Steelers RB Parker not optimistic about playing

  • Print

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Steelers running back Willie Parker(notes) isn’t optimistic about playing in Detroit.

An injured left big toe kept Parker out of the Steelers’ 38-28 victory over San Diego on Sunday and Rashard Mendenhall(notes) ran for 165 yards and two touchdowns in his place.

With Mendenhall pushing to replace him as the starter, Parker didn’t practice Wednesday because his toe still hasn’t healed.

“I’m a competitor and I want to compete and show the world what I’ve got but, at the same time, I’ve got to be smart about it,” said Parker, who ran for at least 1,200 yards every season from 2005-07. “Right now, I’m not where I need to be.”

When Parker last played in Detroit, his 75-yard touchdown run helped the Steelers beat Seattle 21-10 in the Super Bowl in February 2006.

It doesn't matter how much you all hate the Steelers or what you think of them. The only thing that can truly be said. Is when your team can win 6 Super Bowls then your lame comments will carry some weight until then. Just sit back and pound on your head asking yourself how can you become a fan of one of the greatest team ever?

The reason the boybows R being hated a little more now is because they are having to pay some dues for not living up to all the false hype in the last 8-12 years.

Fast Willie has become Flat Willie.

He will NOT be wearing black and gold in 2010 unless it's with the Saints. He won't be back in a Pittsburgh uniform, that much is for sure. Oft injured, and hasn't produced a lot when healthy. I think if Mendenhall continues to show well, and Redman continues to develop, there's no need to keep him when his contract is up.

Texas Hurricane There are certain teams the sports media R all up in em ( that is their heads up in pillow hole) & its definitly now the STEELERS, U must not pay too much attention to what is said in media. They are alway pumping those certain darlings of em (Dolphins especially when O Tuna came in), what aboud the Redskins, Chargers, it took em about 10 years to work their way out of doz radaz holes. Then before the STEELERS went on that all road wins to the Superbowl they would throw em a small bone once in a whil even though they had the #1D in many catagories, OH! But the Boybows what a worship fest of those sorry munchkins. So watch whats being said and and then make an informed judgment and not just slurp up the spoon feeding they want to give the fans for their own egos. Did I leave out them vikees every year, listen to em wow what a good D now they got Favre and the excellent running back Peterson but as a team will they still keep their purple color from lack on oxygen from choking........

Our current record has nothing to do with it, it's our success over the past few years I'm talking about. Anybody with a brain & a little common sense should know that. Did N.E. make the playoffs last year? no Do I still hate them as much as if they won the S.B.? yes Success breeds haters

I don't hate the steelers, but what kind of comment is that? They are 2-2 and third place in their division last time I checked..

I love all the steelers haters, the more you hate us the better we're doing. So cheers to pittsburgh becoming the most hated franchise in the NFL keep the hate coming. And is anybody really dumb enough to think that holmes catch was actually out of bounds? C'mon now I know you hate the steelers but be logical about it, do you really think you saw something nobody else did? You either need glasses or a new t.v.

Big Bad Bill is Sweet William now! Sorry, couldn't resist. I haven't liked Parker since he came to the Steelers. He's not your typical Steelers back. Small and injury prone. I didn't like Rashard either, but he was very impressive in the last game. The whole offense opened right up. When Parker went down last year Moore did a great job carrying us through to the play offs. He's still better than Parker will ever be. I hope Rashard has another big game this week. We play as well as last week for the rest of the season and #7 is in the bag!

    @116
I've been a life-long Steeler fan and I NEVER thought the Steelers deserved a ring they didn't win (except maybe SB XXX when N. Odonnel sold his soul to Jerry Jones), I think they are pleased with the six that they have earned. so maybe it is you who should get over yourself.

    also @112 Right On!

why is it everybody thinks the refs help the steelers win you apparently dont watch the patriots games if a player on defense gets within a yard of tom brady they throw a flag.so if you want to hate on a team atleast make it on that are proven cheaters like pats and spygate, why hate on a team that just plays hard nosed football.but all i all it dont bother me that much because the people that hate on the steelers dont know @#$% about football..

The Steelers of the 70s did not use the steroids of today that make you bigger, faster and stronger they used the ones that helped you heal faster from injuries as did the rest of the NFL as they weren't illegal.
Plus, many Steelers missed many games back in the day so it's not like it worked al that much.

The Steelers 7-0 in the post season when Parker starts, when he doesn't they are 0-1.
Teams have to respect him and the play action pass when he's on the field so his mere presence contributes to all our recent post season victories.
In 2008 and he still managed to rush for over 781 yds while missing 5 games and he rushed for 146 vs SD in the playoffs and many big first down run in the SB within his 53 yds.
Breaking his leg at the end of 2007 killed our playoff chances.
Anyone who thinks we would have won Super Bowl XLIII had Willie stayed injured is seriouly dellusional.
Melwende Moore is a great 3rd down back and solid runner when the O is speard out on early downs but in traditional run formations he does not gain the respect of opposing Defenses as Parker does.
Willie has proven over the years he can run outside as well as inside.
He looked pretty good vs Chicago and Cincinnati this season when he got his opportuities but we started throwing too much IMO when we were wearing the opposing Defenses down as we did San Deigo.
What if Reshard Mendenhall were to get hurt again either this year or next?
If Parker is healthy in that situation we have a 90 % bettter chance of winning regular and post season games with him than we do with any other RB on the roster.

Willie Parker already a Steelers legend to me!
