Bulger not speculating on future

  • Print

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Some in St. Louis wonder if Marc Bulger(notes) has played his last game with the Rams. The quarterback says it’s too early to speculate about his future.

Bulger will miss at least three weeks and could be out for the remaining six games with a fractured left shin bone. He was on crutches Friday at practice and said there will be plenty of time to determine if he is back in 2010.

“We’ve got six weeks to go in this season and whether I come back this season, we’ll see,” Bulger said. “We’ll have plenty of time on the offseason to make those (other) decisions. I don’t want to be a distraction in any way. We’re thinking optimistic around here.”

Kyle Boller(notes) will start Sunday as St. Louis (1-9) hosts Seattle (3-7).

Bulger injured the shin two weeks ago in a 28-23 loss to New Orleans, and it became worse in Sunday’s 21-13 loss to Arizona. The magnitude of the injury caught Bulger by surprise.

“We checked it out (after New Orleans) and the ligaments were fine and when you check knees you look at the ligaments,” Bulger said. “You never think in a million years that it could possibly be a bone. You get sore knees every week in this league.

“If you’re not willing to play with pain, there’s guys right behind you willing to take your job.”

Boller has played in three games with two starts this year. He has completed 49 of 86 passes for 481 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

“He’s played a lot of football in this league,” coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “I think the guys around him feel real confident.”

Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said Boller has been solid filling in for Bulger.

“Kyle has played a lot of games in this league and he’s won a lot of games in this league,” Shurmur said. “I anticipate he’s going to out and have a nice day.”

Bulger said he hopes to be on the sideline Sunday, providing some mentoring for rookie third-string quarterback Keith Null(notes).

It was another injury that gave Bulger the starting job in St. Louis, replacing Kurt Warner(notes) in 2003. Warner had led the Rams to a 40-17 record as a starter and to two Super Bowls, winning one. Along the way, Warner earned two MVP awards and a Super Bowl MVP.

Bulger has had his moments, guiding St. Louis to a 12-4 record in 2003, and went to the Pro Bowl in 2004 and 2006, when he threw for more than 4,000 yards. After that season, the Rams rewarded him with a six-year contract worth $65 million.

But a team in decline and injuries have limited Bulger’s effectiveness since. It doesn’t help that Bulger has played under five head coaches and numerous offensive coordinators and quarterback coaches.

Bulger knows the quarterback is always going to take much of the blame when things go wrong.

“I think you could go to any team in the NFL right now, well maybe 30 teams, and the quarterback is getting grief one week or another, whether it’s a Pro Bowler and the team is 9-1 or 8-2,” Bulger said. “It comes with the position and I know it sounds like a cliche, but you know what your getting yourself into. It’s part of your job.

“If you can’t take it, then become a punter.”

For now, Bulger isn’t ruling out playing again this season.

“I’d love to come back and play a couple of games,” Bulger said. “At the same time, it might not happen.”

The Lambs passes on Rodgers? I'm embarrassed to be a Ram fan anymore and ready to switch to soccer!! Still supported my team even though they left Ca. Won't be a Raider, Charger or Winer fan so what am I left with? I'll devote Sundays to golf, screw it!! Holt saw the writing on the wall, why shouldn't I?

Hey 147 bozo p99 I agree with you, Bulger has to go. I've never liked him, couldn't figure out what evrybody was raving about. But, who are you talking about that was not good at Ohio St? Bulger went to West Virginia which, evidently, only produces QB's with issues of 1 kind or another.

From an objective point of view(I could care less about the Rams, other than Jackson on my fantasy team) I think too many STL fans are too focused on if Bulger should be replaced or not. What STL needs is an offensive line, imagine S-Jax with a half decent line, than you'll see if Bulger is worth keeping(I'd say he's upper 2nd tier QB, 10-15th in the NFL.) I commend both of them for playing behind the "Swiss cheese" OL, wondering what injury awaits them next because of it......just an outsiders opinion.

I don't believe anyone answered Mac B. Holt was cut by the lamb chops. I was surprised they let him go for nothing. He is not the receiver he once was but he is better than all the other WRs on that team.

Bulger sucks, plain and simple. he has never been more than a good backup level of talent and wasn't all that great at Ohio St. I cringed a few yrs back when the Rams passed on Aaron Rodgers to remain loyal to this wimp. Give him another huge extension after not proving anything during his career. He had success when he took over Warner's team but done nada since. Time to dump his ass and get a real QB.

