Grossman out 4-5 weeks

  • Print

HOUSTON (AP)—Houston’s Rex Grossman(notes) is expected to miss about a month with a hamstring injury and the Texans are looking to sign another quarterback to fill in until he’s healthy.

Grossman, Houston’s third quarterback and the former Bears starter, was injured in Saturday’s win over the Chiefs and coach Gary Kubiak says he doesn’t feel comfortable finishing the preseason with only Matt Schaub(notes) and backup Dan Orlovsky(notes).

Kubiak says the Texans could bring back Alex Brink(notes), who was with the team last season.

Also injured Saturday were safety Troy Nolan(notes), a rookie seventh-round pick, who will have surgery to repair a broken hand on Monday and fullback Boomer Grigsby(notes) who is expected to be out six weeks with a high ankle sprain.

Rex Grossman injured? This is new, he has "always" been healthy...
As a Gator fan, I knew Grossman wasn't ideal for the pro's, he makes poor decisions and is fragile. The Bears would have fared better in the superbowl against the Colts with Orton.

ya know, I am a HUGE Bears fan. not even sure why i am on here.(was reading about grossman's injury). Gunbuny, I could read what you write all day long. is about time i found posts that consist of facts and not the normal "my team is better than yours, you guys suck," and so on and so on. Thanks for reminding me of the good old days when people knew how to use, and why these areas for discussion are here!

Kelly how do you figure the Bears are better off than the Texans? You may have a better QB, but your best WR is a failed DB and your offense is too conservative and will never make use of his talents. You have a very gifted RB, but no OL, your best D-lineman hasn't been healthy for an entire season since his rookie season. and they have decided to take away their own best play-maker by not letting him return kicks anymore. My team has a gifted QB, pro bowl WR and TE, the defense is improving, my team's best D-lineman still plays like he's bothered that 'experts' thought he shouldn't have been picked before Reggie Bush. your teams only obvious advantage is the Lb corps. Also the Cover 2 defense is no longing confusing and hard to pick apart.

Yes you have been to the play-offs and SB while the Texans have not, but you would have been blown out of that SB if not for your only play-maker (that pesky kick returner) Since that SB loss, your team hasn't done anything. Forte may be better than Slaton, but at the end of the day, we spent a 4th round pick on our featured back, not a 2nd rd pick. Sorry, you actually spent a 1st and a 2nd rounder trying to find that featured running back or have Bears fans learned to forget traumatic experiences like using the 4th pick overall on Cedrick Benson. I know the Texans haven't done much in their brief existence, but I was consoled by one thing while watching all those bad teams: I knew my owners would hire the best guy to lead the franchise to winning, not the cheapest, and Bob McNair is dedicated to winning. Once my team's owner figured out he needed to make changes, he made them. He didn't wait until their contracts were nearly up before he fired incompetent people. Grossman is better off in Houston because the coaches there are good at making quarterbacks reach their potential or at least play well. Kubiak DID get Jake Plummer to quit making moronic decisions with the football and the game on the line. Plummer's career resumed its tailspin AFTER Kubiak took the job in Houston. My head coach actually has 3 SB rings as an assistant and I am confident he will get one as a head coach. I seem to recall that the Bears have NEVER beaten my Texans in a game that counted. In fact, the only teams in the NFC North Houston hasn't dominated are the Vikings(0-2) and the Packers (1-1). I honestly have a feeling my team will be celebrating a SB win long before yours will be.

Ok GunBunny we get you hate the Bears but they have been to the SB and playoffs during the last 7 seasons while your beloved Texans have yet to even play in one. While the Bears may not have drafted the best thru the 1st round the last few years they still are better off than the Texans.

BTW Gatorsrule the Bears got not-so-great running backs??? The Bears drafted a guy last year who may be the next Gayle Sayers in Matt Forte. That guy is going to be great.I am not in anyway knocking Slaton but most analysts will tell you Forte is the better back for his all around game than Slaton right now.

Ok I am a FORMER Bears fan since childhood who got smart and became a Texans fan in 2002. The reason I got smart and gave away all my Bears junk: CADE MCNOWN. I was so irate they traded down to get the 2nd largest draft bust after Leaf eventhough they had a chance to draft Dante Culpepper but they let their divisional rival grab him. The Bears are more pathetic than the Lions. At least the Lions will fire an incompetent head coach eventually. (Dick Jauron, and Dave Wannestedt) The Lions also don't announce the hiring of a new head coach BEFORE they actually sign him to a contract. (Dave McGinnis) the Bears have drafted so poorly for so long, that Urlacher was the first top pick to actually survive his initial contract in several years. I actually felt glad for Grossman when he escaped. I actually thought Cutler should have been put on a suicide watch when he was told he was traded to a team who's best play-maker is the kick-returner . Somebody must not have told Cutler that his new team's best wide receiver was drafted as a cornerback. Frankly, the football fans of Chicago should evict the Bears and ask the Bidwills to come back. Oh wait, that would only have worked BEFORE the Cardinals got a NEW stadium, not one with a facelift. I actually pity Lovie Smith, no one ever asks Emeril to make a masterpiece out of manure, but the McCaskeys ask EXACTLY that every year of Lovie.

