NFL looking into Redskins-Falcons scuffle

  • Print

ASHBURN, Va. (AP)—DeAngelo Hall(notes) says he was only trying to help a teammate. Mike Smith(notes) says he was trying to restore order. If that’s the case, how did the Washington Redskins cornerback and the Atlanta Falcons coach end up in the middle of such an untidy scrum?

The NFL is trying to answer that very question as it investigates the altercation that happened in the second quarter of Atlanta’s 31-17 victory over Washington at the Georgia Dome on Sunday. It’s anyone’s guess what fines or suspensions will result from the sequence of events that found former Falcons player Hall on the wrong sideline surrounded by a throng of wrong-color jerseys.

“That was a crazy deal,” Redskins running back Rock Cartwright(notes) said. “There was a lot going on over there. I see their head coach got involved, which I think was not right. I see a lot of their players got involved. I’m sure DeAngelo will get a fine for it, and I hope those guys get fined, too. There was a lot more of their guys than there was our guys.”

A review of the video doesn’t help much. The commotion started when Redskins safety LaRon Landry(notes) was whistled for a late sideline hit on quarterback Matt Ryan(notes). While Landry and Ryan were walking back on the field as if nothing major had happened, Hall—he wasn’t even involved in the play—is quickly surrounded by Atlanta players, coach Smith and Falcons director of athletic performance Jeff Fish.

Hall said after the game that he went to the sideline to come to Landry’s aid. He accused Fish of trying to “get some licks in.” Of Smith, he said: “When a coach comes over there to put his hands on you in a harmful way, something needs to be done.”

Hall said he would file a complaint with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, but he doesn’t have to bother. League spokesman Randall Liu said Monday that “any altercation of that nature is always reviewed for possible discipline.”

The replays show plenty of physical contact involving Hall, Smith and Fish. Smith said after the game he was merely playing peacemaker. He maintained that stance Monday.

“I can tell you this. Our quarterback was hit late out of bounds on the sideline,” Smith said. “We were trying to restore order on our sideline.”

Hall was not made available to reporters Monday, a rare bit of silence from one of the team’s most outspoken players. Hall spent last week criticizing the Falcons for the way they treated him before he was traded to Oakland after the 2007 season and was obviously fired up for Sunday’s game.

In fact, another of Hall’s infamous NFL moments occurred on the same sideline two years ago—a shouting match with then-Atlanta coach Bobby Petrino that led to a $100,000 fine for the player. Hall was booed loudly during pregame introductions Sunday.

“That’s D-Hall,” Falcons defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux(notes) said. “Everybody knows he’s a fiery guy. He likes to talk smack. That’s just part of his game.”

A Redskins spokesman said Hall will likely speak once the NFL has decided whether to take further action. There were only two penalties called on the play — one on Landry for the late hit, and one on Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth(notes), who shoved a Falcons player after Hall’s teammates finally arrived on the scene to help out.

Coach Jim Zorn said his own review of the game verified Hall’s side of the story.

“I read what he said, and it looked to me on video it’s exactly what happened,” Zorn said. “We were penalized, and what he was trying to do was get LaRon off the sideline and Laron was going and he got grabbed.

“I think there was emotion involved because their player just got hit out of bounds, the quarterback. That’s a tough deal in itself. The emotion rose, and he was the only guy in there. I was really actually proud of DeAngelo for keeping his composure.”

The incident is the latest in an incredible run of Redskins news that has made the team’s actual on-field performance an afterthought in recent weeks. In the last month, owner Dan Snyder and team management have stripped Zorn of play-calling duties, announced that fans are banned from carrying signs into the stadium, given Zorn a vote of confidence, issued an apology of sorts for the team’s play and had an assistant coach lash out at Hall of Fame running back John Riggins for claiming Snyder is someone whose “heart is dark.”

Meanwhile, the Redskins (2-6) have lost four straight, the injuries are mounting, and the offense still hasn’t scored 17 points in a game. There was a sea change in the locker room Monday as players spoke about how they’ll stay motivated through the final eight weeks.

“It’s your job. You’ve got to have pride,” Cartwright said. “That’s how you take care of your family.”

hall is a freaking half ass corner . he was exposed as being a good zone only corner and his attitude and lack of talent got him out of atlanta and oakland. he runs his mouth in his sleep . and as for zorn , if he saw the replay , he would see laron walking away with ryan to the middle of the field when hall (who was out of position as usual) comes over and runs his mouth to the other teams bench . he did this numerous times whila on the atlanta team . maybe if someone would have taken his helmet off, put him on the ground and stomped his face with cleats like haynesworth did he would learn to shut up . the skins are trying to get the problems solved and dont need any dion sanders wanna be's creating more.

