Redskins’ Portis leaves game with head injury

  • Print

ATLANTA (AP)—Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis(notes) was sidelined in Sunday’s game after taking a blow to the head from Atlanta Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud(notes).

Portis left the game with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter after a helmet-to-helmet hit from DeCoud. The Redskins said Portis suffered a head injury and would not return.

There was no penalty on the hit.

Portis was helped to his feet after being checked by the medical staff on the field. He appeared shaky at first, but then walked off the field with a towel over his head.

Washington quarterback Jason Campbell(notes) left the game with an ankle injury in the fourth quarter but returned for the next possession. Campbell was hurt when tackled from behind by Jonathan Babineaux(notes).

Redskins offensive tackle Mike Williams left with an ankle injury on the same play.

It was Campbell’s second injury of the game. He left with a chest problem after he was sacked for the fifth time in the first half. He returned for the start of the second half.

Todd Collins(notes) replaced Campbell after each injury.

Falcons receiver Brian Finneran(notes) left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury and did not return. There were no immediate details on the severity of the injury.

Come on portis is well above the league average has 500 yards rushing on the year which at this point in the year says to me if nothing happens you have a thousand yard rusher .I know Jason has as many picks as tochdowns at 7 and 8 but its hard to throw on your back and our defense is not that good (Falcons Fan) he has been sack around 30 times already on pace for 60 sacks i am with josh the Skins have talent but no one to put it together there problems start in the office They can bring in who ever yhey want and its not going to matter untill they have a leader and some chemistry

#14 Great use of sarcasim....at least that's what I hope it is. So lets hope for a good top draft pick next year. That is unless Danny Boy decides to trade all the picks for another washed up player. But, yeah love the sarcasim. We all know Dan and Vinny gotta go. And, they can take Jason "The Super Bum" Campbell with them with them.

Josh: One thing I would give Snyder credit for is his recent interview acknowledging the dismal play of the team and he shows a fire and the desire to win. Not even getting that out of Davis anymore. I try to look at it like he owns the team and that's more than I can say as a football fan. He's still young and yet OWNS the team. He should just get someone else to run it. They have that opportnuity. Unfortunately, I don't think the Raiders will stand a chance until Davis dies. So the Redskins will probably turn it around before the Raiders and that is sad towards all the Raiders fans out there. Maybe Al can give your team JaMarcus Russell. The Ryan Leaf acting bust that costs the team about 95% of their lossed, yet is never the reason they win. Need Chuckie to come back and run the team as both coach and GM. Won't happen because Al is too stubborn and won't allow it. Snyder on the other hand, seems like he would allow that to take place and think they will move that direction duing the offseason.

Portis is a tough cookie ... he'll come back with a roar .... The QB Campbell has got to either take a shot of booze or get laid before he gets on the field as his vision is too blurry to be considered good enough to start ( or even play ) for Washington anymore .... his performance or lack of it .... flat out cost the skins this game .....

Bendgod, anyone sporting a RAIDERS logo has got a lot of nerve to offer organizational advice. You must be joking. Yes, the Redskins are one of the worst teams in the league, and like the Raiders, you need look no further than the Owner. Rather than look at successful organizations that hire experienced football pros and get out of their way (see Pats, Colts, and Steelers), what does Snyder do? Imitate the worst of the worst, Al Davis, making nonsense moves, hiring on instincts, wasting draft picks and money. Look at the class organizations like Pitt and Indy. They have set a template out for success. If Snyder would get out of his own way, he would see that the formula calls for team chemistry, not superstars for $$$ on the exchange market.

You shouldn't criticize the Redskins. Dan and Vinnie are doing great jobs. Hainesworth is top notch. What other owner could pony up the bucks? puh-lease. There have been a few unlucky bounces, but the Skins are on the right path. I think Dan should raise ticket prices to get rid of some of the fair weather riff-raff.
Portis will be back next week. Jason had an off day, but he is a keeper.
    Don't be so negative, chuckleheads.

His best years have passed and now he is trying to make a difference for one of the worst teams in the game today. The skins need to bring in a top coach to run the team and organization. Someone like chuckie or Cower. They may go with Shannahan and that would be fine with me cause I'm already not a skins fan and do not like Shannahan at all. If I was the skins owner, i wouldn't even consider him as I wouldnt't want to see a grown man cry when I had to can his *ss. Hopefully Snyder feels the same. I'd hate for them to ruin Cowers career and/or Grudens as well. Why go to a celler dweller after winning rings and when afforded the opportunity to go anywhere they choose. Screw the skins, they have not been very good ever sense the hogs phased out and especially after Snyder took over.

portis is overrated. not a coincidence that when betts came in the running game started to work. he hits the holes much faster. landry is another overrated player. pracing around after he makes a tackle and then on the next defensive series looked like he was afraid to tackle turner.. he's pathetic
