‘Skins ‘soap opera’ twist: Zorn’s job safe for now

  • Print

WASHINGTON (AP)—Well, that should quiet things down for a while.

The Jim Zorn unemployment watch is over. Jerry Gray, as it turns out, isn’t a coach-in-waiting about to get promoted any day now. Another week of Washington Redskins craziness ended with an actual message of stability Friday: The front office said Zorn will be the coach for the rest of the season.

“We were the soap opera for the NFL the last two weeks,” quarterback Jason Campbell(notes) said, “so hopefully it’ll calm down a little bit.”

The unexpectedly strong vote of confidence was delivered in the morning by executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato. After letting anxiety build for several days following last week’s loss to Kansas City, Cerrato opened his ESPN980 radio show by saying: “Jim Zorn is the head coach of the Washington Redskins and will be for the rest of this season, and hopefully into the future.”

The news dampens the rampant speculation that began when Zorn was asked to give up his play-calling duties following the 14-6 loss to the previously winless Chiefs. Zorn called the move “uncomfortable” and players expressed general concern over the state of the franchise, yet the powers-that-be remained silent until Friday.

“The frustration is very high, everywhere around here,” Cerrato said. “But the relationships internally within this organization, quite frankly, remain the same.”

Cerrato did not deliver a similar message to Zorn in person, but Zorn didn’t feel the need for it. The coach appeared to take the news in stride.

“I don’t necessarily have a reaction to that because I am the head coach,” Zorn said. “I want to be here for the next 10 years. That’s my story.”

The Redskins are 2-4 despite playing one of the weakest schedules in the league over the last five weeks. The offense, overseen by Zorn, has yet to score more than 17 points in a game and has twice failed to score a touchdown at home.

Players, tired of answering endless questions about their coach’s job, welcomed the news as they prepared for Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“That should relieve a lot of tension and a lot of stress,” Campbell said. “Guys don’t have to worry about thinking about it or talking about it.”

Linebacker London Fletcher(notes) said it was tough enough to win in the NFL without having to deal with uncertainty about the coach.

“It allows us to go and really exert all our energy and focus into the opponent,” Fletcher said. “I’m happy for him. I’m happy to know we’ll have stability this year, and into the future.”

Zorn said if Cerrato’s endorsement makes for a more focused team, he’ll take it.

“If it comforts the players—awesome!” Zorn said. “But I think our players are focused regardless of what the situation is. Whatever has to be said, I guess it has to be said, but we go on.”

The uneasiness at Redskins Park began 2 1/2 weeks ago, when Snyder and Cerrato hired longtime NFL consultant Sherm Lewis as an offensive consultant. Lewis has now been promoted to play caller, even though he is still learning the play book and personnel.

Those moves were seen as an attempt to undermine Zorn, positioning the franchise for a possible coaching change, perhaps to secondary coach Gray, during the upcoming bye week.

Cerrato offered a different perspective, saying the moves were done to help Zorn, who is in the second year of a contract that’s guaranteed for three years.

“Look at all the things that we’ve done to try to help,” Cerrato said. “You could have done other things drastically. No, you have confidence in him, because you want him to do well.”

Cerrato said he now hoped Zorn’s status is “totally crystal clear.”

“Hopefully we can just concentrate and focus on winning football games,” he said.

Cerrato had several axes to grind during his radio show. He chided the media for reporting “false rumors,” but did not explain why he waited five days to break his own silence about the play-caller switch or Zorn’s overall status. He declined to speak to reporters after practcie.

Cerrato also belittled what he called “off-the-wall” comments made by Hall of Fame receiver Steve Largent, a close friend of Zorn’s who called the switch to Lewis “a joke.”

Cerrato referred to Largent as “his friend” instead of by name, then noted the four Super Bowl rings won by Lewis as an assistant coach with San Francisco and Green Bay.

“I don’t think ‘his friend’ has a one,” Cerrato said.

Even through Lewis left the NFL after the 2004 season and was enjoying retirement in Michigan when the Redskins called, Cerrato feels the 67-year-old West Coast offense expert is up to the play-calling task.

“You don’t forget how to ride a bike if you hadn’t rode your bike in four years,” Cerrato said.

