Despite being 7-0, Saints have concerns

  • Print

METAIRIE, La. (AP)—Drew Brees(notes) sounds like a man who’s embarrassed, and not because of all the compliments he’s getting over the New Orleans Saints’ perfect record through seven games.

The Saints’ past two victories have been riddled with errors, starting with eight turnovers, six of which were committed by the quarterback with four interceptions and a pair of fumbles.

“You look at it—four turnovers against Miami, four again against Atlanta — and those were good football teams we played and we were able to overcome them because of great defensive play and making some big plays offensively when we had to,” Brees said. “But the fact of the matter is: That stuff gets you beat. At some point it catches up to you and we need to fix it. It’s sloppy football and it’s not what we preach around here. It’s not what we teach. It’s not how we work. So it’s a bad reflection on us and we don’t like that.”

Apparently, this 7-0 start, which matches the 1991 Saints for the best start in the franchise’s 43-year history, hasn’t gone to the heads of these Saints.

There’s still plenty of time for things to wrong, be it poor play or things that are out of the Saints’ control, such as injuries. The 1991 Saints lost five of their last nine games, did not clinch their division until the last game of the season and lost their first playoff game.

Injuries, including starting quarterback Bobby Hebert’s shoulder sprain, contributed to that team’s slide. And as this season wears on, the Saints’ depth is beginning to be tested as well.

Several Saints regulars sat out practice on Wednesday with injuries of varying severity.

Defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis(notes) is in his second week of recovering from a right knee sprain, Kendrick Clancy(notes) had swelling in his right knee, center Jonathan Goodwin(notes) has a contusion in his right knee, linebacker Scott Fujita(notes) is in his third week recovering from a left calf strain and receiver Lance Moore(notes) has a sprained left ankle. Clancy, Goodwin and Moore all played against Atlanta.

Ellis, a 2008 first-round draft choice who has become one of New Orleans’ premier run stuffers, and Fujita, a starting strong-side linebacker, both sat out Monday night’s game.

Falcons running back Michael Turner(notes) had 151 yards rushing and a touchdown. It was by far the most yards the Saints have allowed to a single running back this season.

The Saints also have given up 68-yard touchdowns in each of the past two weeks. Miami’s Ricky Williams(notes) did it on a run as Miami jumped out to a 24-3 first-half lead. Atlanta’s Roddy White(notes) did it on a pass from Matt Ryan(notes) in the third quarter.

There were a pair of fumbles, one by Pierre Thomas(notes) and one by Mike Bell(notes), that kept Atlanta in the game on Monday night.

“I don’t know that we’ve been playing at a high level the last couple of weeks,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “In the first half at Miami we didn’t play at a very high level and there were times (Monday night) where we didn’t play at a high level. We turned the ball over four times and we gave up some big plays. The good news is that we were able to come up with the win, but you’re not going to be able to do that very often when you have four turnovers offensively. … I think we can play a lot better than we have the last two weeks.”

Payton said he is confident that his players are responding well to criticism and remaining focused on getting better.

Midseason, he said, is not the time to step back and look at what the team has accomplished.

“Because of the work required to game plan and prepare for the next opponent, you don’t spend a lot of time reflecting,” Payton said. “When we reflect, we’re trying to really critique and really remove yourself from the win or the loss. … When you put the tape on, let’s watch what we’re seeing and find where we can improve. From this past weekend’s game, there are a lot of things that we have to do better. Not just any one thing, but a number of things.”

The New Orleans Saints are a good team, they've had some come from behind wins too and i think they'll be 10-0 when they face off vs the Patriots on the MNF coming up in a few weeks and that's where their streak will come to an end.. i also think they'll be 11-1 when they go into Atlanta and they'll be 11-2 when they leave, they'll blow out the Cowboys and finish strong going 14-2... the 2009 Saints remind me a lot of the 2002 Raiders team, their offense is as good as the 2007 Patriots team too but IMO still think the 2007 Patriots were better... i think the Saints have a good chance to win it all... the key is how they match up vs the AFC Teams in the Super Bowl if they got there, Steelers, Patriots, Ravens or Colts IMO are the only 4 teams that are real threats in the AFC.. in the NFC maybe the Vikings and Falcons on a good day..I think NO can play well vs any team coming out of the NFC East as they've already proven

    Super Bowl

    Saints 33
    Patriots 31

Folks, I just checked Revelations and the Saints are supposed to win it all this year. It's on the Mayan calendar and everything.

Don't forget to say your prayers.

ToddZ...I doubt that, but Brees would TORCH your secondary, and you might wanna check his road record.

Pappy Favre will probably be on Medicare by then anyway.

Get real people; the Saints will rip Carolina's secondary to pieces, Jake will get picked a couple times, and the Saints will win by 20 again. NOBODY in New Orleans' division is a threat in the Dome. Yeah, the turnovers have got to stop, but remember, they won both those games, one on the road. They average 21 points a game more than Carolina. A power running game doesn't help much when you're down by three touchdowns in the 4th quarter.

"We'll see how they perform against a Panther team who obviously watched the Saints horrible run defense Monday night. "

I imagine Sean Payton has noticed the Panther's bad pass defense (up until last week, anyway) as well. Were I a Panthers fan, I would hope for both Williams and Stewart to get the ball 35 times... each. Things will get ugly if the Waterboy starts trying to force the ball to Steve Smith v1.0. If the Saints get a couple of unanswered scores, and the Panthers are forced to throw, this will be a blowout. If the Panthers keep the score close early, this will be a very close game and could end up being the Saints first loss. J. Peppers could really make the difference for the Panthers here. Hopefully for Carolina fans he can stay motivated to play at a high level throughout the game.

Everyone keeps saying, "this game, or that game is the toughest the Saints have yet to face." I haven't been at all worried about the Saints being able to get the W until now. They face only their second divisional game, in the eighth game of the season, against a team who has historically had their number for a good while now. I'm glad it's in the dome, but if the Saints don't eliminate turnovers, they are sure to lose this week. DeAngelo Williams and Stewart will get theirs for sure, so the Saints need to be prepared to score big and early, and that won't happen if they turn it over. I'm thinking this will be a close one with a 35-31 score -- the victor being the one who has fewer mistakes. I'm hoping it's the Saints! GEAUX BLACK AND GOLD!

I love the Saints so much! There has never been a smarter combination of offense, defense and coaching staff, ever. Unfortunately I can't say so much for the special teams so far this year :) Do I want to see a perfect season? No. I could do with a late season loss to keep us in check and have us mentally prepared for the post season.

THERE HAS BEEN NO TEAM IN THE NFL IN THE PAST 3 YEARS that has successfully entertained the world as much as the New Orleans Saints have. That's Gospel! For all that love the Saints, get to know your team, it's players, staff and really vibe off of this season's success and failures. It's gonna be a WILD f*ckin' ride! Geaux Saints!!!

Fan for entire 31 Years of my life!

I agree our Saints need to stay grounded and play each game like it is there last we have been very resiliant the last few weeks, Carolina is a tuff team running the ball and on D. Division games are always harder due to the fact that they know our personnel better than most.

    Geaux Saints!!

Saints and coaching staff need to pace themselves. It does no good sprinting off the block in a marathon. Each week, opponents are going to come in hard and faster, and the instead of going full force, the team needs to pick and choose their battles. There are no rewards to a great regular season record...the real prize is beyond the playoffs. If the Saints go .500 from here out, 11-5, 10-6 is playoff bound, and HEALTHY. This is where good, wise, management will be a factor.
