Steelers will walk thin (defensive) line in Denver

  • Print

PITTSBURGH (AP)—The thin air in Denver isn’t as much of a concern to the Pittsburgh Steelers as their rapidly thinning defensive line.

The Steelers (5-2) already were without defensive end Aaron Smith(notes), a premier run-stopper who is out for the rest of the season with a torn right rotator cuff. Now they’re missing his replacement, Travis Kirschke(notes), who has a torn left calf muscle that could sideline him another couple of weeks. He was injured during a 27-17 victory over Minnesota on Oct. 25.

One of the strengths of a Steelers defense that was the NFL’s best the last two seasons is its depth, but that’s all but vanished now that Smith and Kirschke are hurt. Now, the Steelers must depend on two rookies and a player who was cut last month.

Welcome to the NFL, Ziggy Hood and Sunny Harris. Welcome back, Nick Eason(notes).

Hood, a first-round draft pick, won’t start against the Broncos (6-1) on Monday night but is expected to get significant playing time because teams traditionally rotate linemen in Denver’s high altitude. Eason, a former Broncos draft pick, will move from right defensive end, where he backs up Brett Keisel(notes), to start at left defensive end. Harris is the other backup.

Only a month ago, Eason was let go so the Steelers could activate an extra running back. Suddenly, he is starting on the defense that allows the fewest rushing yards in the NFL.

“I was released the fourth game and the next thing you know I’m playing,” Eason said Wednesday. “Now I’ll be playing a lot more. My snaps have doubled in three weeks. It’s amazing, but that’s the life story in the NFL.”

Harris, a sixth-round draft pick, has a similar story. He was released after training camp only to re-sign two weeks ago after spending time on Carolina’s practice squad.

Because of the injuries, the Steelers must go into one of their biggest games of the season with only one experienced backup defensive lineman in nose tackle Chris Hoke(notes), who plays behind Casey Hampton(notes). Hoke can play defensive end, but it’s likely he’ll get more playing time than usual in the middle as Hampton takes some plays off.

“We go through this every year,” Keisel said. “Last year I was out for a few games and Aaron missed some games (in 2007). We have a lot of guys who know how to play.”

Or at least the Steelers think they know how to play.

Hood, a former star at Missouri, has taken a minimal number of snaps this season. He usually spends his practice weeks on the scout team that replicates the opposing defense.

“He’s a tough guys to block on Wednesdays and Thursdays,” coach Mike Tomlin said. “At some point, he’s going to be a tough guy to block on Sundays. We’ll see when that happens.”

Hood said it’s been a lot to absorb as a rookie, keeping up on the Steelers’ ever-changing defense while also learning a different style each week during practice.

“Each day, I see I’m somewhat getting better, not only mentally but physically as well,” Hood said. “I believe I’ve taken the necessary steps to get better. When the starters need to take a breather, I’ll be able to fill in until they get better and go 100 percent every snap.”

While the Steelers allow an average of 76.6 yards rushing, the Broncos are averaging 123.1, 11th best in the league. Rookie Knowshon Moreno(notes) has run for 420 yards and former Eagles running back Correll Buckhalter(notes) has gained 329 yards and averages 6 yards per carry.

“I’ve told a lot of young guys, ‘The only way you can get prepared to play is to play,”’ Eason said. “You can practice all week, but when you get in a game it’s a different mentality.

“It’s a lot more pressure, there’s the fans, it’s different—it’s 100 miles per hour and it’s full-go tackling. And that’s the only way that guys like Ziggy and Sunny can get playing experience.”

icantmakeyouthink.... did you forget the Steelers had a TD taken from them in 1st quarter against the Viks... Did you know that at the half both BR and BF had each thrown 19 times and had BR not had a few drops the score could of easliy been14 or 21 to 7 at the have.... Do you understand that the Viks may have "DOMINATED" us the entire 4th quater and the only TD they put up was from the Speical Teams.... do you realize that BF throw 51 times and manged only 10 Offensive point all damn day.... Do you understand WHY BF had to throw 51 times that game??? Sorry - Im not much in name calling but WHAT A TARD - they had to throw that much cause AP was SHUT DOWN!!!! let me know the next time ANY QB throws 51 and only manges 330 yrds and 1 TD with an Offense like the Viks have and STILL LOOSE THE GAME...

BTW, everyone know the West Coast Offense is effective agains a 3-4, at least how Lebeau plays it, but if all you Viks fans are going to continue to go back to CALL that every annoucer I heard say that when the legs come out like that then its gonna get called 9 times out of 10 which took points away from the VIks then you have to count the td that was reversed in the 1 quarter so thats the two TD become a wash. Oh wait a min lets not forget trip that was VERY CLEAR done by BF on the second run back - was caught on camera that WASNT CALLED!!

Please - Shut the F Up about the bogus calls - to be honest there should of been a dozen Illegal Procedures calls on the Viks due to what the Center kept doing with his head every snap..... Biggiest offense line in Football and BF was sacked 4 times and it could of been more...... GET OVER IT and learn to see both sides and not call out what benefits your point even if you are misguided or just plain WRONG

That was some great information but you forgot one fact...the most important stat...we got the 'W'

and as for your comment to Crazy Gil...he was referring to Superbowl Rings not just making it to a Superbowl...Cause we're not happy just to make it to a Superbowl we win Superbowls (6-1) as our win/lose record shows.

Stop the hate and kiss the rings b***h

    Go STEELERS

the steelers are true champions. bcuz the true champ wins even when he plays terribly. The steelers offense could only get 1 touchdown against the vikes, but teh mark of the champion was the fact that the offense didnt need to score. the defence was able to cover for them and even get 2 TDs. Broncos havent got that champion mentality or ability.]

Your defense (it's spelled with an S in the USA) didn't "cover for you", the Vikings moved at will down the field against the Steeler D in the 4th qtr, and the Viking D shut Ben and the offense down, three and out, the entire 4th qtr. Fact.

You were dominated by the Vikings in that game. Only a terribly incorrect "tripping" call that reversed a scored TD late in the 4th qtr by the Vikings won you that game. And still, after you were given a reprieve by the officials and scored a TD by your defense, the Vikings blew past your special team coverage, scored a TD, then stopped Ben cold again, then drove at will down to your goal line, Adrian knocking over your defender like he was a rag doll on his long run....

The Vikings D showed who was boss. Consider yourself very fortunate the calls and breaks (tipped pass on the goal line) went your way. You were DOMINATED.

I hope like heck the Steelers get a chance at Super Bowl # 8: against these same Vikings....

And Ravens fans know they want their thug team to be like the Steelers, been copying their team for many years now, but they lost 3-games last year to the MIGHTY STEELERS (yes, it's embarrassing). You would think they would finally figure it out and win one.. LOL
The Broncos are the 2nd decent team the Steelers face this year (Cinci and Bears were lame losses, but still losses), but the Steelers need better competition to bring up their game.
Sad game last week Broncos, against a not very good Ravens team that lost 3-in-a-row.. LOL

You see, you LOST ONE to the Cowboys, who have been to EIGHT Super Bowls. As in EIGHT, more than 7, less than 9.
