Redskins hire McVay as assistant, retain Jackson

ASHBURN, Va. (AP)—The Washington Redskins have hired Sean McVay as an offensive assistant on new coach Mike Shanahan’s staff.

McVay worked for new Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett last year with the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League.

The Redskins also formally announced Friday that Steve Jackson will remain with the team as safeties coach. Jackson has been on the Redskins staff since 2004.

So everyone is so critical of Jason Campbell, saying he doesn't have the tools to be a good QB. So why isn't anyone saying the same of Clinton Portis when it is so obviously true. Portis is done as an elite back. He doesn't have the same explosiveness through the hole that he once did, nor does he cut as quickly. He's lost his top end speed, and he's constantly hurt. Yet there is nothing here saying we should get rid of Portis. A good running game is the best thing you can give a QB, yet we're stuck with a washed up tailback behind a horrible offensive line, and you guys are still talking about how horrible Campbell is.
That being said, I still think Campbell can play, he just needs stability in what system he's running and a good offensive line that will open holes for a capable running back, which Portis is not anymore, and keep the pass rushers off him. Give Campbell those two things, which drafting Russell Okung would go a long way toward accomplishing (especially in our own division, given that at LT, he'd be blocking Juqua Parker against PHI, Demarcus Ware against DAL, and Osi Umenyiora against NYG) and I think he'll be okay.
I'm hoping we draft offensive line with the first two picks, find a late-round RB who can make plays, and one of the two WRs we used 2nd round picks on a couple of years ago emerges as a solid threat opposite Moss. Maybe then, Campbell will be able to show what he can do.

MAc......Tebow? seriously? Great person but he wont be playing on the Gators vs college kids....wouldn't mind seeing Campbell for another year. Shanahan said he would play towards his strengths (roll out more). Higher needs on O line, RB. Defense did ok but I love the fact that Blatche is gone Horton will be back. Hopefully they will let Hanesworth lose (according to him Blatche kept a leash on him). Not sure if they will convert to a 3-4. I like LB Chris Wilson...always seems to make plays...not sure why he's not used more.

Just my thoughts but Tebow going to Jacksonville to help them sell tickets

Portis had some good year's but the Skins need to move him for a couple of 2nd Rd. picks. And Haynesworth......Well.....I think some 2nd Rounders and a Veteren or Two.Cooly's got great work ethic,desire......I Personally like him, but think of the great trade value he would bring. And Cambell....um......He to would be wounderful Trade bait. He's a hard worker but.......The Game is Changing as far as Quarter Backs are Concerned.Give Collin's a Shot for a year or 2.As Crazy as this Might Sound,I Would take Tim Tebow in addition to some other Veteren's,and or Draft Pick's as Needed .QB,HALFBACK,WR,TE,BLOCKING BACK,SPECIAL TEAM'S. HE'S SMASHMOUTH FOOTBALL.He Know's How to Handle the BALL.Would be a fine addition ,and would bring Leadership,Hunger,Desire and would most definitly,Call out any Player, and Ecourage the Whole Skin Organization. Most of all:"He's A Proven Leader,Motavator And Winner"!Mr. Snyder is on the Right Path.He got Allen as a GM.Great.I wanted to see Coach Bill Cowher. However Coach Mike Shanahan is just as able.Great.Now,Bring in Tebow somewhere in the Early 2nd Round.Think:"Bret Farve,Bobby Douglas,Sammy Baugh,Fran Tarkington,John Riggins,Mike Alstott,Larry Czonka.....

    TO D G,

Try getting a few facts straight before ranting here as the Redskin fans are more football smart then you think.. First off Shanahan did not take over Dan Reeves Denver team it was Wade Phillips who in fact did not even make it to the playoffs in 93 and 94 compiling a dismaying record of 16 and 16 (500.) in his two year stint. here are the facts.

Reeves- 1981-1992 11 years with a 601. winning percentage with a record of 110 wins and 73 losses..3 AFC championships

    Wade- 1993-1994 2 years with a 500. winning percentage at 16 and 16.

    Shanahan-1995-2008 14 years with a 616 winning percentage with a 138 and 86 record. Two Super Bowls.

Apparently Shanahan turned what was a so so team with Elway playing under Wade completely around. Now in came Terril davis and the final piece was in place. Thanks to Shanahan.

The Broncos entered Super Bowl XXXII after suffering 4 Super Bowl losses: Super Bowls XII, XXI, XXII, and XXIV. In all of those losses the Broncos never had the ability to rush well enough or score enough points to be competitive. Denver was blown out in each one, losing all 4 by a combined scoring margin of 163–50.

The last three Super Bowl losses were under starting quarterback John Elway, whose ad-libbing skills enabled the Broncos to advance to the league's championship game in a span of 3 out of four seasons. Elway also led his team to the 1991 AFC Championship Game, but they lost in a defensive struggle to the Buffalo Bills, 10–7.

The team's fortunes changed when Mike Shanahan became head coach of the Broncos in 1995. Shanahan was previously Denver's offensive coordinator during those Super Bowl losses, but was fired in 1991 after a power struggle between him and then-head coach Dan Reeves over the offensive personnel. Shanahan then served as the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers from 1992 to 1994, including the 49ers' Super Bowl XXIX win. Under Shanahan, the San Francisco offense ranked first in the league in total yards gained for all three of his seasons there.

