Young the runner now bigger threat through air

  • Print

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—The maturity of Vince Young(notes) as a quarterback was never clearer than last Sunday.

Young stood behind his offensive line, flicking passes to receivers while driving the Titans 99 yards in the final 2 minutes, 37 seconds. He tossed one ball out of the end zone to avoid a mistake, then had to explain a play not run by Tennessee since his rookie season to his teammates. That play resulted in the winning touchdown.

Everyone knew Young could run, throw and win.

Now the Tennessee quarterback who has revived his career with the team that drafted him No. 3 overall in 2006 is showing he’s also learned how to be more potent as a pocket passer. He is coming off his best passing game as a professional, and his 387 yards are the most for this franchise in five years.

Young is paying attention. And not paying attention: One of the many lessons he’s learned during his 14 months on the bench is to tune out the TV and radio commentators and newspaper columnists.

“I just try to stay focused and continue to come to work every day and continue to get better and better,” Young said.

How much better can Young be?

“I’m still working, still working, still working,” he said. “This is my fourth year. I got a long way to go.”

Young’s development comes just in time. His $14.25 million salary cap number for 2010 is why owner Bud Adams wanted him starting after the Titans began 0-6. Is the quarterback worth keeping around after this season, Adams wanted to know? Indeed, being released and joining a long lists of busts such as Ryan Leaf and Akili Smith seemed his fate only two months ago.

Now, Young has led the Titans to five straight wins after that woeful start, the only team in NFL history to go from 0-6 to 5-6.

The 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year always called his legs his best weapon even though he can toss balls 60 yards downfield with a flick of his wrist.

He hadn’t won a game with his arm in this turnaround until last week’s 20-17 victory over Arizona, and what a day he had. Young threw 43 passes and completed 27—both career highs—and was 9 of 16 for 94 yards on that final drive.

Up next is a showdown Sunday with three-time MVP Peyton Manning(notes), the gold standard for quarterbacks in the NFL. Manning has noticed what Young’s done with his second chance.

“Obviously, he had to sit and sit and sit, and then to come back in and play the way he’s done, it’s been very impressive. Our defense knows all the difficult challenges he provides with his legs as well as his arm. It’s almost like a different offense for our defense,” Manning said.

Young will be going for a 10th straight win as a starter in Indianapolis, and he already is 23-11 as a starter for a 67.6 winning percentage. That ranks him fourth behind Tom Brady(notes) (77.7 percent), Ben Roethlisberger(notes) (70.4 percent) and Philip Rivers(notes) (69.5 percent) for best winning percentage among quarterbacks drafted since 2000.

For the season, Young doesn’t appear among the AFC’s passing leaders because he hasn’t thrown enough times. Over the past five weeks, he ranks sixth with a passer rating of 96.9. That also puts him ahead of Manning.

In this stretch, Young is 83 of 127 for 1,010 yards, and he has been putting balls squarely into his receivers’ hands. He’s completing 62.9 percent and his overall passer rating of 90.2 would be the highest yet for his career.

His teammates say Young is much more poised and comfortable in the huddle, never more so than on that decisive drive when he completed passes to five different receivers.

Nate Washington(notes) won a Super Bowl with Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh and said he knew Roethlisberger would make a key play. He called Young different.

“Whatever he does is major. It’s on a major level. It’s on a whole different stage. It’s like, I don’t know, it’s unexplainable. It just feels good to be with a guy who knows we have to win games, and he’s going to do whatever he has to do to win games,” Washington said.

Young explains his success by saying he learned patience sitting on the bench. He studied how Kerry Collins(notes) refused to risk a mistake by forcing a throw, and he worked hard with quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson.

Heimerdinger wants to watch Young the rest of this season before assessing him as a pocket passer. But the coordinator who only worked with him through three quarters of the 2008 season opener before Young was injured has been learning what plays Young likes and fit his quarterback.

Heimerdinger helped Young’s mentor, the late Steve McNair(notes), become co-MVP with Manning in 2003. To him, the biggest difference is how hard Young is working off the field.

“There’s times on Wednesday I put in ideas or new schemes, and they get wordy and even I have trouble calling them off the sheet of paper. Then he comes back on Thursday, and he has practiced saying it. He’s got it down cold. He calls it right, so I know he’s going home at night and doing something,” Heimerdinger said.

Young remains the NFL quarterback who has rushed for the most yards since 2006. He ran for a season-high 73 yards to beat Houston 20-17 on Nov. 23.

Colts defensive lineman Raheem Brock(notes) notes Young is playing pretty well.

“And we know we have to get after him up front. He makes plays with his arm and his legs, so we’re going to have to chase him,” Brock said.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher said Young keeps doing something unique each week. The man who said Oct. 29 he would’ve stuck with Collins at starter if Tennessee had at least a couple of victories insists he isn’t surprised by Young’s play.

“I’m proud of the production, and the results,” Fisher said.

