Heyward-Bey remains confident despite struggles

  • Print

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes) has done nothing in the first half of his rookie season to quiet the critics who questioned why the Oakland Raiders drafted him seventh overall ahead of many more accomplished receivers.

Brought in for his breakaway speed that Oakland hoped would revive the vertical passing game, Heyward-Bey has only five catches for 74 yards and no touchdowns in his first eight games as a pro.

“I haven’t made the plays I wanted to make, but I’ve definitely been solid just looking at my grades that come out of the game. … I’ve been very solid. There’s always room for improvement as a whole receiving corps. We’ve been all right. We’ve been all right.”

Oakland’s receivers have once again been one of the worst groups in the league, catching just 28 passes the entire first half of the season.

But coach Tom Cable last week singled out Heyward-Bey’s performance in the previous two games as one of the highlights of the first half. Heyward-Bey had three catches for 38 yards in those two games, hardly the production expected out of a top 10 pick but better than what he had done in the first six games.

The Raiders drafted him ahead of receivers like Michael Crabtree(notes) and Jeremy Maclin(notes) in part because he was the fastest player at the NFL combine. The pick was roundly criticized but the Raiders defended it, saying that Heyward-Bey’s experience in a pro-style offense at Maryland would make for an easier adjustment to the NFL.

But that has not been the case as Heyward-Bey has failed to develop a chemistry with quarterback JaMarcus Russell(notes) and failed to match the numbers put up so far by Crabtree and Maclin.

Maclin has caught 25 passes for 337 yards and three touchdowns for Philadelphia, while Crabtree has 14 catches for 167 yards despite missing five games in a contract holdout.

Heyward-Bey just has the five, including none on passes that have gone more than 21 yards in the air—what was expected to be his specialty. Heyward-Bey said he didn’t have any specific numbers as his goals this season.

“I didn’t come in thinking any crazy numbers or anything,” Heyward-Bey said. “I just want to help this team win. We’ve only won two so I’m not helping.”

The Raiders have started a pair of rookies at receiver all season, with fourth-round pick Louis Murphy(notes) lining up opposite Heyward-Bey. While Murphy has better production that his rookie teammate with 16 catches for 232 yards and a touchdown, he has dropped six passes and has let mistakes linger and bring his entire performance down.

Murphy said the bye week came at a perfect time as he works on his adjustment to the NFL and expects a strong second half starting with Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“It’s like being on a merry-go-round and it’s spinning real fast, you’ve got to hang on,” he said. “So it’s starting to slow down, starting to get adjusted, starting to get my game, playing together, and just my preparation for the game, settling and getting adjusted to the NFL.”

The rookie receivers will get a boost this week with the return of Chaz Schilens(notes) from a broken foot that has sidelined him since training camp.

Schilens struggled for much of his rookie season a year ago before breaking through with six catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns in his final two games. Schilens had just nine catches and no scores his first 14 games and hopes to see similar improvement late this season from Oakland’s rookies.

“They’re both confident guys,” Schilens said. “They’ve been out there for eight games now and I feel like they’re making improvements, now it’s all about making plays and continually growing. It’s not accepting what you did last week as being good enough, making plays, being assignment smart, all that stuff. And they’re doing it. They’re working on it.”

NOTES: DE Greg Ellis(notes) did not practice while recovering from minor operations on his knee and shoulder. He still could play this week if he can return to practice by Friday. … Cable has not decided on his starters at WR or RB for this week.

Al Davis need to stay out of football operations for awhile. For the teams sake, not his. The drafting of JaBust and now darrius heyward-bey is a joke. DHB has 5 catches so far this year, Michael Crabtree caught 6 in one game already this year. If Al Davis is so impressed with speed he should sign track men only for a lot less money. If they bust, no problem. 5 years, 40 million for Darrius is crazy.

should have drafted BJ Raji The Run defense would have been better. I wish Russ would work on his game but after seeing his wide outs bump into each other against the Chargers it can't all be his fault.

How can anyone criticize Heyward-Bey or compare him to Crabtree or Maclin? He is a RAIDER! How can he possibly be successful? We wont know if the Raiders were right in taking him over the others until they get a good, or at least not horrible, QB and O-Line. Maclin has Mcnabb, Andy Reid and Desean Jackson, Crabtree has a Singletary and Alex Smith(who isn't horrible) and Vernon Davis.

