For Panthers, Fox, a big gamble placed on Delhomme

  • Print

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—You can’t miss the merchandise trailer in the parking lot on the walk from Bank of America Stadium to Carolina’s practice fields. It features a picture of Jake Delhomme(notes) getting ready to unload a pass. Underneath him proclaims the Panthers as 2003 NFC champions.

It only seems like longer than six seasons ago.

Battered by a barrage of interceptions and ugly losses, Delhomme resembles anything but a Super Bowl quarterback these days. But coach John Fox, perhaps holding onto old, fond memories or because he has no better option, is gambling the beleaguered 34-year-old can regain his form despite a stunning 21 turnovers in seven games.

Delhomme’s future, Fox’s job and the Panthers’ fortunes all depend on it. In Carolina, it’s became Jake or Bust.

“This is the same quarterback that a year ago led us to a 12-4 record and a couple years ago an NFC championship and a Super Bowl,” running back DeAngelo Williams(notes) said. “Unfortunately, in this business you’re only as good as your last game and we didn’t play too well our last game. But my confidence has always been in Jake and will continue to stay in Jake.”

Fox has the same attitude. After toying with the idea of benching Delhomme after he threw three more interceptions in Sunday’s 20-9 loss to Buffalo, Fox decided to stick with Delhomme ahead of the inexperienced Matt Moore(notes) and A.J. Feeley(notes), the journeyman who’s struggling to learn the offense.

The Panthers (2-4) have already matched last year’s loss total, have watched Delhomme throw an NFL-high 13 interceptions, and face road games at Arizona (4-2) and New Orleans (6-0) the next two weeks.

Whether it’s shrewd, stubborn or simply a bad move, Fox and the Panthers are either going to implode or resurrect their season with Delhomme under center.

“I feel good about it,” Fox said.

Judging by talk show callers and message board posters, the feeling isn’t mutual. Delhomme claims he’s a “hermit” during the season and shuts out the criticism. What’s bothering Delhomme is that with a 56.5 passer rating and Carolina’s league-worst minus-14 turnover margin, he’s let down his teammates.

“I haven’t played well enough for them. That means more than anything else,” Delhomme said. “I’ve always felt that I’ve kind of been one that they can lean on in the tough situations and to fight through and I haven’t done that enough this year. That’s something that’s bothersome.”

Delhomme’s downward spiral started in January, where he turned in one of the worst performances by a quarterback in playoff history with five interceptions and lost a fumble in an upset loss to Arizona. He then got a contract extension — only to commit five more turnovers in Week 1 this year.

Most teammates have rallied behind him, either because they truly believe he can again be the QB that’s led Carolina to numerous comeback wins or they realize his confidence is fragile. Delhomme said he was “almost numb” after the Buffalo loss and Fox said Monday they needed to get confidence back in the passing game.

“The team collectively has to be better around him. Not all the interceptions are his fault,” tight end Jeff King(notes) said. “We all collectively have to pick up our game as does he.”

Receiver Steve Smith, held without a touchdown this season, was more guarded after Fox’s decision to keep the status quo.

“Jake is the guy,” Smith said. “It’s not my call.”

It’s unclear if Delhomme will have a shorter leash Sunday against the Cardinals. The team is trying to make things simpler for him after new quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer focused on Delhomme’s unorthodox mechanics in the preseason. Delhomme’s best moments this season have come when he’s had to improvise in the 2-minute offense.

Now Delhomme will get yet another chance to show he hasn’t completely lost it against the Cardinals, the team in which the horrible stretch began.

“It’ll be full circle if we go out and play well,” Delhomme said. “It’d be a nice thing.”

Loyality is one thing, but this is a business. If he's not getting the job done, it's not fair to his teammates and the fans to keep him him because of nostalgia.Fox is sacrificing the season for this one guy .He's been the starting quarterback for about 8 years here in Carolina. I think that alone means the team has been loyal to him, but there has to be a point when.....

I have been a Jake fan since the day he came in the game in Jacksonville back in 2003. He is not Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. He is a decent QB and has led this team to a lot of victories. I have also defended him for many years to my buddies who Jake hate and I would tell them that he is a leader and the guys on the field believe in him. That being said, it is time for Jake to sit for a while. He needs a reality check because his performance and production is horrible right now. Jake has always had a tendency to overthrow his receivers but this year something is different and I think I know what it is. The playoff game against Arizona where he threw 5 picks and a fumble is in his head and he can't get it out. Instead of going out and trusting himself to make plays he is going out and trying not to throw picks. Therefore his confidence is gone, and as soon as he throws one forget it he is done for the game. Watch his demeanor after a pick-his confidence is shot this year. I say pull him and let Moore/Feeley or Jeff King whoever they think can go out and give this team a chance to win besides Jake. If Fox says that Jake gives us the best chance to win then he is blind to the fact that right now Jake gives us the BEST CHANCE TO LOSE!! OPEN YOUR EYES FOX. Fox is like the woman who keeps forgiving the guy who is cheating on her over and over. You just feel sorry for her. I feel sorry for Fox because he knows that if he pulls Jake his career in Carolina is over. But it is time.