People obviously haven't really watched as closely as Chicago Bears fans have done. Rex Grossman has the arm to be a good qb. But he doesn't have any common sense. He would not throw the ball to the open receiver. For you guys that think he never had a good line; you are crazy to think an oline with 3 pro bowlers on it isn't good. Rex Grossman would sit in the pocket and not throw the ball away if he didn't see anything. He always tried to force the ball into double coverage. Before he hikes the ball he doesn't call an audible or try to change the protection. He would let an obvious blitz come and then throw it to up in the air if he remembers the blitz. Chicago didn't have great receiver corps; but they did have a running game, a defense and tight ends. Don't people remember who has had a top 10 defense for many years. THomas Jones was apart of the Bears a few years ago and wasthere for 3 years rushing for 1,000 each time. Before that Anthony Thomas rushed for 1,000 years for 2 years. THe guy who likes the Texans needs to realize that Matt Forte rushed for more yards than Steve Slaton. Texans have never been all that good. I hope they make it to the playoffs and hopefully turns into a dominate force in the AFC. Rex Grossman sucks and i'm glad he is gone. It really did not work out for him In Chicago

listen, Grossman does have a good arm and had a lot of great games toward the beginning but, he became very inconsistent and probably lost confidence in himself as well. The Bears are never a team to watch QB'S blossom. McMahon was a very smart QB but just could not stay healthy. Eric Kramer had one very good year and Jim Miller when healthy was decent for a couple years. Bottom line is if he is put in the right system with the right coaches, he can succeed as is the case with most QB'S who are not in that small elite group. Matt Cassell is prime example. last year with the Pats, pretty good and got a big contract. this year with the Chiefs he will suck.

We Bears fans always knew Grossman had some raw talent. He had a monster arm and fair mobility. But there were things he would do during a game that would have you throwing your remote at the TV. Throwing off his back foot. Overshooting receivers down the sidelines, throwing behind running backs on a screen. Sure, our receiver corps was never the greatest, but Rex made it harder. He never had "the touch". He never had NFL vision. He was always "almost" there. He would have a QB rating of 105 one week and 32 the next. I have nothing against him personally. I'm not going to call him a "mope" because I certainly couldn't do the things he can do. But be carefull. He will get you all excited and then break your heart.

I'd rank these four backup quarterbacks in the following order: 1/ David Carr, 2/Sage Rosenfels, 3/Dan Orlovsky, 4/ Rex Grossman

So naturally the Texans cut the best one and traded away the next best.

Grossman is a bust. In college it was the system and as Darren R said it the defense carried them to the Super Bowl. When you can set the record for the worst QB rating in the History of the National Football League and still when the game that shows how horrible he is. He is almost just as bad of a bust as Ryan Leaf.

Chicago Bears fans don't know what a good QB is. They think Jim McMahon was actually a good QB. He was a good leader and an average QB. He was always hurt, Grossman looks like Lou Gherig compared to McMahon, Who played QB for the Bears the majority of 1985 except for the playoffs and SB????? Steve Fuller. Rex had the tools but didn't have the line or receivers needed to be successful. The Bears wouldn't have made the SB in '06 if it weren't for Grossman's pass in OT to Rashid Davis against the Seahawks that saved the game for them. It was a 40 yard frozen rope that Favre couldn't have made the same throw. Rex just wasn't a good fit for a team that is so inept in the passing game. Erik Kramer is probably the best QB the Bears have had in the last 20 years, I would put Jim Miller and Rex about the same at 2nd. Orton is terrible and far worse than Rex ever was because he has no physical ability. He has no arm and no ability to throw outside of the pocket. The only reason Rex isn't the backup to Cutler is because the fans have turned on Rex. Orton was sucking @ss against the Lions last year in Chicago and Orton left the game with an ankle sprain and the Bears were behind. Rex came in and saved the game and they named him the starter against the Titans. They expected him to beat the undefeated Titans and he gave it a good fight. The Bears lost 21-14 in Chicago to the Titans and Rex had a fantastic drive and TD pass in the 4th quarter to bring the Bears to within 7. If Orton had played the Bears wouldn't have scored IMHO.
Had Rex beaten the Titans, I don't believe Orton would have started another game in '08 because the Bears would have made the playoffs had they won that game. The Bears were looking for an excuse to go back to Rex, but the fans and the coaching staff gave up on him after the Titans game.
Rex was a class act the entire time he was in Chicago and all of you who say he was worthless can kiss my @ss. He was a decent player who played for team with no idea whatsoever of what a passing game is. Rex will do a good job for the Texans if they give him a chance.

I wish Rex all the best.

ZZ, if not for Sage's great play earlier in that game against the Colts, the Texans wouldn't have been up by 17 with 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter for him to screw it up. You can blame the coaching as much as you can blame Sage for that loss. On the first turnover, how can you fault a QB for giving his heart and soul to get the first down in the heat of battle? I blame the coaches for not reminding him of the situation and having him slide or down the ball and then punt. The next turnover was just a great defensive play but had the coaches been calling running plays to Slaton and trying to run out that last 3 minutes, Sage wouldn't have been in the position to fumble again. You give Manning the ball on the 20 and he is going to get the TD. As for Schlub, he has proven he has the talent and is the guy, the problem is his body which has yet to prove it can last an entire season. I hope that Grossman and Orlvovsky push each other hard so the Texans end up with the best possible backup at QB; they may need it before the season is done. And Andre is the best WR in the league, there is no argument to the contrary.

Fuzzz is right. Rex has more talent then any qb in Houston. Chicago's offensive line sucked and Peyton Manning would not have looked good behind it. A new chance is what Rex needs and he'll prove his worth if given a chance.

Those of you who are constantly down on Rex are idiots who don't understand a thing about football. Even the best qb's in the league would struggle in that Chicago system.
