Broken or not, hand injury limits DE Peppers

  • Print

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The right hand in question wasn’t wrapped in a cast Monday. The hand’s owner, Julius Peppers(notes), wasn’t talking, and Carolina teammate Everette Brown(notes) flinched when asked about it.

“No comments on that,” Brown said. “I don’t really know the situation, what’s going on. I won’t go in depth about it.”

The four-time Pro Bowl defensive end’s hand is a touchy subject in the secretive world of NFL injuries. Coach John Fox would only call it a “messed up hand.” After Peppers played only on passing downs in a win over Atlanta on Nov. 15, teammate Jon Beason(notes) said Peppers’ hand was broken.

Fox wouldn’t confirm it, and Peppers didn’t appear on the injury report last week. But in Thursday’s loss to Miami, Peppers was wearing a wrap, was again limited to mostly passing downs and did little against Dolphins left tackle Jake Long(notes).

Collecting more than $1 million a game with the richest one-year contract in the NFL, Peppers has one tackle and two pressures combined in the last two games. He did force a fumble against Miami, but the Dolphins recovered.

The injury has also prevented him from moving around the line to confuse offenses. When he tried lining up on the left side when the Dolphins were facing third-and-1 in the fourth quarter, he used an awkward stance with his left hand down and was called for a neutral zone infraction. It gave the Dolphins a first down and they went on to kick a field goal for a 17-6 lead.

“It’s pretty hard. I played in college with a broken thumb and had a cast on my whole hand,” Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson(notes) said. “You can’t really use the hand the way you want to.”

When asked to clarify the injury after the Miami game, Fox replied: “I could, but I probably wouldn’t.” Whatever it is, Beason is surprised Peppers is playing at all.

“I couldn’t do it,” he said. “I’ve had some sprains and stuff like that and had to practice with a cast on. I don’t know how he does it, to still go out there and be productive. I can imagine it’s tough, but I can’t relate.”

A one-handed Peppers has meant for an anemic pass rush. The Panthers don’t have a sack in the last two games. They couldn’t get to Miami quarterback Chad Henne(notes) Thursday even with the Dolphins using three centers and constantly shifting players on the offensive line because of injury.

“It’s always frustrating when you can’t get to the passer, especially on third down when everybody in the stands knows they’re passing,” said Brown, who started in Peppers’ place.

The much-scrutinized Peppers had been playing well before getting injured in the loss to New Orleans on Nov. 8. After recording only one sack in the first three games, Peppers had six in the next four.

He’s now without a sack in three straight games. Sitting at 4-6 and facing a difficult road to get into playoff contention, Peppers’ “messed up hand” is messing up Carolina’s season.

“He’s doing everything in his power to get through it,” Fox said. “We’ll evaluate it as we go.”

NOTES: Johnson said he’ll miss his second straight game Sunday at the New York Jets with a strained pectoral muscle. “It’s frustrating, but you don’t want to jump out there and hurt it even worse,” he said. … FB Brad Hoover(notes) ran a little Monday and said he might try to practice Wednesday. He’s missed the past three games with a high ankle sprain. … S Charles Godfrey(notes) (ankle) is close to returning, but may not get his starting job back with Sherrod Martin(notes) playing well in his place. “Whenever I get back and get well then we’ll see how it plays out,” Godfrey said. … The Panthers held a light walkthrough and did some running after getting two days off.

First of all we need a coach and a QB and a GM with some balls. We need players that will lay it out on the line and stop pointing fingers at everybody. Shut up and play some ball like Steelers,Colts, and New England do every year. Great Organization that will show you how to win and dont point fingers. Get jake ass out of the line up and get Coach Bill Cowher in Carolina!

yo screw all you haters, peppers is a beast and would tear up any offensive line in the NFL. You cant point a finger at peppers and say he is the reason for Carolina's problems this season. Stay a few more years peppers!!! We need you!!!

Wow... for one you guys are assuming that other teams are that stupid. A healthy Peppers will reek havoc on an offense, so teams have started to double on him or have taken necessary precautions. The defense is getting used to a new system and you can tell the difference it is making.

The problem rests with the staff, not Jake, or Peppers. If the Panthers are a rush team, run the ball. The loss against Miami was only so because there were times when a clear run would have sufficed to control the clock and maintain the game. The Panthers are having an identity crisis at this point in time.

