Fisher will announce starting QB on Thursday

  • Print

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Jeff Fisher knows he can’t keep the identity of his starting quarterback secret until kickoff Sunday even if he wants to.

So the Tennessee coach is trying to keep it quiet for another 24 hours.

Fisher said Wednesday he will announce his starter Thursday, trying to carve out another day of competitive advantage for the winless Titans against Jacksonville (3-3).

“I’m going to assume that as long as we can keep this thing a mystery, the better chances we have. There’s clearly a difference in skill-sets between the two quarterbacks. That’s obvious,” Fisher said.

The coach stuck with Kerry Collins(notes) as his starter all season. But the Titans are 0-6, and owner Bud Adams reportedly wants to see Vince Young(notes) start Sunday.

Neither Collins nor Young spoke to reporters Wednesday, and offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger was not available to three reporters asking to speak to him after practice. The Titans signed John David Booty(notes) to the practice squad Wednesday, and he worked with the scout team—duties that had been handled solely by Young since Patrick Ramsey(notes) was cut Oct. 3.

The quarterbacks are very different.

Collins is the pocket passer with the accurate arm. But the 15-year veteran has eight interceptions—one more than all of last season. His receivers have dropped at least 18 passes, Collins is completing just 54.8 percent of his passes, the offense ranks last in the NFL in time of possession and the Titans haven’t scored a touchdown in eight quarters.

Young remains best known for his legs than his arm, having rushed for 979 yards since being drafted No. 3 overall in 2006. He is 18-11 as a starter, a job he lost to Collins in the 2008 season opener against the Jaguars after being intercepted twice and spraining his knee.

“I still have faith in Kerry Collins, that’s our guy,” linebacker Keith Bulluck(notes) said. “No one in this locker room, no one on this team said anything. That call came from the head.”

Asked if Young would be ready if promoted to starter, Bulluck referred questions to the quarterback. But he said Young’s got to be ready because people can look great in shorts during offseason workouts but not be up to playing at kickoff.

“I have confidence in both of our quarterbacks. Right now Kerry is our starter, and I’m fine with that,” Bulluck said.

Both quarterbacks worked with the first-team offense Wednesday. Center Kevin Mawae(notes) said he didn’t know of a change and that quarterback switches can produce mixed results. He noted Young taking over for Collins in 2006 when the Titans were 0-3 with the team finishing 8-8 and how Collins replaced Young in 2008 as part of a 10-0 start.

Mawae said team owners can do what they want but he thinks Adams will leave final decisions up to Fisher.

“I know everyone wants a quarterback change because a quarterback change is the one thing that can incite something. But if everybody else is doing their job, including the offensive line and receivers, then everybody looks better, including the quarterback,” Mawae said.

Receiver Justin Gage(notes) indicated he senses a change is coming, while tight end Bo Scaife(notes), who played with Young in college at Texas, said he was not the coach when asked about a change at quarterback. Scaife said he knows Young, the 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year, wants to play.

Is Young, who has more career interceptions (33) than touchdowns (22), ready?

“I hope he’s ready,” Scaife said. “Only Vince knows if he’s ready. He’s been looking good in practice, looked good in training camp. Only Vince knows when he’s ready. Practice is different than the game.”

Notes: RB Javon Ringer(notes) hurt his lower back or hip near the end of practice and was carted off the field before being helped inside the team’s building. Fisher did not have any information on the severity of the injury, though the rookie was in obvious pain. … DB Vincent Fuller(notes) (broken right arm) was not listed on the injury report, and Fisher said he has been cleared to return. CB Nick Harper(notes) (broken right arm) was limited. CB Cortland Finnegan(notes) (right hamstring) did not practice, but Fisher said he could be on the field Thursday.

Hey Snake...So you think Fisher wanted to draft Leinart? Okay. What the he*l is Leinart doing right now. That's what I thought. Toting a da*n clipboard. You also want to know why so many people are sensitive toward Kerry Collins. The reason why is because Collins is not the problem. We, Titans fans, have a bunch of inept receivers that can't catch a football. We have Algie Fumbler which the play on his name sums his a*s up. Lendale White needs to order up a few cases of Patron since he claims to have stopped drinking tequila. It obviously must have helped him cause he certainly hasn't done jack sh*t since he quit drinking it if he in fact did. Collins is under contract through next season. Sounds like they don't have much confidence in the future for VY. He will be out of Tennessee after this season anyway. I say good riddance.

yeah yeah yeah i hear you titan haters out there even tho i know you was riding on the band wagon lasy year saying go titans. well im a true fan that dont jump ships when the going gettes though i stick it out. because i know not every team is going to be the 72 miami dolphins. look first off we need to fire fisher because we have only been to the the superbowl once since he has been oour coach so he sucks he always picks the same play. next we need to let vy go so that we can get a much better qb in this years draft. then we need a star wideout that can actually caught the ball most of the time. then we need to work on our secondary.. then we would have the haters off our nuts.

