Patriots cut WR Joey Galloway, TE Michael Matthews

  • Print

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—Joey Galloway’s(notes) brief stint with the New England Patriots ended Tuesday when the 15-year veteran wide receiver was released two days before the team leaves for London to play his former club.

Galloway struggled with the offensive system and was inactive the last three games after catching just seven passes in the first three.

“He’s had a great career and this is one of those things that just didn’t work out,” coach Bill Belichick said. “I don’t think it’s anybody’s fault or anything that you just pinpoint.”

The Patriots play Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where Galloway, 37, spent the past five seasons. He was the eighth player drafted in 1995 and spent five years with Seattle before playing four with Dallas.

He caught 689 passes, which was eighth among active receivers, for 10,777 yards and 77 touchdowns.

New England also released third-string tight end Michael Matthews(notes). He played the past four games after being traded by the New York Giants for a conditional draft choice in 2011 that the Patriots can keep because the undisclosed conditions were not met, Belichick said.

“He came in late and started learning the stuff from the start of the regular season after missing all training camp” with the Patriots, Belichick said.

Those roster spots probably won’t be filled before Friday, he said.

Two possibilities for those are tackle Mark LeVoir(notes), who was on the physically unable to perform list, and wide receiver Brandon Tate(notes), who was on the non-football injury list. Both participated in Tuesday’s practice, a walkthrough, and must be activated within 21 days or go on a list that would keep them from playing the rest of the season.

They’re almost certain to be back during those 21 days, but Belichick indicated it wouldn’t happen this week.

“I don’t know if a player, after a couple of days of practice, is going to be ready to play,” he said. “It’s a possibility, but I think it’s a lot to ask.”

The status of linebacker Adalius Thomas(notes) and running back Sammy Morris(notes) also was uncertain for Sunday’s game.

Thomas, a healthy scratch in Sunday’s 59-0 win over the Tennessee Titans for the first time since his rookie year in 2000, practiced Tuesday.

Asked if he was leaning toward activating him Sunday, Belichick said, “as we always do, we’ll activate the players that we feel give us the best chance to win this game.”

Morris didn’t return after hurting his left knee on the Patriots’ third offensive play against the Titans. Is Belichick confident he’ll play again this season?

“Sure,” he said. “If the player wasn’t going to be back during the season, then we’d place him on injured reserve.”

With Fred Taylor(notes) having missed the last two games following ankle surgery, the Patriots could be down to three running backs—Laurence Maroney(notes), Kevin Faulk(notes) and BenJarvus Green-Ellis(notes)—against the Buccaneers.

“We’ve gone into games with three running backs before,” Belichick said.

It’s the game that counts more for Belichick than the Wembley Stadium venue as the NFL widens its visibility with its third game in London.

“I’m sure it’ll be something we’ll all remember,” Belichick said, but “I’m just trying to coach a team. I’m not trying to solve the world’s problems.”

Ya, I'm excited to see what Austin does as the # 2 guy this Sunday. Crayton should never have to be a # 2. He's much better in the slot. I think we're still ranked # 9 in passing. I agree, Williams needs to pick it up. Maybe Austin's speed on the other side will help out.

Pedro, I'm not a Dallas fan, but I do think they are a good team. They lack serious leadership in the head coach position and consistency on the field. Romo does make alot of plays, but when you break it down the play wasn't as called in the huddle. Good players make good things happen. Great players go to Canton.

Yes, thanks to our running backs, Barber, Jones and Choice.
    Our wideouts?
    They've been so and so..
Williams is a bust. Crayton's okay. Austin had the one game against Kansas City and ppl thinks he's the next best thing, well he's not..
And Witten, he's talented, but his numbers are down so far this season..

True American, I stand corrected.. we do need a coach..
Ours is a joke and our quarterback.. ehh I'm still not convinced that he's that bad..
We will find out as the season goes on..
Only reason I say we should bring back Galloway is because he had some pretty decent years here.
Unlike, the big bust that I expected of Roy Williams..

Saints got enough weapons, but another potential downfield threat to add with Meachem, Moore, Henderson and Coulston in a 5WR set would be good....But I forgot we had Reggie Bush as well....Bush is NOT an NFL running back....He should convert to WR because I think he could be better than Devin Hester because he can run routes extremely well (yeah I said it Bears fans, but Hester is my boy and he IS doing a hell of a job)..... Bush to WR....That's scary - The reverse plays would be off the chain if the blocking gets set up right....Do it, Payton, do it now!!!!!!!

