Raiders coach Cable under microscope

  • Print

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—When Tom Cable was hired as interim coach of the Oakland Raiders last year, owner Al Davis memorably whispered to a subordinate that he did not know much about him. Davis needed a media guide biography before introducing him.

Just over 13 months later, the Raiders have learned quite a bit about their coach—much of it troublesome.

From the allegations this summer that Cable assaulted defensive assistant Randy Hanson and broke his jaw, to other disturbing charges that surfaced in the past week that Cable has a history of violence toward women, the portrait being painted of the Raiders coach has been mostly negative.

Less than two weeks after being cleared of possible criminal charges in the Hanson case, Cable was accused of assaulting women over the past two decades. His first wife, Sandy Cable, and former girlfriend, Marie Lutz, told ESPN that the coach physically abused them at various times during their relationships.

Cable acknowledged striking Sandy Cable with an open hand, but disputed allegations that he punched her. Cable said the altercation happened more than 20 years ago and was the only time he’s ever touched a woman inappropriately.

The latest accusations led the Raiders to issue a statement earlier this week saying they would undertake a “serious evaluation” of the charges. The statement ominously noted that employees had been fired in the past for misconduct, raising the possibility Oakland could be ready to make a second straight in-season coaching change.

The players say Cable is holding up amid the allegations and calls for his suspension or firing, staying focused on his job.

“He’s a steady guy,” offensive lineman Robert Gallery(notes) said. “He loves football and he doesn’t really get fazed. Obviously he’s had his own issues, right or wrong, he’s dealt with them the right way. He’s here to win games. He’s doing everything he can in his power to help us win games. He hasn’t changed a bit.”

Cable met with Davis earlier this week to discuss the allegations and the struggles of the football team, but said his job status was not discussed.

“We didn’t even talk about that,” Cable said. “We talked about, like you’re supposed to, the team, personnel moves, the second half. Those are not issues for us to discuss. There’s no need to right now. Right now it’s about trying to turn it around and get us on track.”

That is no easy task as the Raiders reached the midpoint of the season with a 2-6 record for the sixth time in the past seven years. This has been the darkest stretch ever for the once-proud franchise, with losses on the field being rivaled only by the controversy off it.

Since going to the Super Bowl following the 2002 season, the Raiders are an NFL-worst 26-78, giving them as many losses in the past 6 1/2 seasons as the team had in Davis’ first 20 years with the franchise.

Cable is the fifth coach during that stretch, having taken over on an interim basis from Lane Kiffin four games into last season. Wins in the final two games of 2008 helped Cable keep what he called his “dream job.”

His first full season at the helm has been more of a nightmare, with the team’s struggles and the accusations he has faced. When asked to grade his performance at the midway point of the season, Cable gave himself a “C-plus, at best.”

“I’m not an excuse guy, but I think not having enough people healthy on offense has really hindered us,” he said. “I think I have to take responsibility of being 2-6. So that’s the bottom line.”

The Raiders have been without starting receiver Chaz Schilens(notes) all season, and missed running back Darren McFadden(notes) and starting offensive linemen Gallery and Cornell Green(notes) for big chunks.

But it’s hard to put all the blame for the lowest-ranked offense in the league on injuries. Oakland has scored just three touchdowns in the past six games and failed to reach 200 yards of offense in five of eight games this season. JaMarcus Russell(notes) has failed to develop into a franchise quarterback.

The Raiders drafted Russell first overall in 2007 because his strong arm was supposed to revive the vertical passing game Davis loves so much. He played sparingly as a rookie because of a lengthy holdout, and was not allowed to open up the attack much last season.

But with the addition of speedy rookie receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes), this season was supposed to bring back memories of Daryle Lamonica to Warren Wells or Ken Stabler to Cliff Branch.

Instead, Heyward-Bey has only five catches midway through the season and the Raiders have shown no ability to throw the ball deep. According to STATS LLC, Oakland has thrown just two completions and five interceptions on 33 passes that have gone at least 21 yards downfield.

“We have got to push it in terms of throwing,” Cable said. “We have to have three or four substance plays throwing the football every day to win in this league, and you can’t shy away from that. You can’t say you’re going to run it every time. You have to do that in order to win in this league.”

Despite all the struggles, Cable has remained optimistic, saying that the players and scheme were in place and it would just take confidence to get the Raiders going again.

He has insisted the team was close to breaking through even during its roughest patches, and remains steadfast in his belief even now.

“I think you can see the top of the mountain now, but we’re not there yet,” Cable said. “But you can see it now.”

The question remains whether Cable will still be there when the Raiders reach it.

Five coaches in 6.5 seasons...I wonder why the Raiders have no continuity?

You know, seriously, I think if you had NO head coach,, and just told the guys to show up on Sunday ready to play, draw the plays up in the dirt, you could count on one or two wins each season. Imagine of they had a coaching staff stay the same for three seasons.....

How about some patience, and let the Raiders try keeping a head coach for a season or so???

All I have to say is, quit whining you @#$%y little women!! If the abuse was so serious, why didn't you call the police. That is why there are Domestic Violence Laws! To protect the victims of battery. Dont come in now and @#$% a moan about something that might have happened 20 years ago just because you heard some baby of an assistant coach tried to get some money out of the Raiders organization before he cried "Battery!" charges, which were also bogus.

As much sh!t as I talk to you raider fans I have to give you a small modicum of credit for sticking with your team. Now whether that is because you're too stupid to do otherwise is a discussion for another day. And seeing as how this was your bye week and JaMarcus didn't have a chance to blow another game for you, I can only tip my hat to you as you wallow in the foul stench of another 10+ loss season. Enjoy your time in the black hole of the NFL. As always the raiders suck!!!