It’s tough not to be at this point.

People can he do this can he do that face it for those who hate VY say you just don't like him but everyweek I see excuses on this and that like I said before he can play in this league he's proved that the biggest thing is people say he quit to me he just proved that he was'nt a quitter this is the guy. He bounced back after last year thats the mark of a strong person he could have listen to yall and just said for get it but no he is back and showing what he can do. I don't want Mr.Perfect. I want a QB thats been ruffed a lil and see how he comes back but some of you still rather see the titans lose with young than win. Those who feel this way is a hater don't deny it accept it. He could lead this team to a superbowl and there will still be yeah but and anyone talking about getting rid of him please tell me who would we get? if we draft a rookie he's still got to learn and if we pick up a free agent then well who?

Wow lashley if that were the case then we wouldn't have gone 13-3 last season. Why would the receivers all the sudden want to drop the ball after a season like that? Could it be that the entire team was in a funk and that Collins might be getting a little old, I mean he is 39 one year shy of Brett Favre but lets face it he's no Brett Favre. I don't think the team quit on him. I mean to be honest this year is a lot like last year in the sense that we change quarterbacks and now things are excellent. I'm a huge VY fan but I think they made the right move last year regarding Young. How perfect was that, the fact that we were winning with Collins while Young got to watch how a vet plays the game? Now we see that it paid off. We've seen all season people making qb changes but when it comes to VY no one wants to see him succeed. I'm proud to be a Titans/Oilers fan because with every week we break some sort of records. No team has gone 5-0 after an 0-6 start....EVER! If your ashamed of that then your perspective is all jacked up. If anything you would be ashamed to be a Titans/Oilers fan after that butt whoopin in New England. That's what I felt then but now I couldn't be happier....just like last season-when Collins was under center.

okay for anyone that has actually watched a titans game this year lets go back and take a look at why kerry collins struggled so badly(by the way jake delhomme and jay cutler have done way worse than he did). in one game on consecutive plays I watched nate washington drop a pass that was dead center in his chest with nobody within ten yards of him, chris johnson drop a pass in the flat that was dead center in his chest with nobody within five yards of him and on the one contested pass washington alloweed it to be intercepted. those kinds of plays were typical of when collins was in. im not saying collins was perfect because he wasnt, im saying that his own teammates quit on him which is exactly what vince young did last year. as far as im concerned, until young prvoes he wont quit when the going gets tough, i wont trust him and dont trust mos of this team at this point because they cired their way to getting a man who quit on them once into the starting job. I have been a titans fan since they were the houston oilers, and I have to say this is the first year I have been ashamed of being a fan. I will not quit on this team however and if vince should prove to be the one, thats great. I just feel that collins caught a raw deal and unfortunately he has his own teammated to thank for that.

My family are die-never Texas Longhorn fans. My husband and I are both alumnus. Vince Young is a football legend to every Longhorn fan everywhere. When he walked onto the field you believed that the Horns would win every time. I have no respect for a bunch of Monday morning quarterback Titan fans who would boo him off the field. If those fans saw him play in college week after week like we did, they would understand that he left every thing in himself on the field every week. Nobody like that would be able to handle that kind of treatment. That is the trouble with pro football fans and why I can't be bothered to watch it anymore. The fans, the owners, I have no respect for. It's just a business, end of story. College football still has a heart and a soul at a most schools.

You can't argue with racism. Black QBs have won super bowls, in countless pro bowls, have a less success/bust ratio than whites, have 10 year tenures on one team, hall of famers, passed for near 50,000 yards in a season, averaged 100 qb rating in a season, super bowl appearances, 200 career touch down passes, the list for what makes a successful QB has been done and will continue to be done, have higher career win percentages than troy aikmen, phil sims, dan marino, yet still people say they can't play. Most of these people who say blacks can't play are half educated. The black QB excuse is the same excuse racists used to say about black pitchers, boxers, track stars, presidents etc etc etc etc. Given time the truth comes out.

I'm waiting for their excuses of why Vince Young won and Collins couldn't. Collins had six chances against a the same Jags team and FAILED plus five other chances. Before the racists all claimed Young was was going to lose the game because if Collins couldn't win for the titans, SURELY a black Vince Young couldn't. I am not saying Vince Young is a great QB , I actually think he has a lot to learn, but the racists can't see beyond their biggoted views and when their team starts losing, their true "colors" come out. I just like to see their ignorance come back and bite them in the @#$%. NOw back to football. Titans will probably lose the next 6 games, but it sure won't be Vince Young's fault, and if he loses the next 5 games, he will still have done better than Collins the great mighty white QB 0-6.

Gee, I wonder why Christ Johnson picked this game to run for 200 yards? Maybe he's racist against white QBs? LOL. The jags must be racist too, they let the titans beat them because they had a black QB this time. Duhhhh.

