Belichick shies away from Seymour trade questions

  • Print

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—Richard Seymour(notes) made five Pro Bowls in five straight years. Two days after he was traded, Bill Belichick didn’t want to talk about dealing him.

The New England Patriots coach preferred to focus on the start of his first regular season without one of the best defensive linemen in team history.

“Because we don’t have rights to Richard, there really isn’t anything I can say about him or his situation,” Belichick said Tuesday. “So I’ll have to pass on those questions at this time.”

He was more concerned with preparing the players he’s still coaching for Monday night’s season opener against the Buffalo Bills. But he did praise Seymour.

“There’s a lot of things that Richard did well,” Belichick said in his first remarks since Sunday’s written statement announcing the trade for Oakland’s first-round draft pick in 2011, “but that’s the way it is and we’re moving forward and our team’s moving forward.”

He refused to say whether the trade had been completed in the wake of Seymour’s failure to report to the Raiders on Monday and Tuesday, although the defensive end was listed on the Raiders roster on its Web site.

Oakland coach Tom Cable said Seymour wants to be with the team but first had to resolve some issues with New England.

Asked if the deal was done, Belichick noted that the Patriots no longer had the rights to Seymour and said that the status of the trade was “not a topic that I’m going to address.”

The NFL wouldn’t talk about it either.

“Any comment at this time would have to come from the teams,” league spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday

In the Patriots statement Sunday, Belichick praised Seymour.

“From nearly the day he arrived in 2001, Richard Seymour established himself as one of our premier players for nearly a decade,” Belichick said then. “His presence has been felt as a force on the field, a respected man off it and a multiyear champion.”

Seymour was taken with the sixth overall draft pick in 2001 and began a string of five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances in the 2002 season. He played key roles on three Super Bowl-winning teams.

Seymour is the fourth defensive leader to leave the Patriots since last season after Mike Vrabel(notes) was traded to Kansas City and Tedy Bruschi(notes) and Rodney Harrison(notes) retired.

Now players like second-year linebacker Jerod Mayo(notes) and defensive linemen Vince Wilfork(notes) and Ty Warren(notes) may have to fill leadership roles.

“We have a lot of good leaders on our team and especially on the defensive side of the ball,” Belichick said. “No doubt about it, it’s different, but I think it’s good.”

Wilfork, in the last year of his contract, wants an extension.

Director of player personnel Nick Caserio said in a conference call that he had no comment on whether money saved from Seymour, who is scheduled to make $3.7 million in 2009, the final year of his deal, would help in negotiating with Wilfork.

Defensive coordinator Dean Pees said he was very busy preparing for the Bills game and wouldn’t talk about whether Belichick had asked for his input on the trade.

“This is not going to be an interview about Richard,” Pees said politely in a conference call. “It’s really about Buffalo and whoever we have here” to face the Bills.

The Patriots made other meaningful moves since Friday night’s exhibition finale against the New York Giants, cutting quarterback Andrew Walter(notes), wide receiver Greg Lewis(notes) and tight end Alex Smith. They signed to their practice squad quarterback Isaiah Stanback(notes), who played wide receiver at Dallas before being cut.

The Patriots have only Tom Brady(notes) and rookie free agent Brian Hoyer(notes) at quarterback and Belichick said he isn’t ruling out adding players at any positions.

But the big change is at Seymour’s spot, and Belichick wouldn’t say the Patriots will be better without him.

“We’ll find that out starting this week,” he said.

    Belichick is a nut sack.
He was okay at first and kind of edgy in his hoodie, but now he's like a wrinkly ol' sweaty ball sack that no one wants to hear about.

The Patriots just got 1st rd. pick (probably top 5) and davis may only have this guy 1 yr. And he will not save LA from horrible season. Trades like this is why Raiders will suck for a long time. Patriots will draft top player and have him for 5 yrs maybe longer. Davis is an idiot..........but he wuold have wasted pick on stupid choice anyway.........

A first round 2011 draft pick that you know will be in the top 5, because the Raiders will always suck with Al "I'm Senial, someone please kill me" Davis behind the helm, for an injury prone and aging D-lineman. Yeah he can still produce, no doubt about that, but his age and durability are a big factor. I think it was an excellent move.

Just listened to WEEI interview with Coach B and he mentioned there was a time value to trading for picks. Sounded to me like Oakland might have offered a 2010 2nd round pick but Pats preferred a 2011 1st round pick. Once again a genious move by Patriots.

Seymour has been a stalwart for us for years and hate to see him go but the value was too good to ignore and I'm optimistic that your players can adequately fill that void.

Who get's crucified for it? Most veterans don't attend. The one's that do are usually players that were traded to that team and they attend to get a head start on the play book (Fred Taylor). I think we're just talking about it because it's Tom Brady and it's a light week for news on the NFL.

As there is no such thing as "god," Brady will be safe from that curse. BTW, how does Brady get a pass for skipping activities and most other guys get crucified for it? (Crucified...get the irony?)

George D must be a Cleveland Browns fan. They are bitter like that. I, like every other normal football fan, is glad to see Brady back and healthy. PS....why would you call Brady a scumbag?

    Go Steelers.

george d "the hell with tom brady hes a scumbag that has to cheat to win super bowls i pray to god he gets hurt in the season onper again and this time its his career "

Of course God puts injuring players right at the top of his priority list. Obviously you are very emotional about this topic. Might I suggest some valium? Wishing an injury on a player is just low.

it is hilarious when people turn to God o injure people. That is so stupid. Maybe these people should go to church more, unless their God is one of those many phony ones. Back to brady. Brady is the best. Everyone says "oh he didnt go to OTA's" , pretty much like every year he has not, and all the other veterans on the team. It is not a big deal. Him and Moss going for 30 tds this year baby. 56-0 Patriots over Bills hahahaha Bills freaking suck

WRs like K. Johnson, Steve Smith, Randy Moss, A. Boldin, L. Coles, S. Moss and J. Walker have done more disruptive things to a team in a season than T.O. has done in his entire 13yr career...lol...But yet fans still think T.O. is a distraction to a team...T.O. has never refused to play, never demanded to be traded, never sucker punched a teammate and broke their jaw, never had off the field issues, and never walked off the field and left his team to play without him....But yet, he gets blamed for what happens to a team AFTER he leaves...lol....If your girlfriend leaves you and dates another guy and then that relationship is horrible...what sense does it make to blame you....you dont date her anymore....lol...Thats how silly it is for fans to blame T.O. for what happens after he leaves a team...You should blame the coach, the players, and their performance for what happens after T.O. leaves...However, oddly, no one credits the following team for what happens NOW that T.O. is with them...lol...Its very funny to read how people think..its almost comical....lol

IMO, voluntary workouts are no big deal...and no 5yr veteran of the game or longer, ever needs to show up to Voluntary Workouts....So, IMO, it should not have been an issue when T.O. did it and it doesnt need to be an issue now that TB has done it...But for the media to throw T.O. under the bus for not showing up for voluntary workouts; when he has never shown up for voluntary workouts throughout his entire career...but just brush over it when TB does it...is quite simply unfair and hypocritical...I dont have a problem with when players choose to workout as long as they show up to mini camp in shape and ready to play...I just dont like biased media perceptions that cause unknowing sports fan to foster an image of an athlete that is completely biased....Any sports fan that likes Steve Smith, Chad Johnson, Randy Moss, or A. Boldin but does not like T.O. is a fan that has allowed their perception of a player to be dictated by what the media tells them...and not by what the player actually does...

If this was Romo missing practice to go to a gala with his super model wife there would've been an ESPN round table discussion about it. Brady gets a free pass because of East Coast bias.
