Time for answers from Redskins’ QB Campbell

  • Print

ASHBURN, Va. (AP)—You would think with all the questions about Jason Campbell’s(notes) ability the last nine months that no one would be more anxious to open the season than the Washington Redskins quarterback.

Can he be a franchise quarterback? Was his confidence shaken for good when he realized the front office wanted someone else?

But Campbell knows the second-guessing won’t end Sunday against the New York Giants.

“They still won’t be answered,” Campbell said Wednesday with a smile. “We’ve got a whole year to go.”

But at least there will be concrete numbers to back up whatever Campbell arguments anyone wants to make as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. If he doesn’t play well, he almost certainly won’t be back in 2010, and owner Dan Snyder and front office chief Vinny Cerrato will rue more than ever their unsuccessful attempts to land Jay Cutler(notes) and Mark Sanchez(notes) in the offseason.

If Campbell does play well, Snyder and Cerrato can make the case that they lit the fire under the fifth-year quarterback from Auburn.

The preseason reviews were mixed. After unimpressive performances in limited action in two games, Campbell played a promising half in the third August game against the New England Patriots.

“I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t play well,” said Cerrato, the executive vice president of football operations. “I don’t know if anybody could have more pressure on him in a preseason game than the media put on him for the New England game and the guy came out and played great.”

Somewhere in between is coach Jim Zorn, who was the one who gave Campbell daily updates during the Cutler-Sanchez discussions in the spring.

“We didn’t sit for hours and agonize over the issues,” Zorn said. “We got together, it was informational, and I’d come challenge him with ‘What are you going to do with this now?”’

As the season goes along, there are sure to be debates over what constitutes a franchise performance. It should be noted that Campbell’s career completion percentage (58.5) and passer rating (80.4) are both higher than those of his well-paid counterpart with the Giants, Eli Manning(notes) (55.9 and 76.1).

But Campbell has never thrown more than 13 touchdown passes in a season. Manning has topped 20 TDs for four straight years. And, of course, Manning has won a Super Bowl, while Campbell has yet to appear in a playoff game.

Then there’s the oddity that has dogged Campbell his whole football life, the fact that offenses keep changing around him. It’s now such a familiar story: He played for four offensive coordinators at Auburn and had three different offensive schemes in his first four years with the Redskins. With Zorn back for a second season, Campbell is running the same plays for the second year in a row.

“It gives me an opportunity, a little leeway to go out and play freely,” Campbell said. “One thing you have to do as a quarterback is continue to feel free and play free and that’s the standpoint I’m at now, compared to last season at the beginning.”

Campbell cautioned against making quick judgments based on whatever happens in Sunday’s game. After all, Washington laid an egg in Giants Stadium on opening day a year ago, losing 16-7. On the very first play, Campbell held the ball too long and was sacked, a mistake Zorn couldn’t overlook.

“Coach wouldn’t let it go for about two weeks,” Campbell said. “That’s the one thing that sticks out.”

But the Redskins rebounded to win six of their next seven before Campbell and the offense began to sputter.

“It’s a new beginning,” Campbell said. “Every team wants to go out and set a tempo for the rest of the season, and a lot of times it doesn’t dictate how things are going to turn out. It’s about getting started.”

cut him loose cut the offensive coordinator loose, and find someone who can generate some offense, and who can and will make the best of the talent they have. same ol' story in DC. Highest ticket prices, refreshments etc, to watch a lack luster team say, coulda woulda shoulda. buy an offensive guru next time you break out the checkbook to buy a big name player.

At this point I can't think of a starter in the NFL that I wouldn't take over Campbell. Matt Stafford is a possible exception, but not if you consider the upside. It's time for the Redskins to cut this guy loose. He costs too much for what he brings.

Victor, post #65, is absolutely correct. It's not Campbell, it's Zorn. How can you blame a QB when your coach wasn't even an Offensive/Defensive Coordinator???

I just want to comment about Cambell,Last year he looked great ,passed great ,made few mistakes,I think Its play calling that is killing our offense,It's always been run, run, pass and has been a nose to the grind stone offense, but the O LIne isnt what it used to be and portis has not reached the numbers he did in denver and has to work twice as hard to perform with this ageing line. They can get the ball down feild but when it comes to sealing the deal they just dont have the "big play that is gonna get em 7 points!!I think if he can play like he did last year and just tweak the red zone plays a bit we are lookin at playoffs.....That is if they remain healthy. But dont get down on them they are a talented team they just need stability in coaching and a better imagination in play calling, a bit more risky play calling when it counts instead of playing it safe!!!..........and the beat goes on!!! Go Skins!!!