Okay Mr. Al Davis, can we stop the bleeding here, Russell has got to sit his ass down and learn how to play football, this is a big disgrace to the sport. Every Sunday I watch the team go from good to wtf, and when I see a player wide open I pray Russell can hit him, then he just screws it up. These players get paid alot of money t do what lose? I'm sure somebody in that locker room is tired of sitting down looking at the same thing day after day, besides a pay check for losing. Maybe someone needs to light a fire under their butts and tell them, we're a professional football team, we get paid to win games, not blow em... Hey Guys get a clue, it's the win column we want to be in, not the bottom cellar....

My only question is wtf is Cable waiting for to bench dumbass @#$&*(@* Russell!!! The guy sucks and Al just wasted millions on him im not a football expert and even i knew that russell would suck...they should have drafted any other quarterback or traded for a damn decent one since Russell is not even a "decent" QB. Cable you do know you have backup QB's right???

it'swhateva you do make a valid point but it still starts with Russell. He's last in and first out usually to the facility during the week. He needs to be spending all the time he can with the team and a little extra with his young receivers. I am loving what Murphy has shown, and Chaz has alot to offer as well, DHB should be #3 at best. And bring in Tim Brown to help mentor and teach these guys a few things about what it takes to be the best.

We need a G.M. for starters, and until JaMarcus takes control and becomes a leader throughout the week we will not be successful. We have alot of talent but until J-Russ makes his job a priority or we just get a real Q.B. we are destined to fail. Teams have proven recently if you have alot of pieces in place it does'nt take much to turn the corner ex. Arizona, Cincy, and Miami.

Right. Three people say this guy is violent and people think it is all a conspiracy against the Raiders.

No one needs to try and bring down the Raiders from the outside. They have plenty of people inside doing a much better job of it. Sad because I root for them.

And Russell? After 3 years he finally figured our he needs to put in extra time?

In my opinion after watching the last game Russell appears to be improving. The more glaring problems were the pass protection, pop warner play calling, and half ass route running by the receivers. All the receivers need to toughen up and start worrying more about utilizing their spped to get separation rather than whining to the refs for PI calls. As far as the defense goes, I swore I heard a rumor in the off-season that Nnamdi was going to be allowed to shadow the oposing teams top receivers. That obviously hasn't happened. Every time some makes a catch it is on Routt or Tyvon, our 2 worst pass defenders. Why does Routt even see the field in any package? Give Holland a try or there has to be someone better out on waivers. Should have kept Fabian. And why doesn't Mitchell sniff the field other than on special teams? Did we not use a 2 pick for him? Shaunhessy looked good at least.

It feels good to know there are people that have the heart to stick with my Oakland Raiders. and I believe Tom Cable, is the best chance for the team to turn around it's misfortune. He is showing strong leadership during this time of having a losing season while dealing with questionable accusations of violence, and the players seem to respect him for showing remarkable poise. And, he has put together a young team with tremendous upside, so the potential is there. Obviously there's work to be done, so it might be a minute. But, if the team is going to recover from these rough times, then it makes sense for a coach who's been through the rough times with the team to be there in it's recovery.

We, the Raider Nation faithfull, just have to ignore the naysers and hang in there.

    Go Raiders!!!

Been a Raider fan for 37 years. Will be a Raider fan for the next 37 years too. Grew up in the Oakland area, been to more games than i can count.

Hear me when I say that the Raiders are actually worse off right now than the Saints(Aints), Bucs ever were. It is an absolute EMBARASSMENT to the orginization, the die hard, life long fans that have supported this once proud, now DEAD orginization.

Its going to be a LONG time before we will ever return to respectability so all you young Raider Fans might as well get used to it. Lets see whos got the brass to hang with this mess that the NFL has come to know as the Oakland Raiders. As painfull as it has been the last 7 years, I know i will be there. Will you?

The tree has rotted from the top down! Last year they had the chance to draft an intelligent, mature and poised quarterback in Brady Quinn. Sure Jamarcus Russell was appetizing, and yes he did win the ND-LSU game, but don't forget he was playing on a much more superior team. The "big arm" was not matched by maturity or any form of "commitment to excellence". In fact this hold out and hat grotesque diamond baubble in his ear is a testament to a person who is full of himself, and his performances are full of something else. If Al Davis wanted another defensive end, he could have had Howie Long's boy, Chris. The guy at quarterback is way behind the play when he releases, and any average corner or safety can close on his passes without much effort. Does he grease up his hands before the game? I never saw a QB fumble the ball so easily. In short, this guy is a BIG project, and probably will never be worth any of the noney he gets paid. No one would even want him in a trade. Big money, big joke. This ones on you Al.

as far cable goes " everyone wants to jump on the band wagon and kick the man when he's down " and as far as the season goes, we all know what the deal is 4-12 at best. Russell get's no respect from teamates or fans because of his inability to get the job the done. We will return to prominance again. any rats want to jump a sinking ship go ahead, we don't want you. The team has many problems from what I have seen watching them. When the qb is on target the wr's drop the ball when he is off target they are wide open. the o line blocks sometimes that's just on the offensive side. They need a qb bad I don't think russell has the desire to win. The defense blitz the eagles and then forgot how to put pressure on the qb ever since that day. I am like you have the speed why don't you blitz a lot more. but they still haven't stop the run I don't think they want to win
