Young: “I grew up a little bit” in time off

  • Print

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—The moment every Titans fan expected finally happened, and they couldn’t wait to see how Vince Young(notes) reacted.

Young had just been intercepted for the first time since returning as Tennessee’s starting quarterback. He walked to the bench. No pouting, no helmet slam. Instead, Young just grabbed a cap and took a seat on the bench before bouncing back with his third straight victory.

So far, it sure looks like all that time as a backup resulted in a more mature—and winning—quarterback.

“I grew up a little bit,” Young said.

The 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year has posted a passer rating of 90.4 or better in three straight games for the first time in his short career, and he is running effectively.

Coincidence or not, the Titans (3-6) are showing signs of life after the 0-6 start prompted owner Bud Adams to insist that coach Jeff Fisher start the quarterback Adams had watched through high school and college in Texas.

Nearly 14 months have passed since Young lost his job following the 2008 season opener, the game in which Young had to be coaxed back onto the field, upset over being booed for a second interception. A few plays later, he sprained his knee.

That was the start of a dramatic week in which Young skipped a scheduled exam, and Fisher wound up calling police to help find Young when the quarterback sped off in his Mercedes with a gun in the car. Young called the incident the result of a worried mother. But veteran Kerry Collins(notes) remained the starter as the Titans started 10-0.

Since then, Young’s sideline behavior has been a hot topic in Nashville.

Fans speculated he stayed busy listening to his iPod when he monitored play calls through an earpiece; measured the distance between Young and Collins when talking with offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger; and even where he sat during games.

Through it all, Fisher insisted Young was the Titans’ franchise quarterback and that the No. 3 overall pick in 2006 was busy learning.

“He’s making the decisions and changing the plays on the line of scrimmage and doing what we expect the quarterback to do,” Fisher said of Young. “The position’s hard enough to play, and he’s playing it well right now. We just have to keep it going.”

Some of Young’s teammates didn’t sound enthusiastic when he returned as the starter, pointing out the big difference between practice and games. Young sounds as if he understands his challenge.

“I put my teammates first, and I’m behind everything else. I want to keep working and impressing them and earning their confidence and respect from them guys,” he said.

Numbers help.

Young is 21-11 in his four NFL seasons, and he can win his eighth straight game as a starter Monday night when the Titans visit his hometown, Houston. In his three starts, he is 44 of 62 for 469 yards with two touchdowns and the lone interception. He has been sacked just once and has run 22 times for 73 yards and another TD.

Houston cornerback Dunta Robinson(notes) said the Titans have eased Young back into the offense, especially with Chris Johnson leading the NFL in rushing.

“When you’ve got a running game that is clicking and working the way that running game is, you shouldn’t have to ask any quarterback to do too much,” Robinson said. “He’s coming in and he’s managing the game pretty well. He’s making the throws he’s supposed to make, and they’re handing the ball off to Chris Johnson, and he’s making the difference.”

Collins had Johnson, too, but Young’s mobility allows him to move around and buy time. Young said he is working hard with Heimerdinger, and the result has been a variety of quarterback draws, scrambles, throwing on the run and even the option.

Young also has organized his private life to focus on work. He used to come in from practice and find his cell phone demanding his attention. This is the quarterback who had a brief reality show his rookie season, talked of how he stayed busy playing Santa, and dived into charity work with his own foundation.

“Now I have all of that structure-wise right. I don’t have to worry about that. All I have to do is play football now,” Young said.

He also had to deal with the murder of his mentor, Steve McNair(notes), in July. Young said at the funeral he would be there for McNair’s sons as the NFL veteran had been there for Young. Trenton and Tyler McNair watched as Young led the 41-17 win last weekend over the Bills.

“My confidence level is a tremendous high,” Young said.

“As I have been sitting back and watching and learning the game of football as a quarterback the things you need to do. That is all I have been doing, just being ready and the preparation is the biggest key right now.”

My family are die-never Texas Longhorn fans. My husband and I are both alumnus. Vince Young is a football legend to every Longhorn fan everywhere. When he walked onto the field you believed that the Horns would win every time. I have no respect for a bunch of Monday morning quarterback Titan fans who would boo him off the field. If those fans saw him play in college week after week like we did, they would understand that he left every thing in himself on the field every week. Nobody like that would be able to handle that kind of treatment. That is the trouble with pro football fans and why I can't be bothered to watch it anymore. The fans, the owners, I have no respect for. It's just a business, end of story. College football still has a heart and a soul at a most schools.

damn i can that there are a lot of haters out in the world. so what vy has made some mistakes in the past and so what he is a srat qb in the nfl. well im sure that everybody else here on yahoo that likes to talk bad about him have made mistakes as well. if you say you havnt then take your hand and slap yourself really hard.. i think since he had time to sit back and learn the game better i same play him for the rest of the season to see how good he does. if he plays well then keep him if not get rid of him. its as simple as that.

