Fox: No decision yet whether to bench Delhomme

  • Print

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—For the first time in seven years, Jake Delhomme(notes) is in jeopardy of losing his starting job.

After another abysmal performance Sunday left Carolina 2-4 and Delhomme with an NFL-high 13 interceptions, Panthers coach John Fox acknowledged he’s contemplating benching Delhomme in favor of either Matt Moore(notes) or A.J. Feeley(notes).

“I still believe Jake is our best quarterback. I have no reason to believe otherwise, truth be told,” Fox said Monday. “But collectively we’ll do whatever it takes for us to improve. What that is I can’t honestly tell you at this second.”

A day earlier, Delhomme threw three interceptions, two which were badly overthrown and directly led to 14 Buffalo points in the Bills’ 20-9 win. The 34-year-old Delhomme, who received a lucrative contract extension in the offseason, can’t seem to snap out of the worst stretch of his career.

It began when Delhomme threw five interceptions and lost a fumble against Arizona in the playoffs. Counting two lost fumbles this season, Delhomme has committed 15 turnovers and thrown only four touchdowns. His passer rating of 56.5 ranks 32nd in the league and Carolina’s minus-14 turnover margin is by far the worst in the NFL.

Sunday’s loss ended Carolina’s two-game winning streak and left Delhomme seemingly stunned. He said he was “numb” and added it was a “crushing” loss after Carolina outgained Buffalo 425-167.

“Last night I was numb and right now, you watch the film—I’ve watched it three times already today—I think it’s more frustration,” Delhomme said Monday.

Delhomme stood in front of his locker with Arizona game tape under his arm vowing to prepare to start as always. He said he met earlier in the day with the Fox, but declined to reveal details.

“I think my confidence is high, but it’s easy to say it,” Delhomme said. “You’ve got to get it done. … I’m not trying to play the victim. I’m the one pulling the trigger.”

While Fox said he sees no difference in Delhomme’s arm strength or delivery, he hinted Delhomme’s psyche will play into his decision who starts in Sunday’s playoff rematch with the Cardinals.

“We’ll do whatever it takes for us to start developing some confidence in that phase of the game,” Fox said.

Trouble is, the Panthers have few good options behind Delhomme, who has been Carolina’s starter since Week 2 in 2003, when the relative unknown led the Panthers to a surprising trip to the Super Bowl.

Moore started three games as an undrafted rookie in 2007 when Delhomme was recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery. Moore’s only appearance since was when he completed 6 of 11 passes for 63 yards and an interception after Delhomme was benched late in the season opener against Philadelphia.

“I feel ready if needed,” Moore said. “But I think we’re 100 percent behind Jake.”

The Panthers signed the journeyman Feeley on Sept. 15 after Josh McCown(notes) was placed on injured reserve with knee and ankle injuries. Feeley has since been scrambling to learn the offense.

“Do I think I can go out there and manage the game and play? Yeah,” Feeley said. “Do I have a grasp of the offense like the other guys? Obviously that’s not the case.”

Delhomme still has the support of several teammates. Many came to his defense, including left tackle Jordan Gross(notes), who is opposed to a QB change.

“I’ve got faith in our backups, but that seems like a break-glass, pull-handle type of thing to do that,” Gross said.

Fox has remained firmly behind Delhomme in the past. As recently as a month ago he was asked if Delhomme was still the starter and replied, “Yes, with a capital Y.”

Now Fox’s tune has changed, and he brushed off questions Monday about keeping Delhomme twisting before deciding on his future.

“I think we need to do what’s going to help us win,” Fox said. “If that’s Jake, I think he’ll understand that. If it’s not Jake, I think he’ll understand that, too. Right now we’re not executing as well in the passing game. I can’t say it’s all the quarterback. But we have to get that better.”

Since we dont have a 1st round pick draft Armanti Edwards in the 3rd/4th round. Hes probably too small but hes got an incredible arm Hes a small version of Vick with a better arm. even if he doesnt work out we will have a great return man. (could always run the wildcat 50 times a game lol)

Yesterday, actually. He hit that TE for a 56 yard pass in stride.
Not that I disagree with anything else you said, Jake still sucks.

There was no pass longer than 48 yards in the game.
That short pass went to Steve Smith , which he broke for that yardage
after the catch. NONE OF THE TE's HAD MORE THAN 25 yds per catch!

    Hey Jake.
You are right. Without Jake Carolina would not have been to the playoffs 3 times and the superbowl once. If they had a decent QB maybe they would have been to the playoffs 5 or 6 times and probably won at least 1 superbowl. There is too much talent on this team to suck this bad.
After this year you can tell Jake and Fox goodbye forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey man im all for keeping the guy in but when you have a stretch of stinking it up for how many games now? Obviously we all can see that playoff game hurt him badly and he cant shake @#$%. I say bench him let someone else play and let him try and get some composer back when it comes to playing and then in the off season get a guy whos our furture not our 2-3 year fix.

I mean the guy was a back-up behind Aaron Brooks that has to say something.

First of all you need a offense cordinator (didn't this one come from cleveland) now that's pathetic and it shows. you need young legs at quarterback that can move and not panic. Lets get this year over with and think what we realy need for next year. Offense cordinator and a new QB.

I don't know where you people get your information from, but Jake Delhomme is NOT married to Jerry Richardson's daughter. Please get your facts straight before starting a rumor like this.

Hey!! WTF are you people saying..are you f%%*(* kidding me?? You Know I have always been a Panthers fan. And i have always and i mean always been Delhomme's number one fan. I cant believe people are saying this about Jake. Every quarterback has a bad season, every team has a bad season. And this isnt panthers season. So why dont you guys just back the F*&^ off. If it wasnt for Jake Carolina woulnt even have a team like they do now! They wouldnt have gone to three playoff appearances or a Super Bowl appearance if it wasnt for Jake. And now everybody wants Moore in as quarterback?? Jake is the Panthers #1 QB and if you dont like that then you can just walk away.

Jake buddy, I believe in you and always have. Just do your best and forget about all the bad games. Those are the past. Good Luck Jake!

People forget that all athletic performance is on a bell curve : stating low, rising to a peak and then falling into delince. Delhomme was a superior backup QB who maximized his opportunity when given the Panther's starting job. Arguably he reached his talent/performance apex around 2005. Even then his numbers weren't great, but he was a solid game manager and had a great attitude. At this point, Delhomme's declining ability and awareness is simply hurting the team. Fox is a stay the course kind of guy, or we would've seen a change far earlier in the season, imho. I find it rather amazing that with all the red flags on Delhommes performace over the past 4 seasons that the Panthers never sought to give themselves an option. From what Fox says he seems to think the backups are truly last option talents. Why would any franchise with aspirations of superbowls and a shakey QB not have a Plan B at a key position? I guess thats the difference between a NE and a Carolina.

John Fox must want to be fired, that is the only reason to stick with a guy who has 15 turnovers. I cleaned up with the booky this week. Carolina was giving 7!!!!!

J Delhomme is a guranteed 3 turnovers a game use this information to your advantage and make some money before he is benched.
