Patriots lead Colts 24-14 at end of 3rd quarter

  • Print

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Tom Brady(notes) had 315 yards passing and two touchdown passes, and the New England Patriots lead the Indianapolis Colts 24-14 at the end of the third quarter on Sunday night.

Randy Moss(notes) had six catches for 162 yards and a touchdown for New England, and Reggie Wayne(notes) had eight catches for 110 yards for the Colts through three quarters.

Brady had a huge first half, but he finally made a mistake early in the second half. He tried to find Moss in the end zone again, but Antoine Bethea(notes) stepped in front of Moss for the interception.

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning(notes) gave the ball right back when he underthrew Pierre Garcon(notes) and Leigh Bodden(notes) intercepted.

New England led 24-14 and could have gained firm control, but Philip Wheeler(notes) caused Laurence Maroney(notes) to fumble into the end zone, and Indianapolis’ Gary Brackett(notes) recovered. New England had taken nearly eight minutes off the clock on the drive. The Colts failed to score on the next possession.

Brady’s scoring tosses of 63 yards to Moss and 9 yards to Julian Edelman(notes) in the second quarter put the Patriots up 24-7. The Colts responded when Manning completed a 20-yard scoring pass to Wayne to cut New England’s lead to 24-14.

Both teams went three-and-out on their opening possessions, then scored on their second.

Manning’s 15-yard TD pass on a dump-off to Joseph Addai(notes) finished an 8-play, 90-yard drive to put the Colts (8-0) ahead 7-0. A key play was a 23-yard catch by Wayne on the sideline against double coverage. The Patriots challenged the ruling that the pass was complete, but the original call was upheld, costing New England a challenge and a timeout.

The Patriots (6-2) responded with a 73-yard drive. Brady found Moss deep down the middle for 55 yards to put New England at the Indianapolis 6-yard line. Maroney scored on a 1-yard run two plays later, and New England tied the score at 7-all.

Addai left the game with an injured finger on his right hand, but he eventually returned.

Stephen Gostkowski’s(notes) 31-yard field goal early in the second quarter put the Patriots up 10-7.

After the Patriots’ defense stopped the Colts again, Brady connected with Moss for the 63-yard touchdown, to increase New England’s lead to 17-7.

Brady struck again minutes later. He shrugged off Robert Mathis(notes) before delivering the 9-yard touchdown pass to Edelman that gave the Patriots a 24-7 lead.

Manning responded this time, finding Wayne in the middle of the end zone with 4:17 left in the second quarter to cut New England’s lead to 24-14.

The matchups between the teams in recent years often have had long-term implications. Four times since 2003, the winner of this regular-season game also became the AFC champion. Three times, the winner won the Super Bowl.

Look at the here and now,not the back then and what was.I don't care if New England won 78 Super Bowls, the fact remains tonight that they are going home LOSERS and if they go to the playoffs, the Colts will be waiting for them again.

for all of you taht said the colts have a weak schudle i guess that means that the pat's are weak . manning blew alot of passes after the defe. got the ball back for the off. becuse the score would have been more in in are faver . it's pretty much been known that pat's preety much stole the three rings from the rams and two from yhe colts so it should be rams one colts three. sorry the pat's are weak becuse we all know the colts have a weak schudle year in and year out.

LOL im not crying cause my team lost Im laughing with tears rolling down my face because everyone thinks that the colts are going 10-0 and are going to win the superbowl lol. I dont see that.

The Colts have gotten very very lucky on quite a few games and have come back at the last second and have won only by a few points LIKE TONIGHT!!! So like I said dont go getting too excited.

BTW I know plenty of arrogant colts fans...one who sits right near me at work lol. He has been spoken too about his abusive behavior. Im sure by tomorrow he will lose his job.......lol

I don't mind this Colts victory because it will lull them and their fans into a false sense of security. It's not a question of if, but when, and against who Indy will perform its annual el foldo against in the postseason. The only way the Colts could win the Super Bowl if by playing a team led by Rex Grossman. Peyton Manning is 7-8 in the postseason, and has gotten knocked out in the first game in 6 of 9 playoff series. These are facts.

So soak it up, Indy fans. But you know you have a sneaking feeling in the back of your minds that the Colts will do it to you again--start out 1 million and 0 and then go down to Billy Volek or some ridiculous such thing. With that postseason history, you shouldn't be talking any trash whatsoever.

This game will make it even more awesome when Indy performs its annual el foldo in the playoffs. because there won't be any team led by Rex Grossman for the Colts to play.

That was the worst call I ever seen in my life. I have been watching football for years and I have never seen a couch give the ball back to a team with under 2 minutes and only leading by 6 points at the 30 yard line. Never mind that the quarterback was Manning.I am not a fan of either team, but that was just plan bad.

Chad, I thought the same thing. That was the difference in the game in the end, was that bogus pass interference call. The Pats defender was looking for the ball and was playing the pass, AND STILL GOT FLAGGED.... That play was for 32 yards and got Indy the TD to get to 6 pts. PERIOD. It should have never got to that point... Anything after that (last 3 minutes) would have never been the same outcome. The officials screwed up another good game..... Sort of like the Dallas/GB game when the coach for GB tried challanging a THIRD play!! Enough with the 60 year old refs that can't keep up with the play anymore.....

Belicheck should have called for a punt. However the Patriots had the 1st down. I'll chose to believe the refs simply screwed up there and weren't biased.

Congrats to both Colts and Patriots on a great game. I am sure all the fans are wondering WTF was Bill doing not punting it. Huge balls to go for it on 4th, and a big back-fire from it. Awsome way to capitolize the opertunity and win. I am not a fan of either team (Bengals!!), but deff best game of the weekend. Wow what a comeback!

Brady was by far the better QB during the whole game and you all know Manning got lucky just like we got lucky a few times too. Your interceptions didnt amount to much just like some our plays didnt either...so you won by ONE and yeah a win is a win but you didnt kill us or slam us down!!!

Sheesh yeah I live in Indiana and the colts fans here are the biggest whiners in the world.....
