Raiders emerge healthy from the bye

  • Print

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—The Oakland Raiders are finally healthy, at least on offense.

Running back Darren McFadden(notes), wide receiver Chaz Schilens(notes), left guard Robert Gallery(notes) and right tackle Cornell Green(notes) returned to practice Monday and are expected to play against the Kansas City Chiefs this week.

That would be a much-needed morale boost for an offense that has scored just six touchdowns in eight games and ranks 31st in total yardage.

“This is the healthiest this football team has been, there’s no question, particularly on offense,” Raiders coach Tom Cable said. “In terms of having them all back and into sync and the energy in the huddle and all those things, it was good to have them back.”

Gallery, the second overall pick in the 2004 draft, and Schilens practiced without restrictions while Oakland took a more cautious approach with McFadden and Green, who were limited.

Schilens hasn’t played this year since breaking a bone in his left foot during training camp. He was projected to be the Raiders’ No. 1 receiver but instead spent the first two months of the season as a spectator after having surgery while rookies Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes) and Louis Murphy(notes) started.

McFadden also had surgery, to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, while Gallery broke his right leg in Week 2. Green has been sidelined with a calf strain since Oct. 4.

“No pressure, but yeah we’ve got some work to do,” Schilens said Monday before practice. “Anything would be good for us right now. Confidence, have a positive attitude and get the passing game going a little bit so we can definitely get that going.”

Oakland’s problems on offense are wide-ranging.

Quarterback JaMarcus Russell(notes) is seriously struggling in his second year as the starter and has completed only 48.4 percent of his throws. He has just two touchdown passes and nine interceptions with a 48.3 rating.

Russell hasn’t got much support from the rest of the Raiders offense. The offensive line has allowed 25 sacks in eight games, the running game is averaging just 93.6 yards a game and no wide receiver has more than 16 receptions.

Cable acknowledged it’s natural to wonder what could have been had the Raiders had all four players healthy from the beginning but said it’s also pointless.

Defensive end Greg Ellis(notes), who had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee last week, was held out of Monday’s workout while defensive tackle Tommy Kelly(notes) was excused to handle personal business.

Earlier in the day Oakland signed defensive tackle William Joseph(notes) and released offensive lineman Paul McQuistan(notes), the team’s third-round draft pick in 2006.

Had enoough Raider Nation? As a fan of 42 years I sure as hell have! Some people started an online petition to Mr. Davis to let him know how we feel. i don't know if it will do s h I T but at this point ANYTHING is worth a try! check it out at messagetoal.com They take donations (why i'm not sure) but they are calling for the hiring of a General Manager , new Coach, Davis to sell the team and resign etc. Raider fans should check it out. It can't hurt. Last night there were @2700 people that had signed it so far. The goal is 50,000.

the defense is better than you think.

if your offense is generally good for a 3-and-out or turnover (which the raiders excell at right now), that's going to show up as terrible team defensive stats (total yards given up) compounded by all that comes with demoralizing the defense players and physically wearing them out.

if the offense improves, or at least sustains their drives better and stays on the field longer, i guarantee we'll all see a "miraculously" improved defense, even though it's just the same guys running the same schemes.

Dodge, our offensive line stinks. Our coach stinks. Our QB stinks. Our run defense really stinks.
I'm not ready to give up on Russel & McFadden. I think with good coaching, playcalling & blocking they will improve.
Fargas has proved his worth. Bush & Zach Miller are studs. Murphy's a keeper.
What the hell happened to Johnnie Lee Higgins? He has yet to show up this year.
Optimistically we might be able to pull off a couple more upsets (Denver, Baltimore) and finish 7-9, which might give Cable another year.
But does anyone think Cable for another year is a good thing? Not liking an assistant coach is one thing, but punching him out is both immature and unproffessional. He needs to stick to coaching the O-line.
Kiffin wasn't bad, he just wasn't ready for the pro's.

what we need to do is rebuild our offense because our defense is doing most of the work would you agree?

As long as The Raiders keep gambling on long shot coaches (Shell, Kiffin, Cable), inconsistant free agents (Kelly, Walker) and draft picks (Heyward-Bey, Mitchell) things will not improve.
Without good coaching and veteran mentors even "can't miss" prospects (McFadden, Russell) will flounder.
The only good moves we've made in recent years were re-signing Asomogha, drafting Murphy, signing Jeff Garcia and acquiring Seymore, though I think we gave up too much for Seymore. Derrick Burgess & a 2nd Round pick would have been better. And why did Garcia get cut??? So Russel wouldn't have any pressure to succeed?
I wouldn't mind if next years draft was entirely used on linebackers, offensive linemen & defensive tackles.
Oh and Al Davis, please fire Tom Cable. The guy can't even maintain control over his own temper, what to speak of an entire pro football team.
Please hire someone the players can respect & trust. Ex: Mike Holmgren, Bill Cowhrer, Jon Gruden, Marty Schottenheimer or Brian Billick.

Umh not sure how to respond to the idiotic writings of one mr charles g but I'll give it a try. First and foremost nothing I have ever written on this or any board could be called "dumbness". In fact my posts actually bring a level of intelligence that raider boards sorely lack. Secondly the number one pick is Clevelands for the taking considering they have to play in the AFC North. I don't see them winning anymore games this year. Third the Chiefs are going to stomp a black hole in your heart as the romp over the raiders on Sunday. Finally last I checked Matt Cassel's numbers are WAAAAAAY better than Russell's. So Mr. G I say to you...the raiders suck CHUMP!!!

    Go Chiefs!!!

Go Chiefs!!! 28-14 over the raiders. 250 yards rushing for Charles/Smith.