I get that the Panthers don't have a real option as a backup for jake, but how much worse could Matt Moore do? They were stupid to bring in Feeley who actually has a worse record than Jake and pass up the chance to get Garcia who is a proven winner. Delhomme is obviously a great teammate and the kind of person an organization wants representing it, but he has lost his ability to lead the team on the field. Given all of the bonehead moves that the Richardson boys made this offseason before getting canned (Peppers, Delhomme, and draft picks gone on the wind) how can we possibly hope to do better than .250 this year. This next offseason the fans need to see a new coach, new quaterback. and the back of Peppers as he gets run out of town. I am completely sick of seeing Peppers LAZY butt jogging around the field after a play, not involved at all, as he is payed a million bucks per game. I need to see some real changes on the field that show the team has a real desire to win, before I spend any of my money to see another game in the stadium. I have faith in Jerry Richardson to do the right thing now that he is back in charge. Just wait till next season.

As a Browns fan I can safely say that you have the worst Starting QB not named Russel or ANDERSON. Not that Quinn will do any better.

A 49er fan checking in here, since the Niners have the Panthers 1st round draft choice in the 2010 NFL Draft. Sure am hoping for a 2-14 record for the Panthers, whether Jake Delhomme is still the QB or someone else takes over.

I don't claim to know anything about the Panthers' backup QBs but think about how this would make you feel if you were one of them. Essentially, the coach just said that the worst QB in the league not named Russell is better than you are. Wonderful ...

I would rather have Jake Delhomme starting football games as the QB for my favorite club over quite a few other starters in the league right now.

So what, he's made mistakes. His coaches still expect him to make plays and get the ball downfield. How about taking a little pressure off the guy until he can get his confidence back?

The Panthers nearly always have up and down years. Seems like a pattern. Delhomme has always been a decent QB. Do you think he all of a sudden forgot how to play? Give the guy a break, it could be a lot worse.

I think, perhaps, you should blame your coaching staff before you blame Mr. Delhomme.

It looks like MJD was factoring in fumbles too. Add 3 fumbles (only 2 lost) to the 13 INTs and you get 15TOs in 6 games. That would average 40 TO's for the season. I guess if you count the one that wasn't lost, then you'd get his 42.

Should have been more clear, but the point is that Delhomme has been historically bad this season in taking care of the ball!

    Ugly, just plain ugly!

Let the full circle be complete when the Cards rip him to shreds. They wont be able to open up a running game and we showed we can pass rush, just ask the G-Men. Even worse for Delhomme is the game is at our house and trust me we will not make it easy for his line to hear much. 5-2 baby not to shabby thus far!!!

agreed. doesnt make sense to mess with what "works" for a lack of better words. I have to say though that this team is 2-4, cant beat a team they were supposed to dominate on the ground. the two teams they beat have a combined record of 2-12. basically they are at the bottom and the only way to go is up. They keep saying that they dont have any options at qb, well personally i think matt moore gives the panthers as good of a chance as delhomme. now for those of you who think its wrong well look at the opportunities that matt has had. a 31-7 blowout from indianapolis when he got thrown in that game. then in the loss to the eagles this year where we got beat 38-10. in the games where he was able to start early he had decent game nothing stellar but solid. for one he didnt have all the turnovers that jake does. The other issue on matt is that he has played in preseason and not with the starting team. Look the panthers cant get really much worse than they are what is wrong with some change? light a fire under jake he feels so safe for his job not matter how bad he does. enough is enough. bench the moron and give someone willng to make plays a chance. thats the thing yeah jake can manage a game but lately he has forgotten that making plays is needed. and making pays with the other team is not the objective here. earlier i read that jake made the comment that the "offense hasnt jelled", well isnt it virtually the SAME offense as last year? what havent they got? oh yeah a playmaker at QB. so why not make some changes to the team, hell the worst part of the season is now here and so long as the panthers keep getting beat i will put the defense that plays them in on fantasy. Its sad im more proud of the 1-15 team than i am this years team.
