Brady, Patriots deal with lackluster 3-2 start

  • Print

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—Tom Brady(notes) launched a long pass to Randy Moss(notes) that was too long. He threw a short pass and hit an open Wes Welker(notes)—in the foot.

Later in last Sunday’s game, Brady tried to stage a go-ahead drive in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter but lost a fumble when he was sacked and the New England Patriots lost to the Denver Broncos 20-17 in overtime.

The quarterback known for his comebacks hasn’t regained his form after a knee injury ended his 2008 season in the first game.

Brady hasn’t been terrible, he just hasn’t been Brady. The 2007 NFL MVP has become the 2009 poster boy for the team’s lackluster 3-2 start.

“Everyone counts on me to perform at a certain level. I count on them to do their job,” Brady said. “When you’re not doing it, it’s very frustrating. You really feel, in a way, that you’re letting your teammates down. You also have to have the resiliency to go back out there and give it your best.”

Yet the Patriots’ problems go far beyond a star quarterback working his way back from knee surgery.

The defense allowed the Broncos touchdown drives of 90 and 98 yards. The secondary has one interception. The retirements of Rodney Harrison(notes) and Tedy Bruschi(notes) left New England without a vocal defensive leader, one reason they re-signed linebacker Junior Seau(notes) this week.

The offense lacks a reliable third receiver, a role Joey Galloway(notes) has failed to fill, and that’s allowed teams to focus on shutting down Moss, who had just one catch against Denver. The play-calling has become more predictable with the departure of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, now the Broncos head coach.

Coach Bill Belichick isn’t putting all the blame on Brady.

“It’s not one position, it’s not one player, it’s not one particular type of play,” he said. “Overall, we’re just not as efficient and precise as we need to be. There’s no other way to put it.”

But the focus always falls on one position—quarterback.

Brady ranks 19th in the NFL in passer rating, trailing Jacksonville’s David Garrard(notes), and has a lower completion percentage than Washington’s Jason Campbell(notes). He has six touchdown passes after throwing an NFL record 50 in 2007. His longest completion is 36 yards.

His left knee may be healthy enough for him to play. But there’s more to it than that.

“When you’re healthy, you’re liable to (follow) all the way through and risk getting hit,” said Tom Martinez, a quarterback coach in northern California who has worked with Brady since he was about 13. “When you’re coming back from knee surgery and you realize how close your career was to being over, it’s like boxing. You’ve got to learn how to throw a punch, take a punch, and mechanics suffer.”

Martinez noticed Brady not following through on some passes, which gives him more time to prepare for a hit but hurts his accuracy.

Martinez says he also saw that last year from Peyton Manning(notes), who had an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee. Manning missed the preseason and the Indianapolis Colts were 3-4 before winning their last nine regular-season games.

Cincinnati’s Carson Palmer(notes) had reconstructive left knee surgery on Jan. 10, 2006, and played in the next season opener.

“I was told way back when I had the surgery that it was going to get better year after year,” Palmer said. “I was going to feel 100 percent, but wouldn’t realize I was 100 percent until the following year and the following year.”

How long will it take Brady to return to his pre-surgery level? That’s tough to predict.

Last Sunday with the ball at the Patriots 28-yard line and four minutes left in the fourth quarter, he missed Welker, who seemingly had a clear path to the end zone. Welker saw an opening up the middle and changed the shorter route he was supposed to run. Brady did not spot the adjustment and hit Welker’s foot.

Martinez is optimistic that Brady will be his old self again—this season.

“I do,” he said. “I don’t think the end of the frustration is there yet. It kills him.”

Still, the Patriots might have been 5-0 if Brady hadn’t overthrown receivers in the end zone—Julian Edelman(notes) against the Jets and Moss against the Broncos.

The Patriots were 2-3 in 2001 and 3-2 in 2003 and went on to win Super Bowls both times. In 2007, they were 18-0 before losing the Super Bowl to the New York Giants. Last year, they were 11-5 without Brady.

Tight end Chris Baker joined the team this year from the New York Jets and didn’t come with inflated expectations.

“History doesn’t affect anything that we do here now,” he said. “There’s a lot of new guys in the locker room. I think we’ll be all right.”

Their next two games are against winless teams, Tennessee and Tampa Bay, before their bye week. By then, Brady will have had two more games to adjust to game action.

“Subconsciously, he has to still think about when that pocket’s getting close to him,” said Denver defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday(notes), who forced Brady’s fumble, “but in our game, it seemed like he stayed on the spot well and it didn’t bother him.”

Brady still must fine tune his mechanics, improve communication with receivers and clear whatever mental hurdles remain.

