Chris Johnson has sights set on Dickerson’s mark

  • Print

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Tennessee running back Chris Johnson appreciates being named the AFC’s offensive player of the month for November. His goals are set just a bit higher.

He says Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record is within his reach.

Dickerson ran for 2,105 yards in 1984 for the then-Los Angeles Rams. Right now, Johnson is leading the NFL with 1,396 yards with five games remaining. He just finished November with 800 yards rushing for the best month in the league since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970.

That earned him the AFC offensive player for the month Thursday, making him the first player from this franchise to win this award since Steve McNair(notes) for October 2003.

“I’m pleased with that,” Johnson said. “I’m just trying to keep being consistent, keep doing the right thing and continue to keep having good games and hopefully get closer to that record.”

Consistency has not been a problem for the second-year back out of East Carolina.

He currently is on pace for 2,030 yards having averaged 126.9 yards per game this season. He has rushed for at least 125 yards in six straight games, tying the NFL record set by Dickerson and fellow Hall of Famer Earl Campbell (1980). Dickerson tied Campbell in his record-setting season in 1984.

Johnson already has made NFL history by becoming the first player to average 5 yards or better per carry in each of those six games. Jim Brown did that in five games in 1958.

He has talked about 2,000 yards being a goal of his this season. Jamal Lewis(notes) was the last to hit that number in 2003 when he fell short of Dickerson’s mark and finished with 2,066 yards rushing. It’s an elite and short group to reach 2,000 that features Barry Sanders, O.J. Simpson, Dickerson and Terrell Davis with Lewis.

“I feel like I can get it,” Johnson said of 2,000.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher knows Johnson is setting his sets high when asked about the running back pushing himself by setting his goals.

“I know first and foremost he wants to try to win this ballgame, that’s the most important. Anything else that comes off of that is good,” Fisher said.

Johnson has some extra motivation Sunday when the Titans (5-6) visit Indianapolis (11-0).

The Colts held him to a season-low 34 yards on nine carries Oct. 11 in a 31-9 loss. Teammate LenDale White(notes) split the work with him in that game, getting 10 carries for 51 yards. Johnson credits the Colts for a good job defending him but notes the Titans had to turn to the pass after falling behind.

“I just feel this game, if we can stay close, I’ll have more carries,” he said.

This will be Johnson’s first game at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Titans sat him last December rather than risk an injury to the rookie in the regular season finale with Tennessee already having clinched the AFC’s No. 1 seed. He walked on the artificial surface to the sideline but can’t wait to try running the ball Sunday.

“Every time I’m on a surface like that I’m a little bit faster,” he said.

Johnson’s very fast. He was timed at 4.24 seconds running the 40-yard dash during the 2008 NFL Combine at the old RCA Dome. He heard through a friend earlier this week that Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo wanted to race him, and he accepted on his Twitter account.

The running back said he had to go public with Rondo’s comments.

“When you’re the fastest guy ever, that’s what kind of things you get. Everyone wants to race you. Everybody wants to take out the big dog,” Johnson said.

    OK, here's the deal:

The Titans are a very good team but not a great team. They have a good defense. They have a good quarterback (Vince) who is clearly showing promise for the future. They have a great running back (CJ) who is rivaled by, maybe, 2 others in the entire NFL. They have a great kicker in Bironas. They have a good coach in Fischer. Anyone who says that the Titans suck is obviously ignorant. Anyone who says that the Titans are great is ignorant. They are pretty good and have potential. End of story.

I don't know what the people posting on here are smoking but it must be f*@king up your brains. The Titans are not playing the Jets AGAIN this year (yes they already played this year). The Jets only won because of 2 special teams fumbles that both lead to TDs. The Titans are playing the 49ers in SF and I will be there with my VY jersey and I don't care about all the haters!! 49ers are on a 3 game losing streak and 2 of their best players just got injured (Staley and Clements). This is a must win game for them at 3-4 and the Titans have some confidence after the decent win over the Jaguars. I think it will be a close game whoever wins. If CJ gets big yards and VY is turnover free I see a Titans victory!!

I'm happy to see my fellow ECU people doing good in the league. They are getting paid to play a sport and it is entertainment. Stop assuming everyone is from the hood just because they celebrated. I've seen Brett Favre and everyone else celebrate but when it comes to him, its just his joy and love for the game. People grow up and quit being so small minded!!! Good job Chris Johnson!!!

Well, Mojito, the Jets D backed up what they said (sort of). They came and played well against the Pats. Can they keep it up, yes. Will they? Who knows, but at this point I don't see why not. Their blitz packages looked great and clearly made Brady and Pats look bad. Sanchez looked pretty good, nothing amazing but solid, and if that defense keeps playing like that, well that is all they need for Sanchez to do.

The Jets running game looked weak against the Pats, but who cares the won. Now we get to see if the Jets D can play the run as well as the pass. The Titans have their backs against the wall and will come hard to get their first win. It should be a good hard fought battle.

#51 So your Titan's went 13-3 last year. What it get ya...A seat infront of your TV watching Pittsburgh win it all...Pittsburgh was 15-1 in 2004, what it get them...A seat infront of the TV just like you last year...What do I know??? I'm just a guy born and raised in Pittsburgh admiring Pittsburgh's 6 SuperBowl wins...I do like most of the teams. I do like the Titan's, even though they did beat us good the end of last year. Sunday should be a really good game. I think the Titans will win because they need it worse. The Titans know the Colts are 2 up on them already. Are Tenn. D line still rotating 8 or not. Wheres the pass rush. Haynesworth ain't missed that bad is he? I'm not trying to be a smartass there, just asking. Jets are riding the cloud right now. They better enjoy it because it doesn't last forever. Still a lot of season left. Be aware Jets I'm sure Brady, Bil, and the rest of the Pats can't wait for the rematch, so don't get too high. I like all the talk coming out of the Jets the last couple of weeks. Reminds me of when us Steeler fans had Peeze Joey Porter still one of my favorites of all time. I wish we still had that talk in Pittsburgh. I like hearing the trash talk around the league.

The best record in the NFL means precisely squat. Ask the Patriots. Titans didn't even get the opportunity to lose the superbowl.

Willie P is gonna leave tracks on this selfish punk. He's doing sprints all summer, not planning celebrations.

CJ (both of them) is a joke

Congratulations to all the Jets fans and thankyou for beating those Patriots, but you sorry losers crossed the line when I read all this hate you have for my Titans and Chris Johnson. We are one of the classiest teams in the league and we do have one of the best reputations in the NFL. You guys are just jealous because Leon Washington is just not a Chris Johnson. Brett Favre left you guys and your hoping for anything positive right now to be happy about. It all comes to an end this Sunday.