BTW... I never said the Broncos got lucky against the Chargers. They did however get a lucky break week 1. I said they were playing over their head. I dare any Broncos fan to say with a straight face that they think a team with Kyle Orton at QB can win everything. LMFAO!!!!

The fact is everyone on these posts has a tilted view... stop putting each other down for it. Practically everyone on these posts thinks their team is the s**t. SO what, let each person think that and stop acting like any team you don't like is a piece of crap. The fact is, The Pats and every other first place team deserve to be where they are in the standings whether you or I or anyone else likes them or not. I have teams I can't stand in the NFL... but, I don't put them down just cause there is an article saying they waived someone.

Hey #261... I'm a Bills fan and you sir, are an idiot...

What do you mean lets go Buffalo? Go where? Basement of afc east? They give NO reason to root for them, and because saps like you still cheer the team and buy tickets to go watch 6-3 home losses, is the reason nothing gets done.

people are all on here posting bout all different teams when it suppose to be on the pats lol.anyway i dont think it matters what team anyone like.someone said the pats beat the sorry ass titans thats the only reason the score was 59-0.thier record might show that but the basically have most of their pieces from last year, they r no team to sleep on.everyone gets on the skins for losing to the chiefs n lions but gotta understand they r teams as well with some decent talent.the raiders just beat the eagles who expected that, the skins beat the saints last year.never know could happen again doubtful.

DJM- your right no excuses with the Pats losing against Denver. Brady has had a tuff time winning in Denver and much credit goes to McDaniels and his staff. But now a little honesty on your part, if your a Denver fan can you honestly say that you thought Denver would be 6-0 under McDaniels? Were you one of those many fans especially after Cutler left that thought McDaniels was a shmoe like so many Denver fans did? Also welcome to Pats land cuz quite honestly your seeing the same team, the same scheme that the Pats have used the last 3 or 4 years now.

    Hey Preacher.....

"If the Pats had one more score of any kind in that Broncos game, they win." Wow..Captain Obvious everyone!!! Unfortunately for you the Pats did not get another score because Brady was under constant pressure..Face it the Broncos were the better team!!! and as for the Broncos getting "lucky" against San Diego?...umm only giving up 3 points in an entire half is not luck you bonehead...It is a great Defense!!!! look at the stats 10 Points gave up in the second half..(thats not in one game, that is for the entire Season, so far)...I don't think you can constitute that as Luck!!! Pats fans quit being haters...and suck it up the better team won..and will continue to win!!!

Too bad Galloway didn't work out. Seems like e just couldn't catch a pass from Brady. They just didn't click on the field.

I'm a avid Pats fan, but I also appreciate good plays and games. Denver and the Jets both played well and deserved to win those games. As I am sure with every fan, I just hope for more consistency with the referees. Sometimes I wonder what the heck are they thinking.

Example: The taunting call on Mayweather in the Denver game that led to the Broncos go-ahead score. The replay shows the ref throw the flag well before Mayweather did any type of celebration. Which leads me to wonder... Did the ref throw it for an non-pass interference then changed his mind once Mayweather did whatever? Seemed like a blatant game steering call from the official.

I've seen plenty of other calls against other teams that should've been no calls.

#262, you could say that about any team. If the quarterback hadn't thrown an interception, if the receiver hadn't dropped that last past, if this team had scored at any other time, they'd win. Fact of the matter is, all the plays that would've helped your team win didn't happen. In the end, the team with the most points wins, no matter what happened throughout the game.

All I said was that the Pats tanked at the end of the games they lost... not that they let anyone win. This isn't arrogance, it a realistic view of those games. If the Pats had one more score of any kind in that Broncos game, they win. And if the Pats had been able to complete a pass at the end of the Jets game, they would have at least given themselves a chance to win. You can say whatever you want about Pats fans being arrogant. It seems to me that the Pats haters are just as arrogant in the other direction. You don't like the Pats... fine, I probably don't like your team. All I'm saying is there is a reason the Pats are in first place all by their lonesome! Pats fans may be blind to their faults, but the Pats haters are blind to their talents as well! So if you can't admit that a team you don't like is good just because you don't like them, then maybe you're the arrogant one!
