Patriots miss Welker, have faith in Edelman

  • Print

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—Julian Edelman(notes) made an instant impression on running back Fred Taylor(notes) when the rookie and the 12-year veteran met at a Patriots preseason camp.

Taylor saw what many New England fans have seen since.

“I was excited,” Taylor said Tuesday. “I told a lot of my friends we have another young guy very similar to Wes Welker(notes) and you’ll remember his name.”

Edelman might be tough to miss in Sunday’s playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens. The former college quarterback listed at 6 feet but closer to Welker’s height of 5-foot-9 is expected to fill the slot receiver spot left vacant by Welker’s knee injury.

The Patriots practiced for the first time Tuesday since Welker was hurt on their first possession of Sunday’s 34-27 loss to the Houston Texans. An MRI done Monday showed torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee, NFL.com reported.

The Patriots refused comment on the results of the MRI. Welker’s agent, David Dunn, did not return an e-mail seeking comment.

Welker and Edelman are similar in size and style—catch a short pass then make sharp cuts to avoid defenders.

But the seventh-round draft pick who didn’t play wide receiver at Kent State has a very long way to go to come close to Welker’s accomplishments.

Welker led the NFL with a team-record 123 catches this season despite missing two games and almost all of the regular-season finale. His 346 receptions over the last three seasons are the most in the league. At times when opponents double teamed him, they covered Randy Moss(notes) with just one defender.

“He’s a great player and I know he’ll work hard to get back as soon as he can,” coach Bill Belichick said.

In training camp in August, Edelman tried to emulate Welker.

“People don’t appreciate how much he knows the game,” Edelman said then. “He gets in and out of his cuts. That’s what I’m trying to learn to do, trying to be like Wes.”

He got his first chance when Welker missed the second game of the season with an injury to his right knee. Edelman started and caught eight passes for 98 yards, but the Patriots lost to the New York Jets 16-9.

With Welker sidelined again the next week, Edelman had just three receptions for 20 yards, but the Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons 26-10.

He goes into Sunday’s game with 37 catches for 359 yards, but he’s still a rookie. Playoff experience, though, is irrelevant at this stage, Belichick said.

“I don’t think it matters,” he said. “In 2001, we didn’t have any playoff experience and we were OK. We had playoff experiences in other years, in 2005 and 2006. That was probably as much playoff experience as any team in the league. I think what it comes down to is which team plays the best on Sunday.”

The Patriots won the championship in the 2001 season in their first Super Bowl appearance in five years. Tom Brady(notes) was named MVP of the game, a stunning climax to his first full pro season. They didn’t get to the title game in the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Taylor was a rookie in 1998 when he rushed for 1,223 yards and 14 touchdowns for Jacksonville. Then he ran for 162 yards and a touchdown in a 25-10 playoff win over the Patriots.

To him, playoff experience is overrated.

“It only really matters this one specific game,” Taylor said. “The only experience you’re going to need is during that specific game, who you’re playing, how well you know them? All that other stuff, I think, is just hype.”

There’s plenty of that, especially with the focus on how the Patriots will manage without Welker.

On Tuesday, Belichick made it clear he was done talking about losing Welker and was focused on winning Sunday.

How will his absence impact the team?

“We’re over and done with that. We’re onto Baltimore,” Belichick said.

What about the field surface in Houston, which Belichick said Monday on WEEI radio was “one of the worst fields I’ve seen,” with soft spots in some areas and firm spots in others?

“We’re onto Baltimore,” he said. “We’re done with the regular season. This is the postseason. We’re onto Baltimore.”

Belichick’s players echoed that.

Asked if he had spoken with Welker, the usually talkative Taylor paused.

“I don’t want to get into the Wes stuff,” he said, “just because. But, yeah, his spirit’s OK.”

I'm sure Julian Edelman will fill in nicely for Wes. And we also have other WRs that catch the ball well from Brady. I know Randy Moss gets double-covered and is our speed/long yardage go-to guy. But humor me here -- I wan't some opinions. In this situation, with Welker out, wouldn't using Moss in "Welker-ian" type passing plays as a slot receiver work nicely? If double-coverage is attempted against Moss when he sets himself up in short yardage pass situations, the two guys covering him might just get themselves into a crowded situation which might then allow blocks against them by a couple of our offensive line guys.

But if Edelman is being double-covered, wouldn't that open up the field for Moss to receive short yardage passes and maybe even possibly gain MORE yards than Edelman? It might also confuse the opposing defense if Moss and Edelman switch roles every few plays. Just a thought. Yours?