Exactly M. Davis. They are wrong more often than they are right and they always take exception to the Raiders because they hold their own counsel and to not join the collective scouting group. It doesn't always pay off but at least Al always knows he got the guy he wanted. Maclin and Crabtree are good examples. They both play in spread offenses that are basically 4 wide outs running freelance patterns trying to get open. Very few college teams have enough talented players to cover everyone thus inflated numbers. One play Kiper kept showing for Crabtree was a lone DB with no safety help . Of course when Crabtree takes one step downfield he starts backpedaling and Crabtree cuts and runs a quick slant for a completion. Nice play but he isn't going to get that in the NFL. Kiper's aow words are his own downfall. He said when you are looking at film on a guy you never know if this is as good as he will be or if he can take it to another level. Every team takes players and they just don't know how they will do

Rosencrantz...I noticed this year that either Kiper or McShay got pissed that the Raiders were not following their recommendations. They are not Owners, GMs , Coaches, or even a waterboy of a football team. Analysis is one thing and what a player does on the field is another. I believe that Kiper picked Leaf over Manning too.

Looking for some good news about Darrius Heyward-Bey?

How about 16 passes targeted, 14 receptions. No. 11 was a one-handed snag near the sideline. One of the misses was on a low pass, the other could well have been a pass interference penalty on Chris Johnson, with the ball falling to the ground.

I'm sure tired of all these fans with their Al lost, I hate Al and so on. #189 if you are no longer a Raider fan fine. So long and thanks for all the fish! Bey if you read the latest from camp is doing fine and the more good outings he has the more he will relax and keep getting better. I knew Crabtree was a headcase and I watched Maclin for 3 years when they played The Colorado Buffaloes in the Big 12 and thought then he was getting more hype then he was worth. Look!! the spread offenses in college inflate numbers. How many colleges do you think are deep enough to cover 4 receivers for a whole game. Bey will be fine and do what the Raiders want him to do stretch the field. Sorry if you thought you were a fan of some team that drafts straight from Kiper's list but in the long run he has had a lot of busts as had everyone they just don't talk about them. So have fun with whatever team you chose. I got a hunch you will wait for the SB winner and jump on their bandwagon cause you don't have a clue what it means to be a fan!

I have been a diehard Raider fan since 1972 and Al has pushed me over the edge with his out of control lunacy. He has no clue what is going on in today’s NFL… the picks they (used to be we but is now they) chose are outright jokes. A developmental project at receiver and a super developmental reach at safety with the 2nd pick. The Raiders are so deficient with talent and they choose projects who must be developed slowly with nary a guarantee of potential results???? What really concerns me is that this will likely destroy Jamarcus Russell (although I admit he already appears to be a bust) at QB as the plan was to get him a weapon. What a weapon in someone fast with iffy hands whom needs time to bring along to maybe be a serviceable 2nd receiver? Al will force “Yes Man” Cable to throw him out there from the get go and you’ll get to watch Jamarcus force the football his way as he won’t be able to get any separation and if the ball does somehow get to him he’ll prove can’t catch the football. What a weapon!!! I don’t even want to waste any time on that 2nd rounder whom doesn’t have a chance… Michael ‘can’t tackle can’t cover’ Huff will even look good in practice with this stiff. I do project Heyward-Bey to have his career year this coming season with 12 catches and 1 TD so he won’t be as disappointing as most think. Meanwhile I project that 2nd rounder to be placed on the developmental squad and the only time he’ll see a NFL field will be late this season when all is lost anyway. Cable will be fired at the bye week and you remaining Raider fans can enjoy the 0-16 season so that they can shock the world and take Usain Bolt with the #1 overall pick next year (hopefully he’ll be worth doo-doo). What a joke this once proud franchise has become… I can believe I’m saying this but as of now I ‘m rooting for the Raiders to get pounded and pounded hard every week… meanwhile I kinda like the Jets now that they got the right Ryan takimg over the helm… probably going to be my new team.

history shows us that the raiders go thru a lengthy slump after dominating the afc west for several years in a row. i know this because ive been a raider fan since lamonica was the starting qb. they are due to do it again soon. just need to get the raider attitude back. the raider fans have been robbed of 3 superbowls in the last 13 yrs. now that a= hole is no longer the commissioner of the NFL, maybe the league will let us win.
