Raiders cut quarterback Jeff Garcia

  • Print

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—Quarterback Jeff Garcia(notes), who was signed by Oakland in the offseason to push JaMarcus Russell(notes) and serve as a mentor to the former No. 1 overall draft pick, was among 22 players let go by the Raiders on Saturday.

The decision to release Garcia means Bruce Gradkowski(notes) and Charlie Frye(notes) will head into the regular season as Russell’s backups.

Garcia, who has 116 starts in 10 NFL seasons, signed a one-year contract with Oakland in April and acknowledged then the idea of being a backup was tough to handle, which may have factored into the team’s decision to release the 39-year-old quarterback.

“There was some talk about how he would fit but the best way for me to approach it is the other two played so well and we are committed to JaMarcus as our starter,” coach Tom Cable said. “Whether or not (Garcia) was comfortable in a role as a backup, it is what it is.”

Oakland also released kick returner Justin Miller(notes), defensive tackle Terdell Sands(notes), safety Jerome Boyd, cornerback Darrick Brown(notes), defensive end Greyson Gunheim(notes), wide receiver Jonathan Holland(notes), tackles Seth Wand(notes) and James Marten(notes), linebackers Slade Norris(notes), David Nixon, Morlon Greenwood(notes) and Chris O’Neill, fullback Marcel Reece(notes), running back Gary Russell(notes), punter Ricky Schmitt(notes), tight end Darrell Strong(notes), guard Mark Wilson(notes) and defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti(notes).

In addition, the Raiders placed center John Wade(notes), cornerback Michael Hawkins and safety Rashad Baker(notes) on the waived/injured list.

Garcia missed two weeks of training camp with a sore left calf muscle and didn’t play in the Raiders’ first preseason game. He returned in mid-August and played sparingly in the preseason, compiling a quarterback rating of 67.1 that was the lowest among Oakland’s four quarterbacks.

Following Thursday’s 31-21 preseason loss to Seattle in which he went just 3 of 6 for 12 yards, Garcia admitted being uncertain about his status.

“I haven’t played a whole lot in the preseason, so I don’t think there’s ever really a comfortable feeling, especially when there are so many problems to be fixed it seems,” Garcia said. “All I can do is give everything I have to give and try to better myself every day and try along the way help my teammates better themselves. That’s all I can ask of myself right now.”

Cable said the play of Gradkowski and Frye in training camp and in the preseason helped determine Garcia’s fate.

“Both of those guys, Bruce and Charlie, bring a lot to the table in regards to JaMarcus,” Cable said. “They understand they have to be there every day and push him just like Jeff would if he was here.”

Cable declined to say which of the two would be the Raiders’ No. 2 quarterback for the season-opener against San Diego.

Miller set a franchise record with two kickoff returns for touchdown in 2008 but struggled as a backup cornerback this preseason. His departure likely means rookie Nick Miller will handle the kick return chores.

The only other surprise among the Raiders cuts was Wade, the veteran center who signed with Oakland last season. Wade was expected to push Samson Satele(notes) for the starting center job but had missed much of training camp and the preseason with a stinger.

Instead of going with Satele, though, Cable said the Raiders will start Chris Morris(notes) at center against the Chargers in the season-opener. Morris was a seventh-round pick in 2006.

Norris was Oakland’s fourth-round pick this season. The team had released sixth-round pick Stryker Sulak(notes) before training camp.

Ralph - so from the Orton reference I gather you are Bronco fan.
WTF were they thinking letting Cutler get to the Bears. I would probably take Russel before Orton, at least he will make 2 or 3 good plays per game. This was a case of the new HEAD HONCHO in town McDaniels having to soothe his big EGO by riding Cutler out. What a big FCKUP that was. Hell, you dont just grow these FCKRS on trees. A successful NFL QB is defintely worth you taking a hit to your ego to make peace. Sign of times to come, because when they get beat and Orton plays poorly, the team knows Mcdaniels could have done this different, and he may lose thm early. It will be a slippery slope if that happens.

I agree with you on the holdout thing, 9ers outta cut Crabtree, make him reenter draft as malcontent, and next year he will be dropped lower because of sorry ass me first attitude. He was pissed because Bey got better money, and he feels he is better than him, so he wants to be paid the way he is as if he were drafted in that spot.
BUT he FCKING was not drafted in that spot, the 10 spot gets 10 spot money, FCKNG period.
I dont think Singletary will put up with that @#$%, he knows how to be a winner, and Crabtree should be brought out bACK AND HIT WITH A STUPID STICK.