Ya know I've been a Skins fan for the better part of 35 years...I can't remember if there was a time when the franchise as a whole was as bad as they are now (Geeezz! I hope not)...I never thought there would come a day when I couldn't bear to watch...It's down right painfull - PAINFULL I TELL YA!!! Every time Zorn opens his mouth on the sideline makes me cringe!!!!The madness has got to stop sooner or later...I can't even bring myself to wear my Skins stuff anymore cuz most everyone has some smart ass comment...Drives me nuts!...NUTS!
I don't wish ill will on anyone, but at this point Snyder should consider sticking to a strict bacon fat smoothy diet...Cheers!

Hey tmh...I hope that was an attempt at humor you were going with in your post. Because if you truly are a "pasty white guy," it is kind of odd that you would say, "its the same phenomenon that got US black people using the n word."

    Just a thought.

Yep...the Redskins just don't have it. Neither do the Rams, Buccaneers, Chiefs, Raiders, or Lions. I think there are a few teams out there that decided from Week One that their goal was to get the first pick of the 2010 draft. Apparently there are supposed to be some good players in the upcoming draft and it will be a much stronger class than the 09 draft. But really? Is it so good that teams are intentionally sucking? Probably not. I just thought I'd throw that out there as a vague possibility. Because right now, there are a lot of unhappy fans that are looking for something to point a finger at, and they are pointing it at all the good teams and the refs being cheaters...and other such things. Seriously, this is not a good time for the NFL to be having such disparity between teams. The economy sucks. People need good football for a means of mental escape. Please oblige.

    #468 Don Draper's point

The WAS franchise was named not by a closet racist like ~insert your favorite whipping boy here~ but by one of the last openly racist owners in the league. Washington was the last team to hire black players. Every time you defend the name, you defend him and all racism including against blacks. Next you can defend Lindbergh for defending Hitler's ideas.

Native American reunions at Cards games? that's called black humor. its the same phenomenon that got us black people using the n word. Using the n word isn't something a white guy should do, neither is saying how awesome it is that American Indians realize there are horrible stereotypes of them. But you wouldn't understand that because most people think suffering is ok as long as its not them.

Evidence? You can't go 2 Yahoo news items without a honky posting their complaint about reverse discrimination. If that's even a thing, its been around for 20 years. the 200 years before that was the regular kind If you have complained against reverse discrimination because it might cost you a job you are a racist douche

PS i'm a pasty white guy

Jim Zorn is a class act as a man, player, teacher and coach. Who knows the cancer that fills that once-proud franchise? Frankly, he is more going for him than Snyder, Cerruto, or many of the unproductive players that are on the team. And the front office need remember that when the HOF's are siding with him over the front office management, it's a sign of how screwed up the team is at its very core.

Jim Zorn moves on with his life as, not only, a man of faith but a competitive spirit that keeps taking the body blows that Snyder and Cerruto throw at him. He was a competitive NFL qb in Seattle and in the early 80's when the Hawks had no OL to speak, he took the the sacks and the injuries, and kept coming back until he couldn't anymore. That's the way he is. He won't run from a fight.

Vinnie Cerrato and Dan Snyder hire the coaches, draft the players and assemble the team. The sad and sorry state the Redskins have been in for years now isn't anyone's fault but their's.

Why do you think Joe Gibbs retired again after 3 years? He cant stand Snyder & GM. Considering the job that Joe Gibbs has done , 2 playoffs in 3 years is pretty good. Without total control of personal or draft choices. Had it been a different owner , I think Gibbs probably take Redskins to another superbowl. Redskins need to clean up the front office, get rid of overpriced freeagents , get rid of incompetent players. Snyder needs to leave the new coach the f@#k alone. Letting Marty Schotthemier go was the worse decision for the Redskins.

So if Vinny finally realizes that Zorn never had a chance with all they left on his "plate", how do they help Zorn by deciding what he can or can't do???

From bad to worse...you couldn't find the new coach that the front office sees as the soluton. You wait for 2 weeks after the players publicly ask you to issue a supportive statement for the coach...and finally give one since no one wants to coach for you. You state that it was Zorn's idea to give up play calling when anyone with half a brain can see that the coach was less than thrilled. With 10 games left to play how do you "HELP" the coach without getting his buy in??

Whether or not Zorn is the coach of the future, respect the fact that this man is taking these insults and being the bigger person by focusing on doing his best to help the team. The Redskins have the greatest opportunity we have or will see. If this team can rise to the occasion behind Zorn, they can outpace our idiotic front office.

Fans need to support the team, not this organization. GO SKINS!!!!!
