Raiders re-sign OL Langston Walker

  • Print

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—The Oakland Raiders re-signed offensive lineman Langston Walker(notes) on Wednesday and waived fullback Oren O’Neal(notes) with an injury.

Walker was a second-round pick by Oakland in 2002 and spent his first five seasons in the NFL with the Raiders. He left to sign a five-year, $25 million contract with Buffalo before the 2007 season and was cut by the Bills the week before this season started.

The Raiders need help on an offensive line that has been hurt by injuries to left guard Robert Gallery(notes) and right tackle Cornell Green(notes).

Erik Pears(notes) started three games, first at guard and then at tackle last week. Pears has struggled, committing four false starts already to tie for the league lead in that category.

The Raiders had three players starting at different positions last week than they had in the opener, with center Chris Morris(notes) moving to left guard, backup Samson Satele(notes) starting at center and Pears at right tackle.

“We’ll see if he can get in and learn the system, and see if he can do our system,” coach Tom Cable said. “He certainly wouldn’t be able to do it this week. Maybe in a week he’ll have a chance to, get enough practice.”

Walker’s weight is down from 380 pounds to about 362, Cable said, which is still very big for a zone blocking lineman who needs to be athletic enough to get upfield to make blocks.

Walker came in for a tryout last week and the Raiders waited a week before deciding to bring him back for a second stint. Walker has mostly played in a power-blocking scheme and will have to learn the zone system employed in Oakland.

“It’s slightly different, but I think I can do it. I’m athletic enough. I guess if I couldn’t they wouldn’t bring me in,” he said. “I think it’s more about learning the playbook. That’s the biggest issue standing in front of me. Different words and signals and nomenclature, and different quarterback.”

Walker, who was born in Oakland and played in college at nearby California, said it was difficult to leave the Raiders two years ago but he couldn’t turn down the money the Bills offered in free agency.

“It was real tough. This has always been my childhood favorite team, but business is business,” he said. “We all know how the NFL is.”

Oakland has struggled mightily on offense the past four weeks, scoring just two offensive touchdowns and failing to reach 200 yards of offense in any of the games. The Raiders joined last year’s Cleveland team as the only ones in the past 32 years to go four straight games with less than 200 yards of offense.

The Raiders are averaging just 3.3 yards per carry and allowed six sacks in last week’s 44-7 loss to the New York Giants.

“It will be good. He’s a great player,” left tackle Mario Henderson(notes) said. “It’s good any time you can add a player this skilled to the team.”

O’Neal was a sixth-round pick by the Raiders in 2007 and began this season as the team’s starting fullback before losing the job to Luke Lawton(notes). O’Neal then injured his ankle and was waived by the team. If no team claims him on waivers, he will be placed on Oakland’s injured reserve list.

Lawton missed practice Wednesday with an ankle injury, leaving Gary Russell(notes) as the only healthy fullback on the team. Rookie tight end Brandon Myers(notes) could get some time at fullback this week if necessary, Cable said.

NOTES: WR Chaz Schilens(notes) practiced for the first time since breaking a bone in his left foot Aug. 18 in a joint practice against the 49ers. He was limited, but will do more each day this week and could play Sunday. … Gallery did not practice and is questionable this week after breaking a bone in his left leg in Week 2. … DE Greg Ellis(notes) missed practice with a sore knee but will play Sunday.

THE ANSWER HAS BEEN GIVEN TO US Raider Nation. In Monte poole's column about disgruntled Raider and Warrior fans a guy named tahoeruss came up with the perfect way to display our feelings. EVERYONE goes to the tailgate party and jams their a $$ es off. You know, while the Blimp and News choppers circle overhead providing local and NATIONAL coverage of our cause. Just before kickoff a horn honking parade exits the parking lot after having enjoyed an awesome tailgate, and skips the game. After all,why eat decent food and injest copious amounts of good alcohol only to throw it up watching another JRuss debacle? What do you think raider Nation? I think it will work! And if it doesn't ,well ,can't bit c h about a great tailgate can you?

why are some of us raider fans willing to just blindly follow every decision al davis makes...no matter how horrible they are??? it is ok to be a raider fan and hate the product that is being put out there you know!! yes al is a great football person and the nfl wouldnt be what it is today without him...but even during our most recent super bowl apperance and our last winning seasons w/ gruden he wasnt even making personal decisions...bruce allen was!! sadly that is the one position that needs to be replaced above all and until al stops making those personal decisions, raiders will not be relavent in the nfl and we'll just be the laughing stock. i'll just give one example...lets take the first round of this years draft. everyone knew DHB was a mid to late first round pick. so if he was "our guy" al should have traded down and we could have got more later round picks in return and still got DHB even though i would have taken Maclin but thats beside the point. we'd still have "our guy" and also some picks for say...maybe...some offensive linemen??!!!?? hmmm thats just one of many weird moves made in recent years. but i guess over paying talent is what we do...and at least we are the best at that!! oh well. im just glad the raiders showed their true colors early and didnt get our hopes up. glad b-ball season is starting!!!

After we cut him, Buffalo signed him for what , 25 mil garranteed, on a 60 mil$ contract, and that lasted 1 year before they figured out he was their weak link !!!! And now he's back!!!! IF he signed for the minimum, ok!!! Anything more and it's a waste, until proven otherwise !!!! OMG !!!!! A VERY FRUSTRATED RAIDERFAN4LYFE !!!!!!!