I'm not saying Vince Young is a great QB, but I am saying that the racists here have EXTREME bias towards Kerry Collins, and look for any excuse to point out a black QB's "mental capacity" to play QB. Collins, 0 - 6 against the same Jags team and no win. To be fair and unbiased Compare the next 5 games that Vince Young has against the last 6 of Collins (0 - 6)... you'll have a much better idea who the better QB is. Judging from:

    0 - 6 start
    62.0 QB rating
    54.8% completion
    178.5 yards per game
    5 tds vs 8 int

I would say its Collins that doesn't have "the mental capacity" to play QB. If Vince Young loses next week, SO WHAT, he already surpassed Collins in one game. I'd be more worried about Vince Young's mental state then his ability to play QB. Racists are cool :) You Titans are hosed for the season anyway because of Collins. Good luck next year.

Hey Mike C, the KKK clansmen, I'd like to add to your list of exceptions with of McNabb and Warren Moon. What about Mcnair who co mvp'd with manning and averaged 100+ qb rating for the year? What about Doug williams, Super Bowl 22 MVP. How about randall cunning who throw for more yards, more tds, less ints and a better win rating than Troy Aikmen. Besides being Hall of Famers, super bowl winners and league record breakers, the common denominator for these 5 men. Racist were saying the same thing about them "Just like all the other teams that tried a black QB, It won't work.....They can't think on the run ,start to panic and want to run". These comments were similar for early black pitchers, track stars, boxers, singers, professors.... even presidents. If you're racist and you know it, clap your hands.

06 rookie year vince was great not because of stats you stat idiots kill me that don't meen crap what makes vy good is the ability to get outside the pocket thats bigger than any stat a good run game qb or running back is lethal and in 06 vy made plays thats why he almost led us to the playoffs. so this is to the guy talking about his play be suspect in 06 your wrong and lying to yourself we were 0-3 that year when vy came in and we racked up wins he's never passed for big yards and threw a bunch of td's but he is a threat you have to game plan different when playing against him stat idiots please look at the games stop looking at 300 yard passing yards as a meens for a win ask breeze had good stats but did'nt make the playoffs. Vy can have bad stats and lead a team Collins can't ! everything has to be insinc for Collins VY why is good when plays break down.

Vince Young is a fruit ball. You paid this nut job all that money so let him play and show that all that nut ball therapy from last year was a big waste of money. All this moron has done his whole life is play football, everrything else was done by other people, in the shadows, and now that it is time to man up, HE CRIES LIKE A BABY.

I met Vince Young and Bo Scaife at Baptist hospital while I was recovering from surgery. I told him about how all i've been hearing is how he's done and that I thought he was hands down the best quarterback on the team. All he said with a grin was "tell em to just wait and see". The man was focused before Mcnair's death, sure he is using that as motivation, but VY knows what he has to do. It seems like everyone forgets the ability you must have to do what he's done in football his whole life. It's only a game. Quit over analyzing and let the man play. Norm Chow sucked and tried to change VY's style. He has to get used to Heimerdinger's philosophy. He will be fine. Our receiving unit is the type of athleticism he needs to suit his game and stretch the field. Everybody just chill and let them get in sync. They are young except for Kerry Collins which leads me to asking why anyone can really believe he's the savior. He has experience which happens to be the best teacher of all. When has Kerry ever got it done throughout his career? Super Bowl appearances speak volumes, but that wasn't enough for people to call McNair a great quarterback and i'd start McNair over collins if he were alive. Kerry is the starter and he should be, but Vince will be the future Tennessee or Not.

What a bunch of IDIOTS you MORONS are for judging Vince Young like some arm-chair quarterbacks and wannabe psychologists. It's easy to criticize someone who does not meet your lame expectations, but what have ya'll done lately that make you better than Young. Have you won a National Championship in College Football lately. Vince single handedly carried the Longhorns to the Promise Land his last season at Texas, but he did'nt do it his first year as a freshman. It took time to learn from some hard losses before he got to the next level of success. This guy was a success in High School, College, and I guarantee all of you bumbling " NEVER WON @#$% IN YOUR LIFE" fools that he will do great things in the NFL after it's all said and done. Vince is Man who wants to win more than anyone I know in sports. Get off his case and get a life PENDEJOS!!!!!!

Patrick Ramsey didn't throw that pick 6. That was Alex Mortenson, who is no longer on the roster.

And seriously, Vince had some great plays his rookie year, but please don't say he put that team on his shoulders. That is not fair to all of his teammates who made up for his poor play. Think about the 24-21 win over the Jaguars in '06. 3 defensive TD's and a field goal that was set up by a Pacman kick return. VY had some incredible moments like that 4th quarter against the Giants, but I just think that you are lying to yourself if you truly believe that VY can lead a team to the Superbowl.

And in '07 VY's defense and running game drug him to the playoffs. He certainly didn't lead anyone with stat lines like 6/14 for 42 yards with 2 picks like one game that the Titans WON.
