McFadden haunted by last week’s fumbles

  • Print

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—Darren McFadden(notes) has been haunted by his performance in last week’s loss to the Denver Broncos, reliving every detail of his three fumbles that helped contribute to Oakland’s 23-3 defeat.

“It’s been hard for me this week because I’ve been thinking about it,” McFadden said Wednesday. “That’s something you just have to try and shake it off, come back from it in the next game. It’s all about having a short memory.”

In a performance that left enough blame to go around to the entire team, McFadden shouldered his share for his miscues.

McFadden fumbled on the second play from scrimmage when he lost the ball on a screen pass. Center Chris Morris(notes) recovered that one, sparing Oakland a turnover. He fumbled on a run up the middle in the second quarter, getting saved when Zach Miller recovered it.

The most costly fumble came in the third quarter two plays after Denver turned it over deep in its own territory, giving Oakland a brief bit of hope. McFadden ran a sweep around right end and lost a fumble just before going out of bounds, spoiling Oakland’s best opportunity for a touchdown all day.

“It wasn’t any big hits or anything that made the fumble,” he said. “It just was me not being ball conscience and having my arm all the way tucked in.”

McFadden came into the league with a reputation as a fumbler. He lost 9 of his 23 fumbles in three seasons at Arkansas, but many of those came on kickoff returns or as the quarterback in the wildcat formation.

He did a better job with ball security last season, fumbling just three times as a rookie and losing only one of them. But after three weeks this season, McFadden has four fumbles in 47 touches for the worst rate of any player with at least 20 touches.

Perhaps just as concerning has been McFadden’s inability to break off the long runs the Raiders expected when they drafted him fourth overall out of Arkansas in 2008. He has only three carries all season that have gone for more than 10 yards, with his longest being just 15.

McFadden is averaging just 3.6 yards per carry this season. He has failed to reach 100 yards rushing in his last 14 games since doing it for the only time in his career against Kansas City in Week 2 last season.

With defenses keying on the run even more than usual because of the struggles of JaMarcus Russell(notes) and the passing game, the Raiders have had trouble running the ball early this season.

“We have to run the football better,” coach Tom Cable said. “We have a very talented backfield. So that falls directly on my shoulders, being able to run the football, because that’s what I know how to do.”

The Raiders are 20th in the league in rushing at 103.3 yards per game. Oakland ranked in the top 10 the past two seasons, relying almost entirely on the running game.

With the Broncos stacking the line last week and the Raiders playing from behind almost from the start, there were few opportunities for running. But this week, the going could be easier against a Houston defense that is allowing an average of 6.3 yards per carry through three weeks.

“We haven’t been in position to where we can stay committed to the run,” backup Justin Fargas(notes) said. “We put ourselves in some tough situations to where we can’t really do what we do so I think the main thing is just trying to stay on track, commit ourselves to the run game, because that’s where our strength is, and don’t waver from that.”

Notes: The Raiders brought back kickoff returner Justin Miller(notes) and placed DB John Bowie(notes) on injured reserve with a knee injury. … WR Chaz Schilens(notes) did not practice and does not seem likely to return this week from a broken foot. … S Hiram Eugene(notes) missed practice and is questionable with a calf injury.

Mike d I didn't mean to disrespect you, because i do think that you have a football mind, but you have to admit that your comments have been redundant . When drew brees was with the dolts they didn't trade him because he was doing great, but now he is a class act. I believe that sometimes you have to go through adversity to appreciate your accomplishments. J.R. didn't win the national championship because he was a bust.

Mike d i agree he does have growing pains in the nfl. It's just that i am waiting till the end of the year to make an assesment. you may be right , but i do know that it takes time to be a good q.b. in the nfl..

    BTW RDR Dave,

Jamarcus is not my number 1 TP (top poosy) in NFL. The current top POOSY (word license taken without permission from LCFER) award in my book goes to Terrell Owens, who IMHO is the top POS in the league. He is a team destroyer simple as that.

But Jamarcus is closing in quick. I am really OK with him simply for the following observation: He does not claim to be anything he is not. His problem is THAT OTHERS Claim him to be something he is not. I dont find him at fault for that. fair enough? he is simply taking this to the bank, shame on mgt for that.

Now I know you have given a point that Russell has done well 2 points late in 2 games etc, and that you have given him more time. At some point if you are a knowledgable football fan, something will have to change: either Russell has to be consistently better, or you admit he is bust. I am only at the bust point quicker than you, because I have a couple years on you with the guy from the days at LSU.

    Raider Dave,

i am sorry that some of the comments made about Jamarcus Russell and Raider issues may get you mad, however I am willing to debate any of the issues on the merits. So go for it if you wish!!
I am a passionate NFL fan and I post on most of the issues of the day for any team. I happen to be from New Orleans, and lived in Dallas during the Jimmy Johnson SB runs, so those 2 teams are of more interest to me, particulary the Saints. I follow players from or whom have played in my home state such as the Mannings, and of course our LSU alum Jafarce-us Russell.
However I was a Raider fan back in the day when the Saints were so bad, and the Raiders were the cream of the crop, the long ball kings, etc etc. I am just amazed at how things are now and some of the decisions that go into how that got to be that way.
As far as you invite to go to my page, thank you I have, and will continue to post on raider or any page that I wish as these are open to all. If you find a problem with the comments, lets simply air them out and discuss the facts of what the matter is at that time.
I do understand the pain of this, as remember I am from New Orleans and there does not exist a worse NFL history.
So hang in there things change, and stop taking any issue out on others!!
Good luck to you and Raiders, things will get better the moment Russell collects bench time!!

