Rams QB Bulger out 3-6 weeks with broken leg

  • Print

ST. LOUIS (AP)—St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger(notes) will be sidelined three to six weeks because of a fractured left leg sustained in Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

The team said it would not place Bulger on injured reserve.

Bulger underwent two MRIs on Monday, one on his groin and hamstring and a second for what the team believed was a swollen knee. He also was to be tested for concussion-related symptoms Tuesday after a physically demanding loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Coach Steve Spagnuolo said the first MRI revealed a strain. Spagnuolo held his news conference Monday before Bulger’s second MRI, but had not been optimistic about the quarterback’s chance of playing this week.

“Marc Bulger’s pretty banged up,” the coach said. “Marc’s got a few things going on.”

Bulger has completed 56.7 percent of his passes for five touchdowns and six interceptions for the Rams (1-9). Backup Kyle Boller(notes) will make his third start of the year Sunday against the Seahawks.

Boller has played in three games, completing 57 percent of his passes with two touchdown passes and three interceptions. He finished a 36-17 loss to the Packers after Bulger injured his rotator cuff on a sack and started the next two games, a 35-0 loss to the 49ers and 38-10 loss to the Vikings, but was shaken up in that game and replaced by Bulger.

Linebacker Chris Chamberlain(notes) and offensive tackle Jason Smith(notes) also will be tested for possible concussions on Tuesday.

Fullback Mike Karney(notes) was to undergo an MRI on his neck. Offensive tackle Alex Barron(notes) (mild ankle sprain) and running back Steven Jackson (lower back strain) had more minor injuries.

Spagnuolo was hopeful guard Richie Incognito(notes) can return after missing three games plus the bye week with a foot injury.

Will somebody please enlighten me as to when he got his fractured leg, his strained groin, and his concussion? I watched that whole game, and he played it right until the final play. I don't how he could have played the entire game in that condition, he didn't look like he was playing injured, and I didn't see him take any truly punishing hits. Furthermore, there were no injury time outs for him.

I agree, maybe it'll all b.s. and it's just an excuse to seat him.

Scott U and Shoo, Shoo: LA sucks because we showed your Cards the door this year, and even though we did'nt do much after that, you were still watching us come play off time. As for losing 2 NFL teams, the Raidaaaas were never a SoCal team and never intended to stay. The Rams are a true LA team. They have history here and retain a good following. They were taken from us by a overrated showgirl who had here husband killed to get the team. She knew nothing about the game, just as the two benificiaries do now. This team is not going anywhere without a change of venue. It's not Bulger or the line, it's not the coach or the attitude. It's ownership and operations and the inability to draft appropriatley. It's time to sell, as you know they will, and fire everyone in the front office. And ideally bring them back to where they belong. The new stadium is waiting!

They can't just say "out for season". The Rams aren't going to the playoffs...so not like he's going to help them any when he comes back in 6 weeks.

Bulger is too small to play in the NFL; what is he - a buck 80? The Rams DO need to be done with him, and I agree that they may as well let Null play and see what they've got.

...As for the whole Bulger thing....

The guy goes in to be evaluated for a concusion and comes out with a fractured leg. Riiiiigggghhhhtt. What really happened was that Spags finally grew a pair and told Marc that he's finished. In order to let Marc save a little face they are calling is injury a "broken leg". That way he wont have a concusion on his record when he looks for somewhere else to work.
Bulger is done in St. Louis. Period. He isn't hurt at all.

I agree with the Jackson comments. The only reason he is getting the praise we hear is because THERE IS NOTHING ELSE TO TALK ABOUT!! If he was a part of a balanced squad he would be ripped apart for not being able to find the endzone. 5 years with 1000+yards...blah blah. Take away 2006 and all the guy has done his entire career is get the Rams within field goal range. Once he's in the redzone his running style hits a brick wall. He's a great workhorse and yardage monster but NOT the type of running back that you design a whole team around.
Anyone that disagrees is just plain blind.

Meet Me in St. Louis, you don't know what you're talking about. Steven Jackson has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the last 5 seasons and is on pace to go over 2,000 from scrimmage. He is the ONLY threat on their offense. Everyone knows he's getting the ball 25-30 times and they still can't stop him. As for your busted draft scenario, the Rams had Marc Bulger coming off a pro bowl season, they didn't need Jay Cutler, they needed a DB and they picked the highest rated one.

Stick to baseball, cause you don't know sh*t about football.

    Edited version:

Need to send the Ram Boyz back to SoCal where they belong! They were borrowed by the STL and won a SB, but the time has passed and it's time to get back where they are appreciated and an owner will spend some real money on them. Say good bye STL, the stadium is being built and the real Ram fans are waiting.

They rode that horse as long as they could -- bet they'll drop him by season's end. Too bad -- he had some talent and potential, just not the right place to be. Doesn't it seem like there's always a core set of good teams and then the rest are just filler -- kind of like a good rock album. They can't all be elite, so some of them have to be like the Rams, the rest are in the third tier.

I agree with post 114. I've been tellin people all year we, the Rams need to let Null play. We aren't going anywhere. They're allowing all these other kids to play, why not. Before even considering drafting a quarterback in the first round next year, see what the guy has. It can't hurt, and it wouldn't mean they're necessarily throwing in the towel. I don't see how he gives you any less of a chance to win than you had with Bulger/Boller. I root for the Rams but can't understand why he can't get in a game. We're 1-9, you've got to be joking...But oh, I do not agree with packing them back off to L.A.

The Rams front office needs to dig a hole and jump in it! Take Bulgers' sorry az with you. I have never seen a QB go down every single time he gets hit.

The Rams are simply paying the cost for being snowblind - Bulger over Warner, give me a break...Bulger over Jay Cutler, eat dirt. Then they had the nerve to trade Bruce, Holt, Pace, and a whole slew of starters. If we had the 1st ten picks in the draft we still couldn't manage a first down. Our real problem started when the Rams front office refused to place Lovie Smith at the helm of our team and Mike Martz in charge of the O! What we need are better decision-making coaches and front office people however, the Rams as an organization won't have a winning season for maybe 5 years and that's only if they make the right decisions.

    11. Denver (from St. Louis) - Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt
    15. St. Louis (from Atlanta through Denver) - Tye Hill, Cb Clemson
    ...LMAO and you should too!!!!!!

The Rams are one of several NFL teams right now that have no direction. Very weak on both sides of the ball. In this age of free agency, who have they picked up?

Why would they NOT put him on injured reserve? They're not winning anything regardless of whether he comes back this season.