I have been a Rams fan since the late 70's but I don't live anywhere near LA or St Louis. So with their horrible records for the last 2 (now 3) years they don't get much coverage where I live. Does anyone know why Holt left?

Bulger was definitely limping during their final possession. Regardless of whether he should be "finished" in St. Louis, the claims that he is "faking" the injury to cover for being benched is absurd and absolutely uncalled for.

The worst part of this is that Bulger could have been a very good quarterback (as he showed before the team went into the tank) if management hadn't been utterly incompetent. If Warner hadn't been shown the door, his career would have been over by now. In a weird way, he must be thankful.

Meet me in StL ... stick to the baseball forums cause you sound like a tool here. All those vets you cheered while jumping on the bandwagon are washed up. Holt had one good game, against us, and hasn't done squat the rest of the season. The rest of those guys are all hurt. Two years before Cutler was drafted Bulger was in the pro-bowl. The year Cutler was drafted Bulger was the alternate QB for the pro-bowl. We didn't need a QB in 2006.

To all the LA fans ... start lobbying for an expansion team to fill that new stadium cause the RAMS are in StL to stay!!! Moving the team to another city doesn't make them better, you get the same players. Also, this season we did fire the entire front office, head coach, assistant coaches, got rid of old vets, and spent millions on upgrades for the dome. The owners also are selling the team and the interested buyers want to keep the team in StL. Keep calling yourselves "fans" when it is obvious you're not following the team and the reason you lost TWO teams already!!! It's been almost 15 years now since the move, just cause Oakland got their team back doesn't mean you automatically will, too. Enjoy watchin the NBA

Will somebody please enlighten me as to when he got his fractured leg, his strained groin, and his concussion? I watched that whole game, and he played it right until the final play. I don't how he could have played the entire game in that condition, he didn't look like he was playing injured, and I didn't see him take any truly punishing hits. Furthermore, there were no injury time outs for him.

I agree, maybe it'll all b.s. and it's just an excuse to seat him.

Scott U and Shoo, Shoo: LA sucks because we showed your Cards the door this year, and even though we did'nt do much after that, you were still watching us come play off time. As for losing 2 NFL teams, the Raidaaaas were never a SoCal team and never intended to stay. The Rams are a true LA team. They have history here and retain a good following. They were taken from us by a overrated showgirl who had here husband killed to get the team. She knew nothing about the game, just as the two benificiaries do now. This team is not going anywhere without a change of venue. It's not Bulger or the line, it's not the coach or the attitude. It's ownership and operations and the inability to draft appropriatley. It's time to sell, as you know they will, and fire everyone in the front office. And ideally bring them back to where they belong. The new stadium is waiting!

Bulger is too small to play in the NFL; what is he - a buck 80? The Rams DO need to be done with him, and I agree that they may as well let Null play and see what they've got.

...As for the whole Bulger thing....

The guy goes in to be evaluated for a concusion and comes out with a fractured leg. Riiiiigggghhhhtt. What really happened was that Spags finally grew a pair and told Marc that he's finished. In order to let Marc save a little face they are calling is injury a "broken leg". That way he wont have a concusion on his record when he looks for somewhere else to work.
Bulger is done in St. Louis. Period. He isn't hurt at all.

I agree with the Jackson comments. The only reason he is getting the praise we hear is because THERE IS NOTHING ELSE TO TALK ABOUT!! If he was a part of a balanced squad he would be ripped apart for not being able to find the endzone. 5 years with 1000+yards...blah blah. Take away 2006 and all the guy has done his entire career is get the Rams within field goal range. Once he's in the redzone his running style hits a brick wall. He's a great workhorse and yardage monster but NOT the type of running back that you design a whole team around.
Anyone that disagrees is just plain blind.

Meet Me in St. Louis, you don't know what you're talking about. Steven Jackson has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the last 5 seasons and is on pace to go over 2,000 from scrimmage. He is the ONLY threat on their offense. Everyone knows he's getting the ball 25-30 times and they still can't stop him. As for your busted draft scenario, the Rams had Marc Bulger coming off a pro bowl season, they didn't need Jay Cutler, they needed a DB and they picked the highest rated one.

Stick to baseball, cause you don't know sh*t about football.