Guys, guys READ the article. Alot of you are posting that the Skins scored 17 points in 2 games this season. Key word here OFFENSE, OFFENSE, OFFENSE, has not scored 17 points in a game.

One guy even copied and pasted the sentence in this article, and still could not get it!! This may still be too difficult for some of you!! Here, I will break it down for you:

Article states that the OFFENSE has not scored 17 points in a game. True, the Skins have scored 17 points in 2 games this season, however, the OFFENSE and DEFENSE did so collectively....(that means together)!

Now, how does a DEFENSE score you may ask? Well, it could have came off a pick-6 (that means intercept the ball and run it back for a touchdown), or off a fumble recovery (that means that the other team accidentally drops the ball, and you can pick it up and run back for a touchdown)!!!

So in conclusion, as the article reads, the OFFENSE, OFFENSE, OFFENSE, OFFENSE, has not scored 17 points in a game all season, not OFFENSE, and DEFENSE!!!

Please read and fully grasp the concept before you get all "clicker happy" on your mouse!!

This was brought to you today by the letter F, and the number 4!!!

    Peace bi**hes!!!

    GO FALCONS!!!

It would have been bter if somebody would have pulled off somebodys helmit and poked somebody in teh eye and said "Upi yours btch"real loud so it got on camra. and tehn if osmebody would have grabbed a down marker and chucked it like a spear at somebody but missed and skeweered a fan in teh styands and he falls over teh railing onto teh filed and dies. then somebody else picks up a chain marker and runs it through somebody and uses the chain to wrap up a few people and stucks the othe rmarker at teh ened of teh chain into someboy else abdomin. then somebody uses teh jug machine to launch balls into teh top of teh dome and knock somethin lose and it falls and crushes every body on teh filed. Aweosme. Hehehee.

cowboysfan928 I agree with you. I too hope the Redskins turn it around. The Cowboys vs Redskins used to equate to a great rivalry. Even though the 'Skins were the enemy, as a Cowboy fan from way back,I always respected them as an orginization. I now have an empathetic bond with their fans as both teams have owners with egos bigger than Alaska. A lot of money and no class. I guess I suffer from old school syndrome.

I watched the interview with DeAngelo Hall and his biggest point that he emphasized was that he was going to be in Atlanta in the off season and that coach Smith could "look him up" then and they could "settle things"... Hard to believe this was coming from a man and not some thug, tuff guy, high school kid. Its hard to believe the mentalities of some of these men who make hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars and we call them PROFESSIONAL athletes. This man is obviously too stupid to realize how embarrassing his own interview is to him.

The scuffle was the only positive thing to come out of D.C. this year. We got the stimulus, health care reform, lead by Nancy Pelosi with Starkist tucked under her arm. I bet she thinks she owns California. Zorn is sayin "dude this is keepin the pressure off me, maybe they'll forget I'm standing here." Every donut has a hole so the rain can pour through. Please get a QB and get rid of this bumb Jason scared to walk Campbell. While your at it get a few more offensive linemen and try and create some depth with the practice squad. What's the chance Daniel Snyder can become a one term owner?

Atlanta's coach had even less right to do what he did than the players themselves so I say suspend everyone involved and maybe they will stop acting like children

Yall know what! Maybe if the NFL defeminize the game and holds the refs accountable for bad calls then the league might earn back the respect that got them this far. I think all teams should be fined the the same as the players even if it's multiple fines per game for not instilling proper dicipline. If it happens a second time the NFL should ban them from the league. Along with all the junkies that take real drugs not the over the counter legal type.

I was AT the game, and D Hall had absolutely no reason to cross onto the Falcons sideline.. The play was over and done with! He's a little B!tch! I'm just sorry that Jenkins or White couldn't burn his A$$ for over a 100 yds like I witnessed Steve Smith do numerous times to him when he played for the Falcons. Talks sh!t, then gets burned, is all he does. Hall is the most overrated cornerback in the NFL. He's fast, yes, or atleast used to be fast, but his mouth has slowed him down and made him a mediocre journeyman. Let's see what team he'll be playing for next season. Stay tuned!