Peppers isn't the reason the Panthers are winning, give me a break. They have broken down quarterback that there paying 40 million bucks to throw interceptions and not touchdowns. No back ups and no defence is the reason they aren't winning. Fox needs to clean house and get a new staff. We have the best receiver, two really good running backs, we just need to draft for the future as far as quarterbacks, then we will win. Peppers wants to play for Dallas so let him go play there. At least he doen't have this big headed attitude like some these other superstars in the league

i will concure with everettghoover for the simple fact the panthers could have done alot better with their picks this season and to top the cake delhomme should not even be the starting quaterback. peppers is good but if he wanted to leave they should have let him and put someone just as good if not better in his place. peppers knew they didnt want him to leave so he chose to set the contract like that to insure himself. i guess it is what it is though right? they paid him.

J-Pepp haters back down! Jake Delhomme threw the Panthers season away with 3 interceptions and a fumble last year against the Cardinals. He doensn't say a word and is hit with a huge deal during offseason. J-Pepp who recorded his career high 14 1/2 sacks just wants a little love, unfortunately the Panthers doesn't have the love that he needs. J-Pepp is a winner, and he needs to be with a team that is aggressive and proves itself as a winner. The Panthers are real good, but Delhomme seems to flop every year. So get off J-pepp's back, hate on Delhomme if anyone!

It's bad enough that he only tries 50% of the time. Now the underachieving selfish one claims that he doesn't need to try in preseason either. That's funny, he didn't have this attitude about preseason last year when he had a career year. What a waste of talent!!!!!! I thought he would at least have a good year since he realized nobody thinks he's worth the $17m the Panthers are stuck with this year. It sounds like he's already cashed in and will be disappearing into the sunset by end of this year. The Panthers should have seen that coming when he refused to take a leadership role a few years ago despite getting leadership salary.

the down fall seems to be Jakes slight decline played only 3 games in 07 and hes throwing less TD's, he has about 2 more productive years left, its hard going past 10 years and being a hell of a QB at that point,,, they need to make a move to replace him next year and work on the replacement till Jakes contract is up

whent this first started, the francise tag talk, leaving CAR talk, the hold outs on everthing, it all boiled down to he had a bad ass 2008 season and wanted to see what he could get, so he held off signing with anyone for as long as possable and made a deal with his old team behind doors that was probably just as good as offers he had, the charlotteobservor, scoresreport, even his agent said he wanted out, but it was all for the love of money, they cut goings, hackett, bridges, etc. to clear cap room, the guy wasnt worth it, they should of let him go

Everyone on here is dead wrong. He didn't want the franchise tag, he didn't want more money. Peppers wanted to play in a 3-4 defensive scheme and play outside linebacker. When he says he's "maxed out" that means he's basically accomplished everything he could/ wanted to in Carolina. For god sakes, he grew up there, played college ball there, I would want to try something different too. All in all, he knows what he's capable of doing and knows how good he is, but the guy wants to be challenged.

i don't understand why the panthers just don't go a head a trade peppers. instead of holding on to someone who does not want to play there anymore. hey if they wait intil next year and try to frnchise him again they are going to be in the place they are this year. It's time to move on. let him go play for a championship cause the panthers have a long way to go before they reach a superbowl again.

Don't understand all the whining from the Carolina fans. He is the only player on defense they really have.If you are going to resign Jake with his shoulder problems that make Brett look like he is 20%.Sign him,or trade him.Don't put the franchise tag on the man because your too much the pu$$ies to pony up the dough.Have fun competing with Tampa Bay for last this season.

why would anyone think the panthers are going to win it all not gonna happen, they know it so why long term a whiner who had a above average CONTRACT season he is an above average player who already said at least twice that he wanted out , So get out go play on a worse team and get more money, Show everyone how much dough you deserve maybe the browns or lions you could be a like a football god with 4 wins a year instead of 10 or 11 and making the playoffs, even though the saints, cardinals, and the CUBS will win a superbowl before the panthers.

I saw this comming, you kind of got the impression he didnt want the long term deal, the big question remains, how does this affect the other team members, and why not take the hit and let him go, 16 mill plus could get you a good fill in, and that could be long term for 16 mill, the article toutched on it a little but there were some good names they sacraficed, Jeremy Bridges, Geoff Hangartner, and Frank Omiyale, from the line and with no money they have to lay on guys with little experiance in schwartz and bernardaue, and DT, DE, etc. maybe Im the only one that doesnt get it

and i agree die-nasty i also agree we should've got another QB but fox would've benched him and played jakes sorry ass... now JAKES A SHAVED SMOOTH PUSH-C LLOL