Ravens need to get in there and bust up Brady's ribs, and double team Moss at all times. Hopefully it will be windy, and Brady won't just sit back there and throw up jump balls to him against the smaller Ravens corners. The refs will be in protection mode and will flag anyone who even touches Brady or Moss, so it will be a challenge either way. I know most people who aren't from Baltimore hate the Ravens, and we relish being the underdogs. Our team has a reputation for thuggery, rough play, smashmouth football, even cheap shots. I think the new coach Harbaugh is trying to change that image, but it's tough. The refs are extremely tough on Ravens, and will never fail to spot an infraction, but if we play good clean football we'll beat up a good but banged up New England team.

I don't like the Patriots, but I'm against the Ravens even more.
What a dilemma... why can't both teams be eliminated THIS weekend? That would be ideal.

Hey #63 Are you kidding me????

"POLLARD does it to "Cheat"riots again!!! Brady in '08, Welker in '09 !!!
Loved when he WENT DOWN with TORN ACL/MCL !!!

How can you wish that injury on any human being? Welker is a classy player who goes out hard every week, takes his shots and keeps his mouth shut. He represents everything a professional athlete should be. He is one of the best in the league, but do you see him acting like a moron during games and during the week of game preparation? No!!! He practices hard and shows up every play. #63, people like you are what's wrong with the world. You wish ill on others. You must have been the guy giving chop blocks/late hits and head shots when you played sports.

Oh wait. If you had ever played sports, you would never wish that type of injury on any player!!!! You are a JACKAS*

I have never gone to an article about a team I dislike to disparidge the team or it's fans. I come online and look for insightful articles and articles about the teams I DO like. Some of these people who constantly leave comments in Patriots articles are clearly having trouble dealing with losses that THEIR team suffered at the hands of the Patriots. We New England area fans have to be pretty happy with our teams right now. The Celtics are on top, the Red Sox are finally the perrennial contenders they should be, and the Patriots are one of the most ADMIRED and HATED teams in the league. I won't get into the Bruins but they are on there way...I think.

Those in the know, and those who've followed this team closely, know that the Craft Family runs this team with a lot of class. They are among the most respected owners in the NFL and they have provided their fans with a great stadium at their own cost, and a winning team. They also provide MLS for those who like soccer.

I'm not sure why fans hate Belicheck so much. He always speaks well of other teams in interviews and more importantly, he doesn't put up with infantile behavior from his players. Ochocinco would not get away with his ridiculous antics on this team. Terrell Owens would never make it. Watch the Patriots pre and post game interviews and aside from responding to stupid remarks from other teams, the Patriots players and coaching staff are always respectful and very rarely do they boast.

Jammed, you actually don't understand the concept of proof. The Pats owe you nothing. Since you claim they won the SB because of "cheating", then the onus is on you to prove that point., with specific examples of how this alleged "cheating" resulted in SB wins. A lack of SB wins since 2004 doesn't cut it, since every year 31 teams don't win a SB. And it is alleged cheating since the ruling against sideline taping wasn't official until 2007, and they were caught doing so in the first half of the first game of that season. Plus, since their champioships were neither revoked nor asterisked by NFL, you don't have much of a leg to stand on. All you have is supposition and specualtion. If you want to contend that is proof enough, then you're neither a very good debater nor a very bright.

The Truth? really? the patriots won all those honors before the cheating was caught. Unless they prove the can win a super bowl without cheating. I'm still sticking with the point:
"They won 'cause they cheated. You aint' (winning) 'cause you not (cheating..)

To all Patriot fans, Great job on the Championships!! But that was a while ago, ya'll just are not that good anymore, the Colts have owned NE the last couple years including when they kicked your butts and then won the Super Bowl. Oh, and the other Manning (they were born and raised in New Orleans) kicked your butts to end that perfect season. Been downhill since.
You still talk like you still have that team, but wait the Jets beat you, with Rex Ryan running his mouth all over the victory. The defense is old, people are gone altogether, or gone downhill due to age. McGinest, Harrison, Bruschi, Vrabel, Law, Seymore, are gone.
Meanwhile the Saints have built an offensive juggernaut, and have improved defense albeit a banged up secondary, and will show the Patriots the new world order this Monday night.
Saints 38 Pats 24 New England cannot mess with the new real deal!! have a bowl of clam chowder and get over it!
