Seattle cuts ties with Edgerrin James

  • Print

RENTON, Wash. (AP)—The Edgerrin James(notes) experiment in Seattle is over.

The struggling Seahawks cut ties with James on Tuesday, releasing the backup running back who never provided the pop Seattle hoped to get when it signed the 31-year-old in late August.

James’ release was one of a handful of moves Seattle made two days after a lackluster 38-17 loss that dropped the Seahawks to 2-5. Seattle also released safety C.J. Wallace(notes) and cornerback Travis Fisher(notes).

The two-time NFL rushing champ signed with Seattle near the end of training camp hoping to revitalize a career that fell flat after moving from Indianapolis to Arizona. After getting benched for the first time last season, James provided a spark the Cardinals needed in their run to the Super Bowl. But he was released by Arizona in the offseason, and remained unemployed until the Seahawks came calling. Before his release by the Cardinals, James had one year and $5 million remaining on the four-year, $40 million deal he signed with Arizona before the 2006 season.

James failed to provide the punch Seattle hoped for when it cut T.J. Duckett(notes) to make room for James. He gained just 125 yards on 46 carries with no scores. He averaged just 2.7 yards per carry.

James had a season-high 16 carries for 46 yards in Seattle’s 41-0 win over Jacksonville, but James got double-digit carries in only one other game. Three times he was held to less than 10 yards rushing.

His only accolade in his seven games with the Seahawks was the 17 yards James gained last week at Dallas to pass Marcus Allen for 10th place on the NFL’s all-time rushing leaders list with 12,246 yards.

It has been a difficult year for James. His longtime girlfriend and mother of his four children, Andia Wilson, died April 18 of leukemia. James said he had to sort out his life before he turned his attention back to football and that was why it took until late August before he signed with a team.

Seattle signed receiver Mike Hass(notes), safety Jamar Adams(notes) and cornerback Roy Lewis(notes) from the practice squad to fill the open roster spots. The Seahawks also added running back Devin Moore(notes), and cornerbacks Trae Williams(notes) and DeAngelo Willingham(notes) to fill spots on their practice squad.

When is someone going to point the finger at the strength/conditioning/training staff? There are waaaay too many muscle pull/tear injuries on this team. Seems to be alot more than any other injury report..... Good luck Edgerrin, I'd like to see you behind a healthy line.

Hey #100, your post might make a little more sense with A)CLARITY and B)KNOWING WHAT THE HELL YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!

    1)Mo Morris sucks

2)Branch is not a premier receiver

3)T.J.'s upset because #8 underthrows/misses him routinely like Rick Mirer did Joey Galloway.

4)Hasselbeck is worthless, any chance he had of ever consistently being a top QB died when he overthrew D-Jack on TWO STRAIGHT PLAYS in the SB (no wonder he can't hook up with TJ)

Season ticket holder since 76 huh? Try another 33 years and you might learn something

His best days were when he had the luxury of having Peyton Manning pass to set up the run. With the threat of Manning torching them for yards, defenses have to play soft. This is what Edge lived off of. Wide open lanes and big holes don't happen in Seattle. Shaun Alexander learned that the hard way.

The Only good news here is resigning Moore, great back with great potential, as seen in pre-season. More good news would be FIRE Mora, Knapp and Ruskell. Edge is an awesome person and a RB that still has plenty of game left! The LACK of a good starting backfield has hurt us from day one. Should have kept Mo Morris... No one can run behind a NON COACHED and beat up and uncoordinated offensive line!
I hope Edge goes to a good team that can do something up front to open some holes for the run and has some good coaching... Mora is in WAY over his head and its showing and going to cost us another losing season.. Deion Branch is a premier WR and never gets used, Housh is pissed because Knapp and Mora DO NOT know how to coach, WE HAVE THE TALENT, Hass is still a great QB, someone needs to get them alighned and that is where Mora shows he is NO GOOD, Get a new GM like Holmgren and an interim coach to lift the morale of this great group of players and bring in some wide open offense that knows how to pass, West Coast was a hell of a lot better then this mess. I DO NOT blame the players, IT COMES FROM THE TOP... Mora looked beaten before the game began in Dallas, the players see that...

Sad to see Matt, Branch, Housh and the rest have to put up with this Amateur sub par coaching staff.
We have a GREAT group of pass rushers and don't use them, in the AZ game, AZ lined up 7-8 men on the line and pressured Matt big time, Mora didn't learn from that at all.. We could add Tapp next to L Jackson and REED on the other side and pressure the QB all day long, OH, we need to cover the pass, were getting killed anyhow, why not put the heat on??? Another good job Mora, WAKE UP, let the players play, let Matt make adjustments and his own calls like Favre does, he is a Super Bowl, Pr Bowl QB, he knows the game..

The Seahawks thrive on passing, start going deep more, there SO PREDICTABLE with Knapp's play calls..

Season Ticket holder since 1976... Bring back Patera!!!!

FIRE MORA and KNAPP, WAKE PAUL ALLEN ! ! !

Agree with the guy that says locations like Dallas, Philly, Chicago, and Indy are stupid. More likely to see him end up in a place who actually NEEDS a RB. I'm thinking if Cleveland signs him, possibly an outside chance that they bring him in to KC to back up Charles and then release LJ. If he doesn't end up one of those places though, I'm afraid he's done.

Some of you people are so stupid. Suggestions for him to go to the Eagles? Atlanta? Dallas? And even Baltimore? Are you kidding me? Those teams are good because they already have 2 or in some cases 3 good running backs that the teams like. If he gets signed at all it will be to a team who struggles to run the ball and where if he started he too would struggle. And those of you who want him to go to Indy? He would get like 3-5 carries behind 2 good backs. That sounds like a great career move for him. Oh and to the guy who congratulated on Edge reaching the 10,000 yard mark? Way to do it like 2 years too late man. He is already past 12,000 yards so nice try. So people learn some football before making remarks. His time as a starter is done. He might be a back up at best, but hopefully I won't see him on TV until he gets accepted into the Hall of Fame.

I'd like to see Edge get at lease ONE more chance. I think he's got another year or two left in the tank as a complimentary back. And there are some teams vying for playoff spots that could use Edge in that role.

Maybe Chicago, Baltimore, Green Bay, Atlanta, Dallas, etc. should take a look at bringing him in. His starting days are long gone, but short-yardage and resting your 1RB are perfect for what Edge can provide. Hell, even a trip back to Indianapolis to share time with Addai and Donald Brown makes sense.

    Just a thought.