The owner says start him, then you start him... period!

As the guys who pays the bills and employs hundreds of people, then he should have the final say so.

When I tell one my NFL fan employees to flip that burger then, by god, he better flip that burger or I'll hire another NFL fan guy... period!

The franchise is cursed by a bad owner. Who fires good coaches and alienates fans. He betrayed Oiler fans by moving them to Tennessee. The Oilers won the first AFL championship so they have done something.

And no way are the steelers the greatest franchise in sports history the Yankees own that award since they dominated their sport even during it's golden age. In football an argument could be made for the Cowboys or Packers. However the steelers are the champs so they've earned the right to be called the best.

The funny thing is that if they start Vince Young of Kerry Collins, Collins could leave after this year and probably get a starting job on some of the lower level teams. How much do you think that Tampa Bay or Miami would've liked to have Kerry Collins.

Let's face it, no QB is going to look good when his receivers have bricks for hands.

Why not start Young, you heve nothing to lose, the season is pretty much over. Should not have stomped on the towel,it's bad luck............

Can't agree more, maybe there is a curse associated with disrespecting the greatest franchise in the history of the NFL and possibly all sports. The Titans have not won a game since they beat the Steelers in week 16 last season losing 8 straight since that happened. Moral of the story: don't disrespect a franchise with 6 Lombardi Trophies when your own franchise has done basically nothing in its existence.

fish wanted Leinart not cutler. I don't care who the back-up is. It's time to pull collins. Why so many people are touchy over collins is beyond me. I knew when he was resigned we were gonna lose. It's like people have something against VY. At worst he sucks, we're already there. They should of got a different qb in the off season. collins for 14 mill is a joke.

Hey #30-Tim...It is good to see someone else here on this thread that has good football sense. I was at the Colts game a couple of years ago when VY showed his true abilities by choking on a potential game winning drive. This is just one example of his lack of big-time NFL skills. I won't be at LP Field this Sunday due to a prior commitment but I will be there when the Bills come to town on the 15th. I think you know as well as I do that Fisher wanted to draft Jay Cutler. Also Tim, we both know that the Titans are not going to take the cap hit on VY at the end of this season. So, the only option is to release him. Hey VY. Good riddance.

If you draft a running quarterback that is just what you get. Never seen one who has won the Super Bowl yet, Steve Young is as close as you get, but he could throw the ball pretty damn good too. I have to laugh at the "slash and dash" POS who said he didn't want any part of it anymore. Look what you got now you f!@#'n idiot!!!

Maybe the Titans need to check their future. Now they got some Booty, lol! If this is it for Kerry Collins, at least he can keep trying his hand at writing country songs, maybe get some tips from John Rich. Why not try Young? Hey, it's possible the Titans could go 10 and 6. Note, I said possible, not probable.

(Smike): your wrong..no one was predicting the Titans to be good last year all i heard from people and ESPN was Titans 8-8 (come close to wild card)...Colts win division(easy)...but they were wrong and you are wrong.....now to the Collins situation...it does not matter if Vince is not the answer...the season is over for the Titans,,,no reason in this world you need to keep playing a washed up (old man favre) QB and keep losing....if your goin to lose then lose with young players that are exciting......tired of seeing Collins acting like he is in a wheel chair in the pocket...start Vince

the owner wants to see vince young to start, put him in and let him fail. can't blame collin's if the whole team has quit. everyone was pickin titans to be soooo good after last year. they had soft schedule last year. i would like to see jeff fischer get away from there anyway, he's too good of a coach to be down there with those losers!

Vince Russell, I mean Young, is a basket case, and is not NFL material. Fisher would have made him the starter much earlier if this was not the case. He will be helping Texas in their recruiting very soon.

Plugging in a neurotic and depressed QB to start for an 0 and 7 team with no chance to make the playoffs is going to do what? 13-3 last season was a fluke. Stupid Titans the NFL is for good teams.

Such suspense. The owner wants Young. Wonder who Fisher will pick? More interesting will be how he makes it sound like it was a decision he made without being influenced.

I know as well as everyone else that VY is going to start Sunday. I am glad for one reason and one reason only. That being the fact that I am tired of all the negative talk about Kerry Collins. Vince Young will show everyone why he will never be a successful NFL quarterback. I don't dislike VY. I am just calling a spade a spade.(no pun intended) I have had the opportunity to see VY play on many occasions and he simply does not impress me. He had what it took to be successful in the NCAA against a bunch of fellow 18-20 year olds. But this is the NFL. The worst player on an NFL team is a helluva football player or he would not be on the roster in the first place. I am a die-hard Titans fan but I say this to you VY. Enjoy the rest of the season because your days are numbered here in Tennessee my friend.