This is what I think, I too thought the Skins were crazy for drafting the so called big 3. If the big 3 can produce this year then we can say great the Skins know something others don`t. If they fail this year questions will arise as to why they do the things they do. Picking an offensive lineman high in the draft is questionable since his pay will be high compared to the starters and he still has to prove he can block at the N.F.L. level. Still they had some late round picks that they still did not use on a O-lineman and the people they did pick made the team so plus and minus I think they did OK. The team is younger and defense wins games so this year depending on their record they can add to the offense, O-line and running back has to be addressed so Clinton Portis and whom ever is QB (hope its Jason Cambell) will have it easier. Every team has a weak spot but if the Skins win this year they will only get better if their draft picks can play at the highest level.

Cerrato is a joke as a GM. Three receivers in the second round of the 2008 draft - maybe pick a top offensive lineman would have made a bit more sense? Then this year again no O linemen. Meanwhile Thomas and Samuels - great linemen in their prime are now aging and oft injured. There is no depth on this line.

They almost want to make Campbell look bad so they can get waste their next 1st round draft pick on a QB. In this league you win the best fat boys up front.... not a QB scrambling for his life.

Go Skins- I've been a fan since the early 1960's and always will be. However, the team has lost alot of it's class. Come on guys, give a girl from DC something to be proud of!

It's beginning to be very apparent that the blame game is taking over Redskin Park. Sorry Daniel, but ever since you became owner, this team has struggled. You and Cerrato don't know your asses from a hole in the ground. Skins Fans, this knucklehead was even considering offering Terrell Owens a one year deal. These people who are in charge of our team have forgotten that we are NFC EAST. No place for west coast strategies. Notice how all teams are going to bigger wide receivers and Kelly and Thomas aren't seeing any playing time. As previously stated, what good is any QB, or RB without a mean, hard hitting front line. Your Running Back doesn't wear down the defense, Your offensive line does. Take Campbell off the administrative roller coaster and stop screwing with his psychological outlook with backdoor trade talks. Get the man a solid line to protect him and open holes for his RB. Throw in a couple of big speedy down field targets. Get back to smash mouth football, and I guarantee everyone will see a big difference, and so would teams like Pittsburgh, Baltimore, New York. Front office, don't you get tired of seeing your team get it's asses handed to them year after year. The Fans sure do.............................

You people who talk all this @#$% about Campbell being a bad qb should first learn a little bit about football. If you are constantly on your ass because you have no o-line or in a new system every year and still throw the least amount of int plus have a qb rating of 85.7, you must be doing something good. Justin D must be a crackhead or something, what other reason could there be for the way he spits out those bogus ass numbers, 500 yds in the pre-season, wow, what a stud...........you idiot.......

a lot of time, having a good and protecting line goes a long way.also ,cambell runs plays that are called to him he does't call his own plays. let's put the blame where it belongs, on his entire offensive system. having your quarterback dismantle like how the giants, steelers and sofort did is a clear indication. i'm a die-hard SKINSSS fan and would be the first to boo.why would a team draft prototype receivers and not create situations and good protection for a sound passing game. how do you think those soft hands tightends feel. GIVE THE MAN A BREAK, HE'LL COME THROUGH. GO REDSKINS.

First iwould like to congratulate Mr Campbell for being a professional in handling this situaton can't honestly say i would have handled it in such a way . With That being said yes Dan Hardoby get rid of a perfectly good quarter back so he can go to a team that plays to its' strengths and incorparates him in the offense . actually letting him stay with a system longer that a year . so when that team beats the skkins we can all point to you and sayt this was you idea lol .
no honestly during the time they were 6-2 and he was having a good year what then mr brianp where was his playing level then hmmm. He may be moving forward slowly i am sure it could have been faster with the same coach , system etc.... but . ANd By the way it was Jason not Colt leading that charge although colt may be a good talent you will see it os talent +plus experience plus team effort including Coachs and the correcct scheme for the player there not who they wish were there that wins

What I don't get is why he'd be shocked. If they didn't correctly think he isn't a good quarterback last month, why would they think he was this month? The Redskins stink and he's one of the many reasons why... A new owner couldn't hurt either.
