Delhomme to remain Panthers starting quarterback

  • Print

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—A miserable seven-game stretch of 18 interceptions and three lost fumbles wasn’t bad enough for Jake Delhomme(notes) to lose his job.

Delhomme will start for Carolina on Sunday against Arizona—the same opponent in which he began the worst slump of his career.

After a couple of days to think about it, coach John Fox said Wednesday he determined the beleaguered Delhomme remains the best option ahead of backups Matt Moore(notes) and A.J. Feeley(notes).

“The 48-hour rule, you go back and you look and there’s no question that we’ve struggled in that area,” Fox said. “Going through and looking at some of our mishaps, I don’t think it’s one guy. I still think he gives us the best chance to win.”

Delhomme was facing the first uncertainty with his status since he replaced Rodney Peete at halftime of the 2003 season opener and led the Panthers to a Super Bowl berth. Fox wavered after he threw three more picks against Buffalo Sunday, two of which led to 14 Bills points in a 20-9 loss that dropped the Panthers to 2-4.

Fox was noncommittal on Monday, and Delhomme acknowledged he would have understood if Fox benched him.

“If he would have went that way, how could I blame him? I mean, let’s be real here, how could I blame him?” Delhomme said. “But I was hoping it would be me. I’m going down swinging. I don’t know any other way to put it.”

Delhomme’s downfall has been sudden and striking. He successfully returned from reconstructive elbow surgery last season and led the Panthers to a 12-4 record and the NFC South title. But then Delhomme threw five interceptions and lost a fumble in a stunning 33-13 home loss to Arizona in the NFC divisional playoffs

The Panthers gave the 34-year-old Delhomme a five-year contract extension in the offseason that includes $12 million in guaranteed money over the first three years. Rip Scherer replaced Denver-bound Mike McCoy as quarterbacks coach and vowed to focus on Delhomme’s fundamentals.

Instead, Delhomme has picked up where he ended the 2008 season.

Delhomme threw four interceptions and lost a fumble in a Week 1 loss to Philadelphia, and the bad throws and decisions have continued. He has an NFL-high 13 picks to go with only four touchdown passes—none to star receiver Steve Smith. His 56.5 passer rating ranks 32nd in the league, and Carolina’s minus-14 turnover margin is the worst in the NFL.

Delhomme said minutes after the Buffalo loss that he was “almost numb” and called it a “crushing” defeat. Fox for the first time didn’t throw all his support behind Delhomme, and there were questions that Delhomme had lost his confidence.

“Would I sit here and tell you it’s through the roof? I mean, that would be a lie,” Delhomme said. “I still do have a lot of confidence, but it’s frustrating.”

Part of Fox’s decision to stick with Delhomme may be because he has no attractive alternative.

Feeley was signed last month to replace Josh McCown(notes), who was placed on injured reserve with knee and foot injuries. The nine-year veteran has started 15 games in stints with four teams, but has acknowledged he’s still learning Carolina’s offense.

Moore started three games as an undrafted rookie late in the 2007 season when Delhomme was recovering from his elbow surgery. He’s played in only one game since, throwing an interception after Delhomme was yanked in the loss to the Eagles.

“My role on this team is the backup right now,” Moore said. “That’s how it was and that’s how I figured it would be. I’m 100 percent behind Jake.”

Fox, whose future is uncertain with Carolina’s struggles this season, is gambling Delhomme will find his way. The Panthers returned 20 of 22 starters from last season and traded next year’s first-round draft pick to San Francisco. They were built to win now, but Fox has acknowledged they’re fortunate to have two wins with all the turnovers.

Now Delhomme hopes to turn things around against the team that started his misery, the Cardinals.

“Something you have to think about is it can’t get much worse, so don’t worry about nothing,” Delhomme said. “Go out and do it. That’s kind of the mentality that you have to take. That’s how I’m taking it. Hey, it couldn’t get much worse than last week. Let’s go, forget about it and go on.”

Not a Panther fan. Looking at the qb situation from the outside, I feel bad for all the carolina fans, They signed Jake for 5 more years. When you lose turnover battle , you lose the game. Carolina has better chance of winning playing single wing.

I agree William. Can't all be blamed on Jake. But the change has to start somewhere. Someone commented earlier about having a good defense, but they spend to much time on the field. If you go back - and someone correct me if I am wrong- most of the games this year Carolina has lead in time of possesion, just not transfering that in to points on the board. I stay with the panthers through the good and the bad. Football however is a business, and like in any other business if an employee is not performing they need to be replaced.

Jake is done as a qb, but the truth us that he is the best qb on that team... Look for the Panthers to draft a qb and start him right away....

jmark- remember we picked carr up from Houston back in 2007. He really didn't get to play. Not sure why they ever let him go. And look at Schaub, why didn't they grab him up when Atlanta let him go? Oh wait, because we had no money to spend on a QB because we had to keep someone named Julius who didn't even want to be a panther any longer.

hey, once the ball leaves jakes hands, he's not responsable for what happens after that. theres always a 50/50 chance that a panther will get it. jake did his part by getting the ball in the air. how many int has the greatest frave thrown? eli threw three this past week, titans gone down, just the fair weather panther fans think the world is flat. in the nfc south, its a every year thing, top one year, bottom the next. just have fun watching this year and hope next year will be better. its just a game.

delhomme is a joke, how is this idiot not serving burgers at Mc-d's by now... He would prob. give it to the wrong customer and mess that job up to. I use to defend Fox to any and everyone. When he 1st got here he turned this team around no question about it but now he is just running it into the ground. Anyone can try to argue that it's the O-line or the receivers but come on, you can only blame some many people for his league leading turnover margin. The fact that he only has 4 touchdowns speaks for itself, how is it even possible to turn the ball over almost 5 times as much as you score. To make it worse now Carolina's few stars want out, why because they want to be on a winning team just like everyone else in the league and as long as Delhomme is under center it just isn't going to happen. Last year we had a great run but Delhomme had nothing to do with it. It was all the running game and why were they calling so many passes in the Arizona game anyways? Hand the ball off, don't let the idiot QB that piggybacked his way to the post season screw up all the work that the O-line and the backs put in to getting the team there. I've heard a lot of people blame the O-line for a lot of Jake's mistakes, but there is no way you could have a running game like Carolina does without a good O-line. They blame the receivers, Smith is an outstanding receiver and always has been. He has done more than his part to make Fox and Delhomme look good, no shock he wants out, if he had even a 1/2 assed QB throwing him the ball he would be a nightmare every game. Even Mose is a pretty good receiver, he had a great season right before he was traded to Chicago, he didn't do much there but Chicago had QB issues of their own. Our defense is top notch but they spend most of the game on the field, there is no way they could keep up their play when they spend that much time playing. Delhomme and his 1-3 and outs have killed them. Delhomme needs to go and Fox can follow him out. Bring on Cowher.

Jake is married to Jerry's daughter, that is why he is still playing. I feel sorry for all the other guys on the team who are excellent players and want to win but, instead have to tolerate that so called QB. The only thing that will change this whole situation is empty seats at BOA stadium. Then Jerry will get the picture. If I were Jake I would pull myself out. How selfish is he to stay in and keep the team down. Jake, bench yourself and do yourself a your team a favor!
