NOW calls for Cable to be suspended

  • Print

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—The National Organization for Women called on the Oakland Raiders to suspend coach Tom Cable while the team investigates allegations he has a history of violent behavior toward women.

NOW president Terry O’Neill praised the Raiders in a statement for undertaking a “serious evaluation” of charges made by Cable’s first wife, Sandy Cable, and former girlfriend, Marie Lutz, that the coach physically abused them at various times during their relationships.

But she said that Cable should be suspended while that investigation proceeds. The Raiders had no comment.

“This is the National Football League. Boys and girls around the country, as well as many women, look to the leaders of the NFL as our role models,” O’Neill said in a phone interview. “Why would the NFL tolerate having a man who admits to having battered his wife.”

Cable has acknowledged striking Sandy Cable with an open hand more than 20 years ago and said it was the only time he’s ever touched a woman inappropriately. Marie Lutz accused Cable of assaulting her as recently as last January, but Cable said previously he was cleared by police of any wrongdoing in that case.

“I take the accusations very seriously,” O’Neill said. “What you have is a man who seems to be a person who habitually uses violence to get what he wants. That’s what batterers do.”

O’Neill said she has not contacted the Raiders or the NFL directly. Cable said Thursday he did not believe pressure from outside groups would influence what the team decides to do with him.

“I think it will be handled properly,” he said. “I’m going to leave it at that right now.”

The NOW statement was first reported by USA Today.

Fire him for being a crappy coach, his lack of character notwithstanding. This guy's a moron for having put himself in these circumstances, The Raider's need to quit protecting this idiot and do anything to improve their image.

It's amazing that this guy got away with BREAKING a man's jaw, but now you have women who either DID NOT prosecute this man, or failed to do so, and he will have more problems with that due to the public and political pressure of NOW! I do not condone any of his past problems, and more than Cable, it shows the type of mistakes our legal system makes daily! If Cable were an NFL player, college football player, or a different coach: he NEVER would have gotten away with that behavior. Part of it is the Raiders organization too! California law enforcement / legal system gets a thumbs down for quickly dismissing earlier allegations without the situation going to trial!

The Cable guy has a talent in slapping so use it. That fat piece of s-word needs a slap on each ear for not paying attention and a kick in the ass for not moving. The Cable guy can also deliver a quick kick just for added emphasize. Go Raiders!

To dl29wpb_fl (post 935): my comments regarding obama's children were related to anything in the so called "Mainstream Media" only, such as the news organizations NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, Fox News, CNBC, entertainment programs as Jay Leno, David Letterman, Bill Maher, etc. It is an established fact that David Letterman carried on a hit campaign against Sarah Palin and her family long after the Election was over. Why? If a person has nothing to fear from someone, he/she does not comment on that person. Letterman was the most notable, with jokes about her and her daughter almost every night. If you have evidence that people on the internet said things about the obama children, ok. I wasn't one of them because I disagree with obama's politics, not his children's school behavior or personal habits. I point out that not once, did NOW speak up in defense of Sarah Palin, telling Letterman, Leno, etc. to back it down. NOW is an organization that only stands up for women whose political beliefs mirror their own. If you have any information that NOW has ever come to the defense or praise of a Conservative woman in or out of politics, I look forward to that information.

Maybe Cale should start slapping aroung JaMarcus Russell for his habitual problem of throwning the ball to the defense. Or the front office could offer the seahawks Bush in trade for a receiver who is actually worth throwing the ball to, the seahawks are deep at the receiver position, or ask for Seneca Wallace who is a proven backup Qb ( who just happens to have thrown more td's this year than the raiders qb's as a team) and is also a better receiver than any of the raiders starters at this point. NoW has a good point in suspending Cable, it actually might improve their chances of winning.

Who Cares? It's people making problems where there are none. When people look at sports figures as heroes then they need to get a grip on reality. it's a job, They should train their kids to look towards someone else for a change. Now cares about an incident that happened 20 years ago? I don't support spousal abuse but I think it's blown out of porportion.

But for you to say no one made any negative remarks about him or his children, you must be living on another planet... Go to any message board and see all the closet and cowardly internet bigots that make their rounds on here and then rethink that statement!

Well joseph r, there was an unrelenting attack on Mrs. Palin from the time she was nominated, which included insults against her children. As I recall, there were no such jokes made about the obama children, nor was there any intellectual curiosity about obama's background, but there were plenty of people from the associated press running around Alaska trying to find out if she had ever received free flowers from any businesses there. I knew that if I used Sarah Palin's name, I would draw out a comment from some liberal hater who probably knows nothing about football but probably has a membership card from NOW. You do have a membership card don't you joseph r, or are you an honorary member? Tell me, joseph r, are you another liberal hack afraid of Sarah Palin? The way you people attack her, you must be, isn't that right, joseph r?

With the recent firing of Steve Phillips at ESPN. Should we ask that ESPN be investigated for creating this environment where these young interns are preyed upon? Harold Reynolds. Others have mentioned Mike Tirico. Woody Paige just won a suit against him for sexual harrassment when he was on Cold Pizza.
The Steve Phillips Affair; she got all Fatal Attraction up in here. But somehow it was sensationalized. No one asked why does this keep happening at ESPN? Where's NOW?

So let's get political. Like many sports fans, we are tired of some nefarious group trying to make some meaningless point on the sports pages. We follow sports for entertainment. Has NOW called for David Letterman to be fired? He's a person of much higher profile. He's person with much more influence than Cable. It doesn't work unless you want to sacriface one of your own.
Last week, we had the Larry Johnson gay slur incident. Could any of these groups respond to this? Did it create a backlash? Wasn't that the worst environment to have the vote on gay marriage in Maine? Doesn't the backlash hurt whatever ;point or movement these people are trying to advance? Check out the Maine vote against gay marriage. the pictures the coverage everything is skewed towards a gay right left wing agenda. The people from Maine to California who keep voting it down over and over are not covered. Please answer me this. Don't you think the backlash created by the LJ incident helped defeat the gay marriage bill in Maine? I do.
    This is the same garbage.