    LCFER-

now those were decent knowledgable football posts, preciate that.

The Raiders have a lot of good pieces to a strong team. Russell will kill it though. maybe he can learn to be a really good NFL QB, I mean after paying him 60M- they will be coaching the FCK out of him to get their moneys worth, maybe he can get better, sometimes it takes a few years. Terry Bradshaw had the same @#$% on him in his first couple years, but he was a serious competitor, and worked his ass off to get better, Russell appears to not give a rats ass about the whole game.

Brady Quinn was a better pick, and he fell all the way to 10 spot, coulda saved davis about 40 Mil that he could now help pay seymore with.

If Russell gets banged up, the Raiders might actually get to see their best chance when either of the 2 backups come in. Booty from USC, and Chase Daniel from Missouri were both available last week when the cuts were made, but Davis is so welded to his choices, that he simply will not let go of it. Hell, Culpepper was better than Russell, and a lot cheaper.

Good luck, season opener tomorrow night.
Are U ready for some FOOTBALL!!

mike d #272,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i understand you have the insights to JR"s LSU
tenure . dont get me wrong , i definatly was not a supporter of the
JR pick . i thought our pick was to be Brady Quinn. Quinn was all the hoopla in the raiders rumors and quite frankly i liked what i saw in Quinn .I am still
not convinced by a country mile about JR . I felt about his holding out , the
same way i feel about Crabtree and the niners . these two should have felt
priveledged to even be in the NFL . As far as i am concerned , JR ultimately
slapped the raider organization in our silver n black face .And yes we were
the fool to even entertain paying him 60mil , let alone actually pay him. yes
i am bo dummy , i see how slow he is at learning ,,,,,c'mon 2 1/2 seasons?
sh!t he should have been making those crucial passes , yes by now , he
should know how to get out of his own way ! because we paid him that big money , its not up to me to cut the umbilical cord . I have to roll with the punches!
I am not defending JR . i am defending my whole team . JR's inner clock
could prove to be his own hatchet man !

now Im going to give you some friendly advise,as far as Ralph_RA is concerned,
he is somebody that is not considered very healthy in the mind and
quite possibly infected with a mental defficiency ! you will accrue more grief
conversing with him, by many , many posters , along with some of the fans of denver! Quite frankly he is the sole reason of my rage to people talking sh!t
about the raiders. good luck to you and the saints , this season !

yep, I put a little on him, and he came out swinging defending the turf. How do you guys know each other?

He knows it, and I have been telling him some more, that their QB Russell is a fat dumass. Davis picks this multiple burger eating fool 1st, pays him millions, and watch what happens. Uh, nothing. Nothing at all. I was familiar with his habits before he got his pro money, watch now, comes into camp out of shape, UFB. The funny thing is is that LCFER knows all this but still fights on it. I give him credit for diehardness. I will make a trophy for best backing of most fcked up organization, and send it over.

Dude you need to check out the Chiefs blogs, if you want to fight with people about your Raiders. I went checking out stuff on Russell reporting to camp out of shape etc, and google came back with all kinds of stuff pictures of him in an inflated uniform, pictures eating a 10 pound burger, etc all from the KC Chiefs people. I could not believe the stuff they were dogging the RDRS on. Ya'll got some history there.
Also with Denver, too. Damn, how many are there??

    U must be dreaming.
I will give you that Rivers is good,no doubt.

But Drew Brees is in a totally different class. He has that something that only a few have. Moxie, winning passion, winning internal character, whatever you want to call it. He just has the "IT" factor.

Case in point: Rivers took over for Brees in Chargerland and they did not get better. Brees went to Saints, and the sorry bastards go the NFC championship game in lickity split. If Brees were still in SD- he is talented enough to have all the other injuries and distractions seem less important.

I do love the weather in SD though!

Look he is who he is, no matter the race.
I hope he does well, and becomes a good NFL player, that's what you guys are paying for, and deserve. In college when he got banged up the team did better when he was out.
I would like to talk to you guys in 3 years after you have had this play out a little more.

I doubt that very seriously, sounds kinda racial to me. Like he's black therefore he can't possibly be a Q.B. unless we make it simple for him
and just have him hand off..............
