Bruschi faces challenges in Patriots camp

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—In his 14th season with the New England Patriots, Ted Bruschi finds himself trying to hold off a group of challengers to his job while adapting to a new defensive look that could impact his role.

Bruschi returned to practice Sunday after an extended absence.

“Just trying to take care of a few things,” Bruschi said after the two-hour workout. “As you get a little bit older, you have to mend some things and it’s taken me a little longer to get out here. I’m feeling better now, and hopefully I can get back to work.”

Bruschi credited the team’s younger players with showing a lot of “energy and enthusiasm,” two things he has had in abundance since the Patriots drafted him out of Arizona in 1996.

He has been a defensive mainstay as the Patriots made nine playoff appearances, won eight division championships, five conference titles and three Super Bowls.

Bruschi admitted he has a lot of catching up to do.

“You don’t really get that look, you don’t really get those reps until you’re out here on the practice field,” he said. “Do you feel a little bit behind because you haven’t been out here for so long? Yeah, but you get in the meeting room and watch the film, and hopefully, you don’t become an error repeater.”

The Patriots, deep on the defensive line, used more 4-3 fronts instead of their usual 3-4 against the Philadelphia Eagles in the first preseason game last Thursday.

“4-3? 3-4? 5-2? Whatever it is, whatever numbers you want to put out there, is it possible for us to do it? I think it is because of the guys that are multitalented along our front,” Bruschi said

The changes could affect his role.

“We’re not sure,” he said. “We’re in training camp right now, roles are being defined and I know we have a lot of good inside linebackers. Gary Guyton’s(notes) a good player. Jerod Mayo’s(notes) a good player. You know what he can do. However it is—even myself, in my 14th year—every training camp I have to look at it as I have to come in and establish a role for myself on this team. This year’s no different.”

Bruschi has made stroke awareness a cause since he suffered a stroke in February 2005. It appeared at first his career was over, but he returned to the team that fall and in 2008, was a defensive captain for the seventh time. He ended up fourth on the team in tackles.

Bruschi’s foundation, “Tedy’s Team,” raises funds for stroke prevention and he works with the American Stroke Association to raise awareness about symptoms and treatment.

Bruschi missed the game against the Eagles but said he hoped to be able to play as much as Belichick wants him to Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals at Gillette Stadium.

Desi - The reason Tom Brady hasn't won a playoff game since last year is he was out with an injury. How f*cking stupid can you be? GO PATRIOTS !!!

Post # 12 CT Sucks- I wouldn't call the Giants SB win an as* beating. I mean really. The final score was 17-14. The Giants scored with less than 37 seconds opn the clock and "the catch" is still talked about earlier that kept that drive alive. Had he missed that catch then the Patriots would have had their 4th SB win by a final score of 14-10. So shut the hell up retard. Go Patriots !!!!

Teddy's a stand up blue collar guy I respect and he has the rings to prove it .I'm sure when he's ready to hang it up he will ,but the man has a heart of gold something that a lot of player's don't have.

    Respect to Teddy Bruschi

New England sports was in high gear for a while but it all seemed to come apart during the Manning drive over the Pats linebackers. After that you had the career ending injury to Brady who's never won a playoff game since. The Yankees are rolling over the Red Sox and Marbury has ruined the chemistry with the Celtics and gave Ainge angina and Belichick is just a shell after the cheating scandal.

teddy is a total class act, he has heart and is very smart, sure hes lost a step but he can read the plays and position him self and team mates to stop it, hopefully he stays in football as a coach after he decides to retire from playing, but until then give em hell bruschi!

Cool thing about this guy is you know he will do the best thing for him and his family and his team. When he is gone, I'll miss the only reason I've been a Pats fan.

Okay, GATOR HATOR 1 (post 12), apologies accepted. You are, apparently, not as sub-human as your post (# 2) implies. Likewise, if I misjudged you and was out-of-line with my comments; accept my apology. We all need to be more civil and considerate of one another. Tedy Bruschis is truly one of the best, most civil, most considerate and most professional players in the whole of the National Football League. Moreover, my friend, we have to live with each other and be tolerant of one another. No one should take for granted or tolerate the immense destructive power of hate mongering. Peace, GATOR HATOR 1!.

Bruschi made some good contributions to football, got a few rings and was a good person to boot. Why can't we just leave it at that and let him make up his own mind on his life? We don't know how he's feeling and we aren't NFL coaches. Obviously he still has something to offer or the patriots wouldn't keep him.

Sorry Bruschi this should be your last year. Walk off the field while you can. You've done your job so well for so long. But, it's over. Don't wait for something bad to happen. Patriots fans will always love you, football fans will respect you and the world will be a better place with your contributions as a coach and father. RB's and WR's are only getting bigger and faster. It's going to hurt a little more this year.

To the pats haters: you’re logic is astounding... if he's all washed up why would you want him to leave? Wouldn’t it give your team a better chance if he was 2nd rate and stayed?

The day he doesn't perform as well as another available choice is the day Bill sits him down. Until then he must be doing well and should stay until he decides to go.

I'd love to see Teddy play some more. He's getting so slow and useless it's great for other teams. With this "has-been" on the team the Pats are weaker. Good! Stick around Teddy, show us yet another good athlete that stayed in the game too long.
