Asomugha intends to play in season opener

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—Oakland Raiders Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha(notes) will wear a cast on his injured left wrist but isn’t expected to miss the team’s season opener.

Asomugha met with a hand specialist this week after being diagnosed with a chip fracture suffered during the first play of Saturday’s preseason loss to New Orleans. Tests confirmed the fracture and revealed cartilage damage in Asomugha’s left wrist.

“I’ll play in the opener, no problem,” Asomugha said Tuesday, shooting down reports that he might miss the Raiders’ Sept. 14 home game against San Diego. “If we played today it would be a big issue. I wouldn’t even be able to go if it was today. But it wouldn’t be an issue afterward.”

Asomugha, who signed a three-year, $45.3 million extension in the offseason, did not practice Tuesday and won’t play in Oakland’s preseason finale against Seattle on Thursday.

Instead, the Raiders will start fifth-year veteran Stanford Routt(notes) at right cornerback and Chris Johnson at the left side. Routt had been competing with Johnson in training camp for the starting job opposite of Asomugha.

Having Asomugha available to play against San Diego is a huge plus for the Raiders, whose defense has not played very well in the preseason. Oakland heads to Seattle ranked 32nd against the run and in overall defense.

In the 45-7 loss to New Orleans last week, the Raiders’ problems extended to their pass defense as well. Saints quarterback Drew Brees(notes) completed 14 of 17 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns while compiling a rating of 149.8 in less than two quarters of work.

Oakland coach Tom Cable thus welcomed the news about Asomugha and said the Raiders don’t anticipate having to take it easy with their best defensive player in practice.

“I’m not sure you really have to with what it is, in the cast,” Cable said. “He’ll be wanting to prepare for that the right way. Based on what we were told he should cast it and be able to prepare and be ready for the opener.”

Asomugha is expected to wear the cast for six weeks, longer than normal for a chip fracture but necessary because of the cartilage damage.

The injury occurred on the first play from scrimmage against the Saints when Asomugha went low to tackle New Orleans wide receiver Devery Henderson(notes), who was running a reverse.

“It doesn’t feel good,” Asomugha said. “When I went low I just got kicked.”

Notes: Rookie wide receiver Louis Murphy(notes) sprained his right foot while running a pass pattern and was unable to finish practice. Though Murphy is expected to play against Seattle on Thursday, Cable said veteran Javon Walker(notes) would start if Murphy is unable to. … Safety Michael Huff(notes) did not practice due to a quad injury and Cable is unsure if the former first-round draft pick will play in the preseason finale.

I would have signed Nnamdi for 6 yrs !!! He is a soldier ! He is probably the brightest spot for the Raiders. I have also heard that Davis has run out of cash, and is trying to sell another 10 % of the team. This is good and bad. The good is that he ( Davis ) gets less control and eventually ( If it continues ) could get squeezed out. Or die which ever comes first. The bad is we will not be able to get quality talent. I cannot understand why Al has signed some players for stupid cash. I mean Cmon Jevon Walker for example WTF is Al thinking ??? He has not done anything special at all !!! Until Davis goes the Raiders are and will continue to struggle !!!! PERIOD !!! His mind is gone !!!

An all around professional (Cal product) with lots of 'heart:' Asomugha may not be the most vocal leader but the way he pass-defends and displays approaching-initial-contact is very admirable. His timid teammates should show more 'guts' when it is time to 'man-up' and TACKLE! If we lose to anybody it should not be because we played like fking punks!

ok , ok ,ok we took it to dallas ,,,,a one point loss to s.f.,,,,,and then the blow out!
we did stink ! ok ,ok,,,,,,we had some players hurt . the calls against us , as
usual , most were a zebra take over against the raiders . but c'mon ,guys
,after all it is preseason.....i'd rather take the blow out hit now , than in the
real deal season . one more week of pre season , then 2 weeks of gel then the f cking opener against who ? thaaaats right , them b!tches from down south !
we will be ok ! we are the raiders and f ck all the rest !

Al Davis must go!!!! How could he let Nnambi get hurt. He is the worst owner a team could have. First he dislocates Morrison's elbow and now this. What's next, does he take a baseball bat to MacFadden's knees. Seriously Computer Geek let us know when you die or better yet we will already know because the national IQ will go up.