When Shanahan returned to the Broncos in 1995, he selected running back Terrell Davis in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Davis became the cornerstone of Denver's rebuilt running game, leading the team with 1,117 rushing yards in just his rookie year. The Broncos finished the 1995 regular season with just an 8–8 record. By 1996, the Broncos had the league's best offense, gaining 5,791 yards of total offense, and recorded the AFC's best regular season record at 13-3, but they were upset by the second-year Jacksonville Jaguars, 30-27, in the playoffs.

During the 1997 regular season, the Broncos once again had the league's best offense with 5,872 total yards of offense, and led the league in total points scored with 472. Although they recorded a 12-4 regular season record, they finished in second place behind the 13-3 Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.

Thank you New Day. On the side of humor how about Snyder hiring Jillian Michaels from The Biggest losers to get the damn lead/laziness out of our team! Before we started losing games and players to injuries it was obvious the Skins were wheezing and weak halfway through games. They came to camp outta shape and left camp in even worse condition.

Jeff, you're right about JC. Major flaws that have nothing to do with OL. Whether Shan decides to keep him and make him the starter remains to be seen.

And speaking of the OL, I'm sure you heard that Shan brought in Kory Lichtensteiger. I guess once the coach saw that he was available he wasted no time in picking him up. KL's already been waived a few times by various teams, so I'm not sure about his effectiveness. But he's played for Shan and knows his system. I think this is a very shrewd move and a good indication that the front office is seriously working on the OL.

I cant agree William S...Jason can not throw over 20 yards with accuracy. If Campbell stays then santana Moss goes? No way...J.C just doesnt have to tools here. He is slow to read his recievers routes as a result too many sacks, fumbles and interceptions. On top of all of that..He doesnt even look over his left shoulder and is constantly blind sided by by anything that comes that way. Go look at some films then you judge that one.

We all know what a good solid O-line does.. It looks as if our rants have gotton Snyders attention there but...A good O-Line makes ok Q-backs look good and the good Q-backs look great and the graet Q-backs Legends..I happen to want a good Q-back look great next season not just look good.

All year I have seen Moss open just to see Campbell ignore him over and over when he did have the time. Every time Collins has been handed the pigskin he dramiticly changed the game with scoring drives and the reason is the whole game changed when Moss was dialed in. Need I remind you Collins did take us to the play-offs when that picture was looking damn near impossable with Campbell? Look he is ok but he is no Doug Williams by a long shot. you have to under stand..The more options you have with your Quarterbacks range the softer the defence on the other side becomes. Now why do you need Moss with Campbell is more of a question and I choose Moss.

We need to re-sign Jason Campbell. He's got all the tools, and he's been putting up decent numbers on bad offensive teams. That being said, these bad offenses have all been the result of poor offensive line play. That is what excites me about Shanahan coming in. He will focus on building this offensive line, which with the talent level we have at the skill positions in Moss, Cooley, Davis, Thomas, Betts, etc. we should be able to put up some pretty good offensive numbers.

    Jeff,

I agree with you on JC, but so far Shan seems to like him. There's been no mention of his actual fate as of yet, even though his contract has expired, which indicates that Shan's focused on starting with the coaching staff first before considering what to do with the players.

I think the general consensus is that Portis is done in D.C. I think a lot of other familiar faces are no longer going to be stepping out onto FedEx Field come September. At least on offense, that would be an improvement.

As for Snyder, it baffles me that it takes a guy this long to finally figure out that he's been his own worst enemy. He stated recently that he's not as involved as people think. Anyone buying that??

    NEW DAY,

It may be that im chomping at the bit New Day...11 years without a GM is the reason we are not contending any longer. I want the O-Line addressed asap and not just addresed but built into a solid unit like the days of old...I remember Russ grim telling how they use to take a few weeks off after a season then start working out after that. he was a firm believer that the next season started after the lst one ended.

Call me crazy if you want but im a firm believer that if you come to camp in shape and ready to go then you set the tone for the whole season.... That is the reason I want Portis outta here asap and traded to some team that may be dumb enough to trade us a good offensive lineman.

Take the draft coming up...Do we take the best player we can get or do we take the best player that we need? Joe Bugel showed us the key to winning (hogs) and Snyder just wasted his talent. There is no time like the present to start shopping Portis for what we need. Let him walk into someone else's camp swaggering that he is so good he doesnt need to pratice....Backbiting and slackers never did and never will make what makes a good team and thats TEAMWORK....

As far as Campbell goes......Although im luke warm on him I believe I would trade him off for some good linemen as well and let Collins have the shot he deserves. Why do we need a quarterback that cant throw far enough to a Santana Moss?

Why so fast? Hell the bitter taste of 2009 is still fresh in the minds of owners that are looking for a running back and quaterback. Those teams may have what we need Tenn, Pitt, Chiefs and even the Giants.

MY BIGGEST FEAR...DAN SNYDER CHANGING HIS MIND AND MESSING THE HUGE PROGRESS WE HAVE MAD IN SUCH A SHORT TIME.

Jeff, why so anxious? The next season's not starting for another 8 months. You have sit tight. It's only been a week since Shan was hired and his staff is being carefully assembled. Everyone's talking about the O-line, and yes, that's a huge issue. But it starts with the coaching staff and you go from there. Plus, there are other positions on the team that need to be addressed. It's Bruce Allen's job to also seek out those prospects in the draft and FA market. We'll see what he's made of soon enough. I'm still kinda getting used to having a GM. It's weird not having one for so long.

There are so many super-talented players and teams throughout the NFL. The draft has improved 'parity' so that dominance by one franchise is not as easy as in the past!!!! The Redskins are trying to make needed change, but FANS must be patient............which they usually are not!!! GOOD LUCK to the Redskins!!