“When you don’t play as well as you’d like, there’s really no secret to it,” he said. “You’ve just got to say ‘This is what it is,’ and ‘This is what we’re not doing a very good job of,’ and ‘This is what I’m not doing a very good job of’ and trying to do it better.”

The quarterback coach who has worked with him nearly every offseason thinks he’ll succeed.

“When he’s good, Brady’s as good mechanically as anybody,” Martinez said. “It would be like Tiger Woods coming out of his knee surgery and maybe for X number of matches he wasn’t hitting the ball quite like he wanted to.

“The great ones will be fine.”

Takes time, True. Unemployment is higher than anticipated but not totally unexpected and it's slowed down increasingly. And considering where we were a year ago, collectively the nation can breathe easier, even if that hasn't translated to those individuals, and I can certainly respect their frustration and concern.

As for what he's done, check out Rachel Maddow's take. Yes, she has a more left-wing point of view, but It's still an interesting counterpoint: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMJuEOaF84o

These initiatives have bailed out big business, wall street, but the 9% unemployed Americans are still looking for their savior. A Nobel for what? I heard somewhere that Obama watched a College football game last week and won the Heiseman!

Good point, True. I know what you're saying, but I always contend that the team that wins the championship is by the nature of the victory, the best because if you're the best, you prove it on the field. I don't like the "we're the better team" whine on the losing side. As for the Pats last year, I didn't feel cheated by their absence and the Cards making it. If the Pats were a playoff team, then they should have beaten the Dolphins or one of the other 4 teams to get in. They didn't, so c'est la vie.

And it's been 9 months. Obama has actually been very active and started many initiatives that are in progress: saving the auto industry, dealing with our human rights issues (Guantanomo, torture), winding down Iraq (wish he was smarter on Afghanistan, but it looks like were idlingin neutral so maybe escalation isn't in the cards), healthcare of course. Whether people are happy with what he's done is another matter, but to say he's done nothing is self-serving to those who want that case to be made. Just wish news orgs. vetted spent more time analyzing their own sources rather than whether an SNL sketch was accurate or not.

Good talking to you. Thanks for the civility.

    True, no.

Casey, gee, I don't you didn't give a damn? And It doesn't matter what you, the Raiders, or anyone thinks what "should have" happened. All that matters is what does happen. You want to go the SB, win the freakin' playoff. Which means overcoming a bad call (which is more of a bad rule, because the call was correct).

As for the Ravens game, yeah, I wouldn't have thrown those flags (some of which went the Ravens way as well, just not as pronounced). But after a call is made, the team still has to perform. You don't, you lose. The refs don't play the game; they may screw up moments, even crucial moments, but they don't play. And with all of this, the Ravens still had a chance to win, but Clayton drops the ball and misses the first down. Oh well. Moreover, ticky-tack calls are how Ron Winters and his crew call games. Before each game, the Belichick has his staff study pattern of the crews offiicating to get an idea of how they call games. His gives out the most penalties for ticky-tack stuff. So in addition to whining about refs, blame coaching staffs for not preparing players to be better aware of what's going to cost them. Does it suck? Yeah. Does it help a team win games whining about it? No. Bottomline, the players need to get it done on the field, no matter what happens.

Pats should be 5-2 when they hit their bye week. Not really all that lackluster. Now if they lose to Tennessee and Tampa, then their may be cause for concern. Pats'll probably make the wild card, probably wont go to the Superbowl this year. Next year I think Brady will return to form. I am in no way a Pats fan, but it shouldn't be such a huge deal when they start 3-2. Especially with their star player comming back from a season ending knee injury.

The Pats aren't going to go 16-0 every season.

I guess Kraft bought them some extra hype time or something..It's funny how as soon as the pats started "winning" they became the new "Americas team" overnight.... to the point of making real football fans want to puke... And while yes, I know the pats did have their 4-5 loyal fans before Bledsoe the bandwaggon sure filled up quickly...

So TNOB.... your spew about refs not making a difference and a team putting themselves in a position to put the game in the refs hands.. how about a couple weeks ago the pats against the Ravens (who I despise, so not being bias just aware) where everytime the pats couldn't convert a 3rd down a late flag came in to give them yet another shot? the BS call that should have been offensive PI against Welker? then the call against the coach for talking, that's never called on any other team 2 BS roughing calls and the list goes on..... how many bad calls are a team supposed to over come to beat the pats? Just curious?

and you have a weak arguement (at best) about the raiders game..... The fact is regaudless if they had a lead when the rediculous call was made... the clock would have been rub out and the game was over.... argue that to yourself all you want, convince yourself the pats "earned" that win...... Now that takes class...
