we win, it’s going to be good,” Young said. “If we lose, it’s all going to be Vince Young’s fault. I just want to go out and play and get my rhythm back and put smiles on my coaches’ faces and my teammates’ faces and definitely the fans.”

Collins led Tennessee to a 13-3 record and signed a two-year deal in the offseason to return as the starter. He hasn’t been helped by at least 18 drops by his receivers.

But the Titans are off to a start that is their worst ever under Fisher, and Young is the quarterback the franchise drafted No. 3 overall in 2006 with a $4.25 million bonus due in March. He also is slated to count $14.2 million against the salary cap if on the roster in 2010.

Linebacker Keith Bulluck(notes) said the start wasn’t Collins’ fault.

“We’re going with V.Y., and I’m happy for him in the sense that he’s someone who lost his spot and had to sit back, take a back seat, be humbled out a little bit but has learned a lot in that time. I’m kind of looking forward to see how he’s grown as a player,” Bulluck said.

Young replaced Collins in 2006 in the fourth game of an 0-5 start, and the Titans wound up winning eight of their final 11 that season to just miss a playoff berth.

The Jaguars sound as if they expected Young to play all along.

“The owner said who he wants to play,” said Jaguars linebacker Clint Ingram(notes), who played against Young in college when he was at Oklahoma.

AP Sports Writer Mark Long in Jacksonville, Fla., contributed to this report.

Racists, start making your excuses now. Vince Young, "black", "unable" blah blah blah. Collins, white, 0-6 with the same crappy team, supposedly smarter, brighter and better.... whatever.... ANd if you start pulling that "It was just 1 game", then where was Collins "1 game"?

    Racist Losers....

You can't argue with racism. Black QBs have won super bowls, in countless pro bowls, have a less success/bust ratio than whites, have 10 year+ tenures on one team, hall of famers, passed for near 50,000+ yards in a season, averaged 100+ qb rating in a season, super bowl appearances, 200+ career touch down passes, the list for what makes a successful QB has been done and will continue to be done, have higher career win percentages than troy aikmen, phil sims, dan marino, yet still people say they can't play. Most of these people who say blacks can't play are half educated. The black QB excuse is the same excuse racists used to say about black pitchers, boxers, track stars, presidents etc etc etc etc. Given time the truth comes out.

I agree with Eric N. Leave race out of it... I can't stand Donovan McNabb but it has nothing to do with his race. I was the biggest Randall Cunningham fan you couyld imagine. I think Vince Young was a great college QB but doesnt have what it take to succeed in the NFL. I hope he proves me wrong.

Gee, all this about Vince Young. Does anyone consider that the Titan's have no defense this year. Is anyone missing the big guy, Albert Hainsworth? I agree he isn't worth what he was asking in the twilight of his career. Dropped passes by recievers and no defense, not Kerry Collins is the problem this year. The opposing teams don't have to double team anyone on the defense this year. Still a Titan's fan, just a major rebuilding is probably going to happen. Maybe it's time.

In the NFL it's all about production. Dimwits can read books like the Bell Curve all day long but at the end of the day what you do on the field counts. So David T, what's your excuse for Joey Harrington, Tim Couch, Heath Shuler, Ryan Leaf, Danny Wurfel, Rex Grossman, David Carr, Alex Smith and J.P Losman. These geniuses didn't last in the NFL long enough to get the feel of the pigskin. Time will tell if Vince Young will "get it" by checking his ego at the door, but what about Matt Lineart, he's had chance after chance to replace a 38 year old quarterback. Do those Harvard professors a favor, tell them that they need no give back their book advance and sales, because their thesis is full of *hit!

David T, the only people I ever hear bringing up the Bell Curve are white people trying to prove negative stereotypes about blacks. Vince Young has a winning record as a starting quarterback in the NFL with a playoff appearance, putting him ahead of fellow draft classmates Leinart and Cutler (who went to Vanderbilt). Thre rest of this season will tell us about his maturity level and time committed to learning the game.

Read 'The Bell Curve' and, then, if you have any doubt as to which kind of people have the intellectual capacity to play QB at the highest level in the NFL....well read it again. Fascinating book, and so well written by two Harvard Professors. I've read it 3 times, but I flip through it regularly for reference when debates like this come up.

man, what a crapshoot that draft turned out to be in hindsight... Cutler isn't winning games now for Chicago and Linehart may never get off the bench and Young is basically a trainwreck, slightly better than JaMarcuse Russell....

I have a feeling that this is the last hurrah for Jeff Fisher in Nashville....Everybody knows it wasn't his decision to play Young... Wasn't he against drafting him as well? Collins was supposed to merely be a game manager, Young is going to be asked to go out and try to win games... Yikes!

Young definitely has a lot to work on, but I bet he could be pretty dangerous in the wildcat formation if the rest of the team gets it together.

Why would anyone cite McNabb as an example of an "unsuccessful black QB?" McNabb has had a very good career. Injuries have been McNabb's biggest problem, and those can affect anyone.

What's with the people acting like whether a QB is black or white makes a difference? I would've thought that McNabb's successful career would've been enough for the people that didn't remember Randall Cunningham. Vince Young's problems have had nothing to do with his race. Who knows if Vince will pull it together or not? Either way, the idea that any person cannot do something because of his or her race is really disturbing.

Lets hope this can be talked about without racial slurs. One poster mentioned Russell, Young, Vick and McNabb. Well McNabb has proven he is a quality NFL QB. Vick before his suspension was the prototype "new" QB that emphasized running and passing. The wildcat would have been a great thing for Vick during his heyday. As for Russell and Young, both are examples of college teams adjusting their teams to their QB's strengths to win (which is the point of playing). Young's team switch from a pro style offense to more of an option to take advantage of Young's running. Russell is more of a passer than Young, stronger and more accurate, but like the majority of college QBs going into the NFL...the speed and quickness of AVERAGE NFL linemen and backers is far and above all college teams. Plus you have corners and safeties who are in those positions for usually twice as long as the college players even PLAYED college ball. Russell and Young both need/needed more instruction at the NFL level that they didnt get. Russell's power arm is an asset that needs to be exploited (much like Big Ben for Pittsburgh). Young's scrambling ability and being able to throw on the run (much like Favre). Both need to be developed. It also helps when you have veteran recievers and TE to throw to, who help make new QBs look better than they are (Ryan?). Lets hope all the young QBs get some real training and instruction.