Come on Glen, Al Davis should have retired 20 years ago. He's been pushing around the coaches and players for a long time. Ask Marcus Allen about that !

Al Davis is a football god. If you say otherwise then you are not a Raiders fan and this means you Coach07

Without Mr. Davis there would be no Raiders for you to even root for. There would be no Silver and Black because he invented it.

They'd be gold white and navy and known as the Oakland Senors.

Plus, Davis is smart by starting Russell every week... Since the team is so bad he figures he can save a load of cash when Russell either suffers a career ending injury behind the no talent line or some wannabe fan takes a pot shot at him. Brilliant!

To all you Raider fans...I turned 50 this year..been a fan since I was 7 years old and saw them in the 2nd Super Bowl. I've been through the glory years and the down years and I'll die loyal to the "pride and poise boys" (not that they play like it anymore)

The only way to get the stink off the team, sad to say, is for the "old man" to die...get in new ownwership and some football minds that haven't been hibernating for the last 25 years. Someday soon, a new day will dawn for the Raiders and I'll stay loyal till then..even with an overpaid QB who is fat and can't make basic throws, an overrated WR who has what 2 catches this year? No coaches who teach, (except boxing apparently), linemen who don't block, etc, etc....the glory days will return eventually..hang in there.

If you want to see why certain people start, just check out their salaries. Bush would be my first choice, he's making less then D-Mac and Fargas by butt loads. When you're shelling out so much money for those two regardless, I'd want to work 'em too. Or maybe rookies are just paid too much. As for the O-line not being part of the problem, are you on crack? Only one lineman started in their original position. If that doesn't have an impact on run blocking and pass protecting, not sure what does. Not sure why Javon Walker isn't starting, then again his 09' salary is probably less then Hey Bay.

    Go Raiders! *cough*

haha, this is guy supposed to give Jamarcus Russell, the first overall draft pick, more time to throw the football? Get real guys. the problem is russell. not the o-line. So get rid of russell, then you'll be a 11-5 team. Otherwise, it's another 2-14 season for the raiders. nice. raider nation is a losers' nation.

This is a lot of bull*hit, these rookies are not completely ready for this type of play or competition. What Tom the "Cable Guy" needs to do is make sure the receivers he has, anyone that has been in the league more than one or two seasons should be in the game at all times until they end up hurt or unable to perform. Makes no sense to not play them when your paying them to sit and watch how these rookies are trying there best just to run a route correctly. Now enough is enough, when is anyone going to get a clue and let Bush get the rock, he has yet to drop the rock. Let Mcfadden catch the rock from the outside, it seems that once he gets away from the back field and able to elude the defense he maintains his handling skills. We'll see as time progresses.

Raider fan for life. These discussions are pointless. When Al expires we will then begin to clean up the mess he has created. We're like a bad economy once "the poison" ( AD) is gone it will take a few years for a new exec. to get the right GM, right coach who has a modern mind set for football. We should of taken Cutler instead of Huff a few years ago.Take a look at our draft picks over the last 20 years and you'll see when Al's decline began in did not begin over the last couple of years. He takes Mc Fadden when we already had Bush and Fargas, should of taken Dorsey. Then we take Heyward-Bey when we should of taken B.J.Raji. Instead he's banked on Tommy Kelly the most ridicules contract and signing in the history of the NFL. Seymour will leave after this season which will show the waste it was to trade a No. 1 pick on him.Jamarcus Russell is not the answer. He should of sat on the bench for the first few years.Garcia just recently commented on how the work ethic in the organization lackluster another problem we have. So I will wait patiently until he's gone then will start from scratch

Hey Raiderzfan, You are right the coach does all the fighting (like hitting his asst. coach), maybe some of those people that were fighting in the stands (over 100 arrests) can join the players on the field (the one's that were fighting each other) and hold a beer swigging, piss in your pants, wife beating, pucking brawl in the black Ho, I mean hole. You mentioned your inability to stop the run, what about your inability to pass, pass block, & pass defense? Oh, that's right you have a savior in R. Seymore (I haven't heard anything positive about his play since the first game). As far as "Raiders rule", HAHAHAHA they only rule the toilet and the bottom of the league, take it like a man and quit whining. Even the 49ers are laughing at your team, didn't I read that the 49ers were making fun of the Raiders in their 2 day intersquad practice in Napa? HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Raiders suck the LITTLE one, because they choke on the big ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe it's the big diamond ear ring that's messing up their play, or do the pretty boys keep them in their locker when on the field? At least one of the rookies needs to learn, for 1 catch doesn't cut it. So put in Javon Walker. Oh, but is he another one of them pretty boys? Didn't he get beat up and his jewelry stolen in Vegas? I have no respect for pretty boys who wear ear rings. Oh, and that mink coat Jamarcus has worn? If that ain't a pretty boy, what is? This is not the Oakland Raiders. This is the Tinseltown Rachels. Real men don't dress like women. I had Raider season tickets in the 70's. The only thing that makes me happy is to remember the good old days. These days make me thoroughly disgusted. I feel so desparate I'd root for Garcia to do the Jeffy (when he runs around really fast). They better play good on offense this week, for I saw the opposing defense isn't very good. You don't want to make me a Niner fan, do you? I have respect for coach Singletary. He's tough. But tough isn't breaking another coach's jaw and then denying it. Real men fess up. Real men do what it takes to win, baby. Real men are committed to excellence. Real men are not too stuborn not to change and stay with Russell. Come on, Raiders, don't you want respect? Your fans are thrashing you. You need to get right.