You can't argue with racism. Black QBs have won super bowls, in countless pro bowls, have a less success/bust ratio than whites, have 10 year tenures on one team, hall of famers, passed for near 50,000 yards in a season, averaged 100 qb rating in a season, super bowl appearances, 200 career touch down passes, the list for what makes a successful QB has been done and will continue to be done, have higher career win percentages than troy aikmen, phil sims, dan marino, yet still people say they can't play. Most of these people who say blacks can't play are half educated. The black QB excuse is the same excuse racists used to say about black pitchers, boxers, track stars, presidents etc etc etc etc. Given time the truth comes out.

I'm waiting for their excuses of why Vince Young won and Collins couldn't. Collins had six chances against a the same Jags team and FAILED plus five other chances. Before the racists all claimed Young was was going to lose the game because if Collins couldn't win for the titans, SURELY a black Vince Young couldn't. I am not saying Vince Young is a great QB , I actually think he has a lot to learn, but the racists can't see beyond their biggoted views and when their team starts losing, their true "colors" come out. I just like to see their ignorance come back and bite them in the @#$%. NOw back to football. Titans will probably lose the next 6 games, but it sure won't be Vince Young's fault, and if he loses the next 5 games, he will still have done better than Collins the great mighty white QB 0-6.

Gee, I wonder why Christ Johnson picked this game to run for 200 yards? Maybe he's racist against white QBs? LOL. The jags must be racist too, they let the titans beat them because they had a black QB this time. Duhhhh.

I'm not saying Vince Young is a great QB, but I am saying that the racists here have EXTREME bias towards Kerry Collins, and look for any excuse to point out a black QB's "mental capacity" to play QB. Collins, 0 - 6 against the same Jags team and no win. To be fair and unbiased Compare the next 5 games that Vince Young has against the last 6 of Collins (0 - 6)... you'll have a much better idea who the better QB is. Judging from:

    0 - 6 start
    62.0 QB rating
    54.8% completion
    178.5 yards per game
    5 tds vs 8 int

I would say its Collins that doesn't have "the mental capacity" to play QB. If Vince Young loses next week, SO WHAT, he already surpassed Collins in one game. I'd be more worried about Vince Young's mental state then his ability to play QB. Racists are cool :) You Titans are hosed for the season anyway because of Collins. Good luck next year.

Hey Mike C, the KKK clansmen, I'd like to add to your list of exceptions with of McNabb and Warren Moon. What about Mcnair who co mvp'd with manning and averaged 100+ qb rating for the year? What about Doug williams, Super Bowl 22 MVP. How about randall cunning who throw for more yards, more tds, less ints and a better win rating than Troy Aikmen. Besides being Hall of Famers, super bowl winners and league record breakers, the common denominator for these 5 men. Racist were saying the same thing about them "Just like all the other teams that tried a black QB, It won't work.....They can't think on the run ,start to panic and want to run". These comments were similar for early black pitchers, track stars, boxers, singers, professors.... even presidents. If you're racist and you know it, clap your hands.

Opinions are like buttholes.......everybody has one. I laugh when I read these idiotic comments. VY might or might not make it in the NFL but he definately has some of the tools to make it. He will never be a Payton Manning or a Drew Brees but he will win games. That is all that matters.

06 rookie year vince was great not because of stats you stat idiots kill me that don't meen crap what makes vy good is the ability to get outside the pocket thats bigger than any stat a good run game qb or running back is lethal and in 06 vy made plays thats why he almost led us to the playoffs. so this is to the guy talking about his play be suspect in 06 your wrong and lying to yourself we were 0-3 that year when vy came in and we racked up wins he's never passed for big yards and threw a bunch of td's but he is a threat you have to game plan different when playing against him stat idiots please look at the games stop looking at 300 yard passing yards as a meens for a win ask breeze had good stats but did'nt make the playoffs. Vy can have bad stats and lead a team Collins can't ! everything has to be insinc for Collins VY why is good when plays break down.

