Houshmandzadeh: What’s all the fuss?

  • Print

RENTON, Wash. (AP)—No one in Seattle will ever confuse T.J. Houshmandzadeh(notes) with Steve Largent.

The outspoken Houshmandzadeh is “shocked” with the fuss being made in his first Seahawks season over his angry gestures and comments about not getting the ball enough, in a city where people are used to their star receivers being quiet yet ultra productive—like Largent. Seattle’s Hall of Famer was so understated he wouldn’t even spike the ball following any of his 101 career touchdowns.

Declaring “I like myself, man, I really do,” Houshmandzadeh said Friday he’s been hearing all week from those inside and outside Seahawks headquarters, from former teammates in Cincinnati, even from his two daughters at home.

Last weekend in Dallas, he angrily gestured toward Matt Hasselbeck(notes) to throw the ball with more loft immediately after he tried to zing a ball to the tightly guarded receiver near the Cowboys’ goal line in the first quarter.

The discussion between the two players continued at the bench. Both made gestures but did not appear to be arguing so much as explaining themselves.

Then in the third quarter, Houshmandzadeh was seen angrily shouting on the sidelines following the end of another possession in Seattle’s eventual blowout loss.

The day ended with the NFL’s leading receiver the previous three seasons, before he signed a $40 million, five-year contract with Seattle last spring, owning just 35 receptions in seven games— and with Seattle (2-5) absorbing consecutive losses of 20-plus points for the first time since 2001.

“From what he told me, it didn’t affect him, it didn’t bother him,” Houshmandzadeh said of Hasselbeck. “But I guess other people felt otherwise.”

Coach Jim Mora and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp both said they’ve talked to Houshmandzadeh this week, and that all is well.

“Man, I’ve been doing that my whole career. Guys from Cincinnati texted me and told me they were surprised it took me until Game 7 to do it,” Houshmandzadeh said of his stomping and griping.

“Whether I was right or wrong—which, you know, (I was) probably wrong— it was just the competitor in me. I didn’t mean no harm by it. I was just upset by the course of the game, which I would hope everybody is. People express themselves differently, obviously, but it never got this much attention before.

“I’m shocked.”

Houshmandzadeh said he felt compelled to approach his three-time Pro Bowl passer this week and tell Hasselbeck: “Br’, if I’ve got a problem with you I will tell you.’

“That’s just how I am. I don’t send subliminal messages. If I’ve got a problem with Matt, I will tell Matt. And I didn’t have a problem with Matt, at the time. I just wanted the ball. We were losing the game, and it was a big third down. Had we completed it, I would have been fine.”

Monday, Hasselbeck said of Houshmandzadeh’s fire: “That’s kind of his demeanor. There’s no issue there. The issue is, we have to complete more passes.”

Hasselbeck made a point of mentioning he nominated Houshmandzadeh to be the team’s player representative for this season.

Houshmandzadeh sought comfort this week in those who know him best. He talked for an hour on Tuesday with Carson Palmer(notes). Houshmandzadeh said his old Bengals quarterback never had a problem with his antics because Palmer “knew me, knew I was a team guy.”

Wednesday, he commiserated with Bengals receiver and friend Chad Ochocinco(notes).

Asked to assess his season, Houshmandzadeh quickly replied, “Oh, terrible.”

“People lie. Numbers don’t. As of right now, I’m not doing anything. I don’t know why it is like that. … I like myself man, I really do. I feel like I’m always open. And there’s times that I’m not open, and I’m supposed to feel like I’m open.

Yes, Houshmandzadeh thinks he should get the ball on every pass play.

“You watch the tape, you’ll see the same thing I’m seeing,” he said. “That’s why I’m optimistic.

“Hey, there’s games left. I’ve just got to build Matt’s trust and confidence with me.”

This receiver who may be more than the usually staid Seahawks bargained for also had an opinion on his team cutting Edgerrin James(notes), the league’s fading active leading rusher who was hugely popular with his new teammates. The move came Tuesday, two days after Mora told his players if he had to fire guys to turn the season around he would.

“It was a shock what happened, the guys who were released, especially ‘Edge’ because he’s just a good dude, you know what I’m saying?” Houshmandzadeh said. “Teams should just have him in the locker room—even if he can’t play, so they think. Just have him in the locker room because he’s cool. I mean, he’s good for (the) team.

“That’s my opinion, and I think that the opinion of a lot of guys. But we’ve just got to just play.”

#34...He turned down Minnesota before Favre agreed to sign. However, Minnesota was definitely the team with more promise to go deep in the playoffs even with T-Jackson or Rosenfels at the helm. This told me he was all about himself and padding stats to look good. He would rather be on a losing team and look good than be on a winning team with less looks so this arcticle isn't a big shocker to me

Heavystats, Are you really that dense or just like sounding like it. Like you said turned down Minnesota before Favre signed. 2nd the only thing Minnesota had going for them before the Favre signing was AP.
No one could have predicted Favre would have the season he is having with Minnesota. No one could have predicted he would make Sydney Rice look like a superstar. No one could predict Percy Harvin would become a dangerous Kickoff return specialist.