I totally agree with laker007raider.. you really cant put all the blame on Jamarcus... he is not getting much help from the two rookie receivers... (btw- why is Javon Walker on the sidelines!! he is the only receiver with experience out there..)as if another QB can do better in this position.. if us Raider fans are looking to point the finger blame Al Davis!! I’m still pissed he fired Lane Kiffin last year.. (and watch and see Lane turn Tennessee around.. just like everyone else who leaves the raiders to do bigger and better things) he is still trying to make all the draft picks and does not let the head coach run his team... we are never going to win until he dies in the booth!!! Win Lose or Tie Raider till I Die... or till Al Davis dies...

Its hard to put the blame on one person. Russell is having a terrible year, and its impacted on the fact that its only his 2nd year as a starter. The receivers, while good for rookies, are just rookies. The line, while a ton better then last year, is only average. Stopping the rush has been emphasized for the last 3 years, and still no results. Management overpaid a few players in the last 3 offseasons. Bad PR has hit the organization for the last 7 years as well (Gannon's banning from the stadium, Walker getting beaten down in Vegas, Cable punching an assistant, Kiffen and Al fighting over nonsense, Art Shell coaching and the list goes on). In truth, bad football has been going on for the last 7 years. I think its foolish to think that this year would have been different. And the fact that some say Brad Gradowski is our quaterback savior, tells you how bad its gotten. I'm an ever faithful Raider to the end, all I can do is hope that the team gets better. Can't be bad forever. And all that talk about the Raiders being worse then the Lions in the last 7 years means nothing. The Lions and their fans would take that heat if they had just 1 superbowl ring. Same with the Bills, the Browns and any other organization that has never had a franchise in the big dance. Like em or hate em, everyone knows the Raiders!

The thing about the coaches and Russell is this, the fans see Russell on game day for 3 hours or so, and it is painfully obvious that he does not have the field "presence" and QB generalship to lead a pro team.
The coaches are with him several hours EVERYDAY going over each play and drill etc etc repetitiously, so they see this guy and how he thinks feels acts, etc all day all week, and still choose to put the product on the field.
Do you think he is a good practice player, where during the week he plays smart and savvy and is accurate in practice and then just looks like a novice on Sunday. No- he is dumb all week, the guys know it who are close to it, and so far have refused to honor their obligations to the team, the fans, etc. Grow some ballz and take care of business. You have such a loyal fanbase of rabid fans, and it sucks to put the Raider nation through this, when you have options which would take you in better directions. Good luck on a quick resolution.

Haha... JaMarcus Leaf! Now that's funny, but increasingly more apparent to everyone BUT Cable and Davis. When do you say when with Russell and yank him??? Raiders fans should've been shoving that question down Cable and Davis's throat after the 2nd week OR LAST YEAR... The guy has had plenty of opportunites, they should have moved him to offensive line last year:) Yeah... Cable the run game is your stong point, but not if you can't open it up by passing. Russell closes ALL DOORS on all possible run holes by not being consistent OR even a real threat... Teams play the Raiders from the fifteen up to the line of scrimmage with 9 out of 11 players keying on the RB's/Short pass. You can't even tell if the Raiders have a deep threat anymore because their passing game has been so extinct for so long... If I were a coach of anyother team, I would give any receiver dropped by the Raiders a second chance because they really never got a first chance... Who knows maybe they have been sitting on another potential Randy Moss... BRADOWSKI could not only give the Raiders good chances to win, but I believe might even get them close OR in the playoffs. However, if wannabe coach Davis and his assistant Cable sit him another week it might be just too late...

    Prediction:

Russell has a decent game soon, and all the faithful come on to harass the Russell naysayers.

That could happen, BUT over the long haul you have already seen what you are gonna get from this guy. Do not let a decent game or a couple strong throws change the inevitable outcome. It may only delay it, but will not change it. This happened at LSU every 4th week or so, for a couple years, and in between the team won with defense, special teams, and other highly skilled players. Meanwhile the Russell marketers were busy dreaming up schemes like having him throw 70 yards on knees for the scouts, and guess what it worked!! 60 million worth of thse potatoes!! GO FCKG figure.
raider fans, sorry to see the pain of this, only hope that leaders cut looses soon enough and move on towards greener pastures.

RDR Steve - I understand your pain, but I will never leave "The Nation". It's like a disfunctional family. This team has been a part of life so long, Silver and Black is all I know. I'm so fustrated with the coaching staff, especially our Q.B. coach who I might say is'nt doing a DAMN thing to improve this BUM Q.B. of ours. He has a chance to go from a BUM to a well dressed Brady. "And I can't stand the Haitriots". Russell was supposed to be working hard this off season with his receivers and he even hosted his own mini-camp. What the hell happened! This guy is a professional football player. The best of the best coaches, doctors, physical trainers and analysts are supposed to by this BUM'S side the whole time. Where is his support system. There's no reason why this BUM can't hit the side of a Barn. I'll try to continue drinking my Sam Adams every Sunday without throwing it up and hope for the best. DAMN!!!

Just to put things in perspective since everybody seems to like to compare Jamarcus to Marc Wilson.

Marc Wilson, if considered one of the worst qb's in franchise history, managed a 31-19 win loss record as a raider. He had a 68 passer rating and 52% completion average.

So if Marc wilson is to be considered garbage, then Jamarcus, whose stats are beyond worse that that, well, fill in your own adjective here.

Suffice it to say, Jamarcus Russell might very well be the worst quarterback in the last 20 years, compounded by the ridiculous salary he's recieved. And lucky us, he's a raider.