Vince Young is a fruit ball. You paid this nut job all that money so let him play and show that all that nut ball therapy from last year was a big waste of money. All this moron has done his whole life is play football, everrything else was done by other people, in the shadows, and now that it is time to man up, HE CRIES LIKE A BABY.

I met Vince Young and Bo Scaife at Baptist hospital while I was recovering from surgery. I told him about how all i've been hearing is how he's done and that I thought he was hands down the best quarterback on the team. All he said with a grin was "tell em to just wait and see". The man was focused before Mcnair's death, sure he is using that as motivation, but VY knows what he has to do. It seems like everyone forgets the ability you must have to do what he's done in football his whole life. It's only a game. Quit over analyzing and let the man play. Norm Chow sucked and tried to change VY's style. He has to get used to Heimerdinger's philosophy. He will be fine. Our receiving unit is the type of athleticism he needs to suit his game and stretch the field. Everybody just chill and let them get in sync. They are young except for Kerry Collins which leads me to asking why anyone can really believe he's the savior. He has experience which happens to be the best teacher of all. When has Kerry ever got it done throughout his career? Super Bowl appearances speak volumes, but that wasn't enough for people to call McNair a great quarterback and i'd start McNair over collins if he were alive. Kerry is the starter and he should be, but Vince will be the future Tennessee or Not.

What a bunch of IDIOTS you MORONS are for judging Vince Young like some arm-chair quarterbacks and wannabe psychologists. It's easy to criticize someone who does not meet your lame expectations, but what have ya'll done lately that make you better than Young. Have you won a National Championship in College Football lately. Vince single handedly carried the Longhorns to the Promise Land his last season at Texas, but he did'nt do it his first year as a freshman. It took time to learn from some hard losses before he got to the next level of success. This guy was a success in High School, College, and I guarantee all of you bumbling " NEVER WON @#$% IN YOUR LIFE" fools that he will do great things in the NFL after it's all said and done. Vince is Man who wants to win more than anyone I know in sports. Get off his case and get a life PENDEJOS!!!!!!

Patrick Ramsey didn't throw that pick 6. That was Alex Mortenson, who is no longer on the roster.

And seriously, Vince had some great plays his rookie year, but please don't say he put that team on his shoulders. That is not fair to all of his teammates who made up for his poor play. Think about the 24-21 win over the Jaguars in '06. 3 defensive TD's and a field goal that was set up by a Pacman kick return. VY had some incredible moments like that 4th quarter against the Giants, but I just think that you are lying to yourself if you truly believe that VY can lead a team to the Superbowl.

And in '07 VY's defense and running game drug him to the playoffs. He certainly didn't lead anyone with stat lines like 6/14 for 42 yards with 2 picks like one game that the Titans WON.

you guys talking about football like hey look at the numbers you don't know dick about football drew breeze had good numbers last year and did'nt make the playoffs archie manning had great numbers how many playoffs did he go to. dilfer did'nt have great numbers when they won the superbowl. for the guy talking about young not deserving rookie of the year you could'nt have watched the titans that year no his numbers were not great but he picked that team up on his sholders and damn near got us in the playoffs after Collins sucked it up we all were willing to give kerry another chance and he did well, do the same for young yes everytime he plays he will make a mistake like any other qb and will be bashed. and when he does well it will be down played. funny did'nt ramsey have an int returned for a touchdown or they must have changed because there was no hoop la about it

Love the player at UT. Professionally, his mechanics have been a mess and still are a mess. The Wonderlic intelligence test results may have been a sign to worry back in '06, but looking back at what has transpired since then will probably make teams want to run away from anyone else scoring that low for QB position. Hope he get's it together mentally and emotionally, but if his mechanics do not improve...well he is going to be too high priced to be a number 3 and it seems he understands that now. He is still maturing and never had to deal with people questioning his football skills--got to be a big shock to him emotionally.

Look, the guy's not a good quarterback. It's that simple. The NFL handing him the rookie of the year in 2006 was a joke. His numbers that year were pedestrian at best for an NFL quarterback. The real rookie of the year was N.O. wide reciever Marques Colston.

However, the NFL has become nothing more than a marketing machine. Vince Young jerseys sold, Colston jerseys did not. Therefore, a pedestrian quarterback who had one good college season was given the rookie of the year award.

Vince doesn't have the ability, discipline or intelligence to play quarterback in the NFL. The only people who don't understand it are his old college fans. The Titans will cut him as soon as it becomes economically feasible for them to do so.