Before the start of the season I betcha any starting receiver in TJ's spot would have picked the Hawks over Minnesota. Especially knowing your QB was Tarvis Jackson vs a healthy Hasselbeck.

"Hasselcrap sucks. Seattle needs to start Mike Teel already!"
Ha! That's a good joke. Especially considering Hasselbeck is usually in the top third of quarterbacks performing every Sunday. And that's with no quality O line to speak of.
I'm from Seattle and I'm happy as hell to see Housh getting fired up. It's not ridiculous T.O. tantrums. It's someone wanting his team to perform and wanting to be a contributor. I'm surprised anyone in this city would have a problem with wanting to be a winner. Maybe too many are just used to mediocrity.

To all of you Seahawks bashing "The Housh" for complaining remember this..... He had a few teams to choose from that were alot better than the Seahawks and he signed with them because they are from his home-state. You have to respect a guy putting his home ahead of championship hopes.

I must say, yall are real creative with these backhanded nicknames.... Hasselcrap... that's pure comedy.

If Seattle could run the ball, protect the quarterback, sustain drives, make big plays, convert 3rd downs...then Hasselback would have more time to throw balls accurately. Don't forget his busted ribs...you think that might affect his accuracy too? I actually like TJ's fire in the belly...he should get more throws. Burleson is good, but he will never be a marquee receiver to build an offense around...TJ is.

I'm reading alot of hot-headed-ranting. Let's be serious here. Burleson has done a good job of trying to relieve T.J of #1 coverage. Where is Carlson? It all boils down to being COMPETITIVE! The way this team is playing, and Hasselbeck not making throws is ridiculous. We have no offensive line to give time to create. I like to see a guy have some fire! T.J. is doing and saying what all us fans would do and say on the bench! This team has many more issues than just a competitive WR who want to create plays. When T.J. gestured to put more touch on the pass, HE WAS RIGHT! Those are throws Hasselbeck made easily in the past. I wonder if the guy can throw a screen pass at this point. I think Hasselbeck has done ALOT to help get this franchise where it is. Sadly though, I see a rebuild in the future. Hopefully we can pull through it quicker than most franchises do. It starts with a quality QB, and we will see what happens.

did he ever think about the fact that he had Ochocinco in Cinci to take pressure off of him?? Now he's the #1 (or supposed to be the #1) and defenses are focusing on him more. Plus, he's no Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Boldin, Marshall, etc, etc, anyway, so quit crying and be happy you are averaging 5 catches a game. You went to the Seahawks TJ, what did you expect anyway??

The man was pissed, and he was right, the ball should have had more touch. Hass has been off the mark all year. The team needs some fire, they needs to make 1st downs, they need to make the catch when it's tough and and the coverage is tight. good for Housh !! We need more guys pissed off when the they dont move the ball. I'm pissed just watching the game.

Don't be too hard on Housh. This team throws millions away on unproductive receivers. Burleson doesn't do much, Branch is too busy cashing checks to catch balls. They let Engram and Hackett leave.

Mr. Allen, find Ron Wolf and open your check book. Ruskell's got to go. Holmgren's gone, so get rid of his girlfriend, Matt. Draft a QB. Mora, throw away Holmgren's playbook and find an identity for this team.

Alot of you are ignorant douche bags. For example: Mr. Common Sense says "Who gives a rats ass about seattle" My question to you is why the heck are you reading the article and posting a comment you shmuck. Same for all you other haters. Worry about you own damn team morons. Oh and by the way the only reason Seattle is 2-3 is because Hasselbeck has only played 2 whole games and they won both very easily. It's obvious most of you don't pay attention. Oh and by the way I guarentee the Vikings won't win a damn thing. They have zero chance of winning the Super Bowl.

Here is yet another uneducated jock. I mean really, can any of these short-bus loud-mouths utter an intelligible sentence to save their lives? Well, they would be dead if they had to.

I am amazed that they can even get through the colleges they are drafted out of. Can you say, "athelete favoritsm?" "Blow the coach and the professors?"

"Uh, duh, gah, thro me da ball!" jeeuuuussss chriiiist..............

Holy christ! How about you people learn how to type. It's called English. Now I know there are abbreviations, because it's so hard to type "are" and "you", but seriously... some punctuation, maybe a little capitalization would be appreciated. I don't know where your sentences start or end and it makes it impossible to read. Not that most of you say anything worthwhile, anyway. It's usually something like "lawl go browns" or some s hit.

You still get paid for "not" getting the ball too. Right? Maybe T. J. should have stayed in Cinnci, then he and Cinco could wipe away each others tears...
